Decrease Title Grind (Discussion)
Guild Wars currently has too many different titles for too many different things. Heck we even have a title for how many titles you have. That's like an award show where other award shows win awards. Titles are fun, but should *just* be fun. They shouldn't be a big distraction from the actual activity of playing with others, as many titles are now (I'm looking at you Sweet Tooth). At the very least, titles should reward activity rather than consumption and greed. Too many titles reward mass expenditures of money and grind, while too few reward actual gameplay and cooperating with others to accomplish goals.
First of all, the following title tracks should not exist in GW2.
- Survivor--->Legendary Survivor
- Kind of a Big Deal--->God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals
(The names can stay but the function should not. For instance, Survivor could track how many times you've completed an elite area without a single death. KoaBD could track something like how many quests your character has completed, since this will make you more widely known amongst NPC's. Personally I think you should definitely have a title that keeps track of quests completed because it will encourage people to actually go do them together.)
Collection titles such as Party Animal, Sweeth Tooth, and Drunkard aren't necessarily a big evil, but when you consider their money cost, along with the cost of the Skill Hunter and similar titles, title seeking becomes more a measure of wealth and grind time than something genuinely worth celebrating like victories or teamwork or creative playstyle. I would like the title system to more reflect activities, especially those that involve other players. They can also have more bearing on the game. You basically get titles now just to have them, but if having a title gave you more options it would be more fun and worth more to have them.
Here are a few ideas:
- Team Player: Gain points in this title by completing dungeons/quests/missions with other people. For each other player in the party when the objective is complete, you gain a point toward this title. This title has only one rank. After achieving it, it could unlock new quests or areas that require other people to participate.
- Loner: Gain points by completing dungeons/quests/missions while no other players or NPC's are in the party. This title has only one rank. After achieving it, it can unlock new solo quests. (I know it doesn't encourage play with others, but it does encourage people to complete objectives. Besides. Some people enjoy going solo now and then.)
- Destroyer: Gain points in this title every time you kill a boss of a level equal to or higher than your own. This title has multiple ranks with cool names like Conquerer and Warlord or something like that.
- Runner: Gain points in this title every time you capture a flag tower in PvP. (might need to tweak how it works)
- Trapper: Gain points in this title every time you kill a foe of equal or higher level with a trap.
Some titles that could stay but become more interactive are:
- Treasure Hunter: Works the same way, but I think there should be a handful of quests/dungeons that can reward points in it as well. Some dungeons will become available to people who have one or multiple ranks in this title.
- Cartographer: Nothing to change here. Maybe add some extra quests for people who have a rank or a few in it.
- Vanquisher: Functions the same. After vanquishing a certain area or achieving a rank in the title, new quests (usually really hard ones) will be made available.
- Anyway. I know I've just given a list of examples and this probably looks like a "add more titles" page. But it's not. The title examples are just there to illustrate *how* you could make the title system function better. The point is to change the attitude behind title acquisition. Design them to offer rewards based more on gameplay than greed and grind. Elite weapon and armor skins are already a status symbol in the game. Titles shouldn't be, too.
- Why this is a good idea
- Titles will provide incentive to play more actively with others and/or focus on doing stuff rather than getting stuff.
- Titles will 'come alive' in that they will open up new options after achieving them. Once you get a title, you'll have more stuff to do besides try and max other titles.
- I love this idea. Let's put an end to the plague called grinding! But I think you should remove the Cartographer title too, or make more quests to cover places.
- Why it may not work out
- Some titles will become less meaningful to people.
- The whole purpose of titles is to show off and also to please grinders. Its like with elite armor it serves no purpose other than to say I have more money than you.
