I believe that the environment and all around immersion of the game can be improved by use of a sense system. In my mind, this would take the place of a series of five small bars on the screen, one for each of the five senses. These bars would give constant feedback of the game world around you, and would 'spike' when they notice something of value or pertinent to your quest and/or your survival. Graphical and sound effects would accompany the notices.
Different races would have different dominant and subordinate senses, the Charr for example would have a great sense of smell and hearing, average sight, and lower than average taste and touch. While the sylvari would have incredible sight and touch, but lack in hearing and taste, and even more so in touch.
There are a myriad of potential uses for this in game.
1. It would increase immersion to experience the world beyond sight and sound, even if only in description and language.
2. This would be a unique way of handling stealth detection, finding traps, sensing ambushes, etc.
3. Knowledge and intuition bonuses and tactics.
Example 1: Imagine you are fighting an enemy Charr, your smell sensor bar (that sounds terrible) suddenly spikes with a small notice next to it plainly stating 'black powder'. Your character can smell that this enemy is carrying black powder. If you can hit him with a fire attack, it will likely explode, dealing a great deal of damage to him.
Example 2: Similarly, your party comes upon a Golem gone rogue, you as a warrior pull out your +2 Axe of Awesomeness and begin to lay into the construct gone wild. After a few strokes your touch sensor bar lights up and reads "Vulnerable to Blunt". You can feel through the jarring vibrations of your Axe that this blade is not doing a whole lot against the golem's stone hide. And the heavier, more concussive blows of a blunt weapon would serve better.
4. Can affect/diverge quest chains. Normally you would hunt down the baddies this NPC is asking you to without question, except you just noticed a subtle change in his voice and demeanor, and he clearly isn't telling you the whole story. Do as he says anyway? Drag the truth out of him? Or just kill him for lying to you?
