Less variation in trophies, generalize them(Discussion)
Trophies, the stuff NPCs drop, often share the same design but vary in name and sometimes color. A single species/group like the Tengus, for example, have several identical looking "Tengu Crests":
All of them look alike and contain the same stuff - feathers. Numbers may vary, but that's about it.
Yet they have different values, different names, and take a unique inventory slot.
Of course, each of them comes from a different region, and represents a different subspecies/difficulty level.
However, why do they have to drop entire crests/scalps at all, at low levels? Why not let low-level Tengus drop only one or more "Tengu Scalp Fragment" ?
The entire species is called "Tengu", no matter where they are from.
High-level creatures could simply drop more of them, or, in case of the highest NPCs, entire scalps.
- Why this is a good idea
- Less inventory space required - less items in database
- Not as many identical looking but different items
- makes stockpiling possible
- less complexity in NPC drops
- Why it may not work out
- it will encourage low-level farming
- it will seem as if there are no variation in drops regardless of creature level
- makes stockpiling possible
- less complexity in NPC drops
(The last two notes are added to both pro/con, because they can be seen either way, but are important enough to be listed. Personally, I think both are positive.)
I realize that a workaround would be to introduce special bags/chests that can take only trophies, but IMO it would be better to reduce the complexity, as it serves no real purpose.
