One idea that I've recently taken interest in is the possibility of having player moderators, these being players who have the ability to mute bots or flamers. To be honest, the ability to mute is the only ability I'm really interested in, but that doesn't mean such has to be limited to this. I'll leave it up to the real moderators to decide what could be trusted to player moderators.
The vast majority of bots that you'll see have long and confusing names, most times these characters will be level one, and so it's safe to assume that the advertisers are using trial accounts. That fact acknowledged, reporting these bots is pretty well pointless due to the fact that by the next day the same person will have a new bot using a new trial account. I myself in the past have been discouraged, for a long time I didn't bother reporting them because I know that by the time the account has been banned, the botter will have the next trial account bot up and ready. One thing I know to be fact though is that the point of a bot is so that you do not have to sit at your computer. Muting the bot would mean that players do not have to listen to the bot for the several hours it takes for Anet to ban the account nor worry about ignoring it.
Choosing players to be moderators would have to be a picky topic since most players would probably abuse the ability to mute other players. The power to ban accounts is definitely not something I would put in the list of player moderator abilities because of this fact. From what I understand, Anet has an incident report log and so I would suggest using this to help in choosing who qualifies to be a player moderator.
Pros...
1) Less reports for Anet to worry about
- The longer the bot advertises, the more people there will be who report it.
2) Players would not have to listen to bots for hours, or keep adding to their list of ignores
- The only other option is to simply ignore it in the chat box, but if talking to friends in chat box, this can get rather annoying.
3) Less hacked accounts, since the ads would not run for hours before being silenced there would be less players visiting these sites
- Lets face it, there are a lot of people out there who are dumb enough to visit these sites and even give their account information.
Cons...
1) Giving players power over other players
- Choosing moderators would require good judgment on the part of the person who decides who earns the right.
