I know I saw a suggestion by user DoorMoon for underwater combat being included in the WvWvW map and that players would have to protect waterways throughout the map. I agree with this but why stop there? I, and I'm sure other players who grow to love the freedom of underwater movement, would love to see a WvWvW map where a large part of it is devoted to a giant lake! At the bottom of this lake? A spiky fortress shaped like a spiraling sea shell!
I've seen some of the stuff NCsoft and ArenaNet have cooked up for the besieging of a land based castle and it's going to be lots of fun but think of how much more could be done under water? Think of armies lining up at the waters edge for the right signal then all diving into the depths to see the fortress and its defenses rise up in the water before them. Coral ballista bolts cutting through the water, leaving trails of bubbles behind them, felling the swimmers left and right. Groups of defenders could be hiding the rocky and uneven lake bed that ambush those attackers who attempt to swim lower to avoid the dangers of the fortress defenses.
Of course caravans would still be an important part of the assault. The attacking forces could use materials brought by caravans to construct catapults to launch themselves upwards so when they plunge into the lake they do so with such velocity as to speed towards the lake bed, avoiding dangerous time in the open waters.
They could build simple wooden walls that a PC would grab either end of and swim into position wherever needed to protect from long range attacks as well as create mobile defenses that other players will swim behind during their approach.
Finally the largest construction they can make (if the defenders fail to disrupt for too long) could be an Asura submarine that the defenders must swim out to combat as it will make one pass around the fortress, dealing heavy damage to static defenses but needing to be protected from enemy players, before slowly turning toward the fortress, charging its engines, and ramming through a wall. All PCs that were manning the sub could then rush out and secure the breach as more of the attacking side charge in.
Without such a weapon the attacking forces could still make their way in by breaking down heavily contested gates at the base and around the sides of the fortress.
Defenders would also have their own mechanics to play with. Mesmers and Thieves could dash out from coral formations on the lake bed to play havoc with attacking forces. Powerful Ballista mounted on the tips of the fortresses many spires could rain death and destruction onto any forces swimming through open water towards the fortress. There could be giant bubbles trapped on the lake bed could be released upwards to send any attackers it encounters rocketing to the surface. There could be slowly swimming sea creatures prowling the depths or circling the fortress walls on which defending players could gather, build defenses, or even set up more defensive weaponry leaving attacking forces the option to take out the defenders on the creature or to kill the creature to immobilize and sink whatever was built there.
Defenders would also start in control of a mighty ship that patrols the waters, dropping nets and power barrels onto attacking forces while deck mounted weapons and PCs could attack forces gathered on the shore forcing them to rally at a nearby forests edge to avoid casualties. This ship could of course be captured by attacking forces in an epic sea battle.
Adding the third dimension to movement would also help with larger scale battles. There would be more room for armies of players to maneuver as well as adding many more tactics to be used as players try to find ways to exploit their new found freedom of motion.
I think this sort of battle would also go along with the Guild Wars theme of being new and unique. There are many games that have laying siege to a castle as a feature. I'm not trying to say that Guild Wars 2 shouldn't have land based castles (in fact I'm looking forward to leaping through a shattered wall as a flamethrower wielding Char) but why can't Guild Wars 2 have EVEN MORE AWESOME? The answer? It will. I'm just hoping something like this is included.
