One name to itemize them all[edit]
Do not reuse a name for non-identical items.
In Guild Wars #1, some item names are re-used for non-identical items (examples below). This creates unnecessary confusion for the player. While performance requirements might require skins to be re-used, it should always be possible to introduce a new name when the items differ in functionality.
Note: Naturally, weapons with the same name and skin will vary in common statistics (e.g. damage, amount of energy); the suggestion is to use a new name when the functionality or look of the item differs (e.g. upgrade options, skin, defensive/offensive utility, distinct sources).
Examples[edit]
This list is suggestive, not exhaustive; it is meant to give one a flavor for the confusion that reigns when unnecessarily reusing a name.
General Case | Specific Example | Used for... | Notes | Possible alternatives |
---|---|---|---|---|
Identically named trophies | Skale Fin | Skale Fin (Nightfall), Skale Fin (Pre-Searing) | Incompatible sources, different result from collections | Skale Fin and Istani Skale Fin |
Crafted vs. collector items | Armor | e.g. Canthan Armor (crafted) and Canthan Armor (collected) | Crafted armor always allows Insignias and Runes; only Runes are permitted for some collector armors. | Canthan Collectors Armor and Canthan Crafted Armor |
Identically named items | Weapons | e.g. Water Staff != Water Staff != Water Staff | Different skins, different upgrade options, different functions (defense vs. offense). | Canthan Water Staff, Ordinary Water Staff, Tyrian Water Staff |
Identically named items across campaigns | More Weapons | e.g. Flame Artifact != Flame Artifact | Different skins, some allow inscriptions and focus cores, while others do not. | Flame Artifact, Flaming Eye |
