ArenaNet talk:Guild Wars 2 suggestions/Weather
Well, those "some people" might care more if weather were more integrated into game mechanics, like having an effect on movement (slower movement in snow) or certain skills (Lightning Bolt functions like Chain Lightning when in the rain). Though, the effects on game balance will be severe (at least with my latter suggestion), as you have another factor to consider. → BROWNSPANK 08:25, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Some of these effects already exist, like muddy terrain and icy ground, environmental effects in the realm of torment, but if they made them more naturally occuring like suggested (instead of painted skies), it will be a step up from GW1. (Terra Xin 10:39, 19 June 2008 (UTC))
I like the idea. I also would like it if it also affected the monsters that appeared. Although I may be asking a bit much. :P--Catforsale344 17:55, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- I like your idea, Catforsale344. It's like how in the Sacnoth Inferno section of [[Sacnoth Valley, the wildfire causes elementals like the Burning Spirit and Flowstone Elemental to appear. az :D 15:28, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

- If the weather affects spells and attacks and etc there will be a little concern on balance/slight-grind-feel but it couldn't hurt to atleast give it a try during beta, and personally I think it would work out fine anyways. On the Aesthetic side, I would love to see all kinds of spontanious weather, along with bright cracking lightning strikes if it is raining, or mayby even raining ash near a volcano. --Elven Chaos 00:18, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- Seasonal weather and its affects could really spice up the game, I think. What if, durring winter, the Shiverpeaks were frequently engulfed in blizzards which would slow down your movement through these areas. Or, perhaps, electical storms could start forest fires and temporarily short out Asura Gates. Also, durring hurricain season, hurricains could occasionally strike the coastline in tropical areas, hindering trravel and possibly damaging the environment or causing floods.--Shai Halud 20:47, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
- One interesting aspect to the weather could be how it effects dungeons. In real life certain areas of caves are only accessible during droughts when the water tables fall and passages are no longer submerged. You could have certain areas within dungeons only accessible when it hasnt rained. You could also have raging rivers within dungeons when there has been a lot of rain.Neuro 04:04, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Dungeons will be GW2's equivalent of our instanced zones, so if you add in a weather effect like that it would mean all dungeons would have to have a saved state like they do with quests and Slaver's Exile.

Dynamic Weather
I was thinking of doing a dynamic weather system as well, however, the purpose would be aimed at the game mechanics and how it affects the skills of players in PvE and PvP. This way, there wouldn't be a constant need to change metas or overused builds. For example:
- -Rain causes random slipping with running skills (not very frequently)
- -Snow causes decreased speed(like muddy terrain) and deals a slightly less damage (maybe 5%)
- -Extreme heat causes chance of exhaustion (maybe 5%)
- -High winds increase chance of projectiles to miss (like the spirit, "winds")
- -Fog after rains causes chance of melee miss and decreased visibility.
I think this would be a nice way to encourage a change of builds so that it may not favor a melee heavy or caster heavy build constantly. The weather should have something like a 2 day forecast so that it is not completely random, but at the same time, can occur mid battle. Imagine a battle going downhill for a team all match against a ranger spike, and after 15 minutes, strong winds pick up and give the losing team a slight advantage to get back into the battle. Surely, it would be interesting and challenging for teams to compensate against the changing weather. --Sonofjenova7 23:00, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
it would be sweet but we should save it for GW3 so we can rub it in wow's face!--Gen winter 02:49, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
