Target, as a noun, refers to the creature, interactive object, bundle or item another creature has selected. The target will be the primary recipient of any attack or skill they use. In the interface, this is displayed as a name bar, default position center top, which also displays additional info if the target is a creature.
As a verb, targeting refers to the act of selecting such a target.
Double-clicking the target or pressing the "Do it"-key (default: space bar) will cause the player to move towards the target; for hostile targets the player will start auto attacking when in range, allied NPCs will be talked to, interactive objects will be interacted with and items will be picked up.
Targeted skills[edit]
Skills can only target creatures. Most targeted skills place additional restrictions on the kinds of targets they apply to. For example, a healing skill cannot target a foe while an attack cannot target allies. Possible target restrictions include:
- Ally
- Other ally. Cannot self-target.
- Animal companion
- Party member
- Other party member
- Foe
- Charmable animal (Only used by Charm Animal.)
- Summoned creature
- Fleshy creature (Only Malign Intervention. Other skills may not be effective against non-fleshy creatures, but they can still be targeted.)
- Corpse
- Exploitable Corpse (mostly Necromancer skills)
- Dead party member (all Resurrection skills)
Untargeted skills[edit]
Some work independently of the selected target. For example, Healing Signet will always heal the user, no matter which creature was targeted. Similarly, Heal Party will always heal party members within range.
Untargeted skills will work even when a specific game mechanic prevents targeting, e.g. Aegis can enchant someone inside a Well of the Profane and Inferno can be use against someone using spell targeting prevention.
Default targets[edit]
If no suitable target has been selected, most targeted skills will fail to activate and display a warning message. The exceptions are:
- If you have enabled certain gameplay options (
[F11]
):- "Auto-target foes when there's no chosen target" — this will allow most spells, attacks, and other skills to automatically target a nearby foe. Pressing the spacebar will cause your character to auto-attack. The target selected will be within in your field of view and relatively nearby; if there are multiple targets, the one closest to the center of your screen is chosen.
- ''Auto-target NPCs, items, and interactive objects when there's no chosen target" — Similarly, if there is no nearby foe, using the spacebar will cause you to interact with a nearby NPC, item, or other selectable object.
- Skills that target an ally, excluding skills that target other ally (cannot self-target), will automatically target the user.
- Skills that target allied minions, spirits or exploitable corpses will automatically be used on the closest fitting creature.
How to target[edit]
Foes, allies, animals, corpses, and others may be targeted in the following ways:
- A single, left-button mouse click on the target. If the option "Double-click to Attack/Interact" is not selected, this will also cause the player to move towards and attack/interact with the target.
- Selecting a creature from the Party window or Minion List
- One of the configurable targeting hotkeys. The most commonly used are:
- "Targeting: Self" (default: F)
- "Targeting: Foe - Nearest" (default: C)
- "Targeting: Ally - Nearest" (default: V) - this will target the nearest other ally, not self.
- "Targeting: Priority Target" (default: T) - select a target called by someone else (see called targets, below)
- "Targeting: Foe - Next" (default: ] or TAB)
- "Targeting: Foe - Previous" (default: [ or SHIFT+TAB)
Hint: Since all skills that can target you will have you as default target, adding a hotkey for "Targeting: Clear Target" can be useful to both targeting yourself and losing targets.
Called targets[edit]
A target called out by a party member is indicated by expanding red-dot rings around the target's minimap marker, a ringing sound, and text displayed in the Team Chat. Also the icon at right, displaying crosshairs and flashing the letter T, will appear in the Party Members window next to the name of the party member who called the target. Called Targets may be announced to a party in a number of ways.
How to call a target[edit]
Use one of the following methods to both Call and Attack a target. Doing so will cause your target to be marked in the manner mentioned above, and post text in the team Chat stating, I am attacking (target x)! or I am using (skill x) on (target y)!.
- Hold CTRL and double-click your intended target.
- Select a target using a hotkey (C, T, ], et-cetera) mentioned above, then:
- Hold CTRL and press the spacebar.
- Hold CTRL and click a skill in your skillbar.
Use one of the following methods to only Call a target, without attacking. Doing so will cause your target to be marked in the manner mentioned above, and post text in the team Chat stating, I am targeting (target x)!.
- Hold SHIFT+CTRL and double click your intended target.
- Select a target using a hotkey (C, T, ], et-cetera) mentioned above, then:
- Hold SHIFT+CTRL and press the spacebar.
- Hold SHIFT+CTRL and click a skill in your skillbar.
How to attack an already called target[edit]
Once a target is called, pressing the T key immediately selects the same target. Then press the spacebar or click a skill in your skillbar to attack or use a skill on the called target.
Alternately, after pressing the T key, hold the CTRL button while pressing the spacebar or clicking a skill in your skill bar to announce that you are attacking the same called target. Doing so will post I am attacking (target x)! or I am using (skill x) on (target y)! in Team Chat.
Customization[edit]
All targeting hotkeys can be freely configured via the Controls tab in the options menu.
