Cartographer in Guild Wars 2[edit]
Let's be honest. The cartographer title in Guild Wars 1 was probably one of the most annoying titles in the game. Noone liked to scrape the map edges for .01-.05%.
If titles should exist in Guild Wars 2, I propose Cartographer be handled in a new way.
Being a cartographer should be about "marking" all the landmarks on your map. Guild Wars 1 has over 200 landmarks, and most of them are found in the explorable world, but they aren't really noticed or even cared about by the players. Some of them have little interactable texts; others don't. This would be a great way to make the lore of the game more widespread to the casual player, while offering a more enjoyable way to do Cartographer besides map scraping.
Instead of scraping, you may have go to the edge of the world to actually chart a ruin of some siginificance.
You could even add events or discoveries from Cartographer. Using a Guild Wars 1 example, you go all the way to the Falls in Maguuma Jungle and "mark" The Waterfall in the falls, only to find Zinn's Lair.
Or in that ruin on the edge of the world, you try to scribe a marking of the ruin onto your map, but you disturb the guardians of the ruin.
In conclusion, my suggestion summarizes the following points:
- A new Cartographer system to make use of the various overlooked landmarks in the Guild Wars world.
- Possibly using the Cartographer system to "discover" new areas (See Zinn's lair example)
- Possibly using the Cartographer system to start "events" in Guild Wars 2.
This system would make Cartographer much more fun and meaningful in Guild Wars 2.
