Would I be violating any copyrights if;
Sorry for posting only a day after the last question but; Me and some friend of mine are big fans of guild wars and wished that utopia would have been released, so we wanted to make a total conversion for the popular roleplaying game elder scroll IV: oblivion, We wanted to know if we would be violating any copyright infringements (we would be using concept art) the mod's story would be based off of fan speculation and would include original models+ textures, we would give Anet full credit for the art and guildwars and anything else needed and would give bethesda softworks full credit for the actual oblivion game, we would do our best to stress the fact that this was a fan-made unnoficial thing and the we were not associated with either company. - Could you please send a message to community@arena.net, explain your project, and I will send those along to our lawyer to see what they think. Thanks! --Regina Buenaobra 02:09, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
- I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure previous stances on this have been "absolutely not." Back when she had her old position, Gaile said something about not using ANet content in other games... you can still ask, of course, but it seems pretty unlikely that a lawyer is going to agree to let anyone use anything even under the absolute strictest of terms without some sort of significant monetary compensation. –Jette 05:08, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Seriously?http://www.guildwars2guru.com/ Not that I'm surprised but would think we would hear this from you.--SirBoss 17:38, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- So basically, Martin has loose lips, while Regina would rather keep us in the dark? How does this qualify as news? IMO: This would be a good thing and I hope their "accountant /w a fancy title" is right about it. --ilr 19:46, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- What do I have to do with something that Eurogamer is reporting based on a Korean Quarterly Earnings Press Conference? Because it is called Eurogamer and I come from the country of Europe? o.O--Martin Kerstein (talk) 02:06, 11 November 2009
- Sure, let's go with that... you wanna be "cool", don't ya? --ilr 06:05, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Who really cares at this point? We had a ballpark 2010-2011 from an NCSoft report a while back. 2011 is something I still consider in an optimistic sense. And, not to be rude, but when Regina speaks you have to take it with a grain of salt anyway. ~~000.00.00.00~~ 20:04, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Ohey, look what I found:
- Specifics aren't exactly Anet's specialty. Karate Jesus 20:17, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- While we had a window from 2010-2011. It would seem this is pertinent news because we can just scratch off the 2010. I guess im just grasping at staws. It must really be too much to ask that a CM for Anet actually give us this info. Instead we get the orig. estimate from NCsoft and now we also can thank them for narrowing the time frame to 2011.--SirBoss 20:49, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- I was trying to point out that all the other games have a specific (or at least close to specific) time frame of release. You'll notice that GW2 had a 2 year gap. Specifics have never been Anet's strong-suit. Look at the general CR work. It really doesn't surprise me that we had this narrowed down by a NCSoft employee rather than an Anet employee, and it also wouldn't surprise me if that estimate is off by at least a year. ^Good point.--SirBoss 21:13, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- estimate or not, it's still a "kind" of specific detail that took us from a scope of 36 months to less than 12... --ilr 06:05, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Guild Wars 2 will be released when it is done. When we go into beta, when there is a specific release date, we will let you know. We give specifics when it is the time for that.
- And Martin didn't speak to Eurogamer... I'm not sure why you thought this. Martin and I are given the same information, and given permission at the same time to talk about that information, so naturally we would synch up on the timing talking about things in public, when the time comes. --Regina Buenaobra 02:11, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Alot of sites are now making their own topics about the release in 2011 and beta in 2010, seems that it is spreading around the internet. So every article about it is fake. Death Sligher 15:40, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
(Reset indent) The part of the community that actually follows news, as opposed to just harassing Regina and Linsey's talk pages, already knew this by looking directly at the NCSoft report for 3Q before the other article. No need for middle man sites like Eurogamer, or to link Martin to it. Erasculio 10:10, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- stop saying Martin, the reason I mentioned that had nothing to do with this. >.> --ilr 19:24, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Either way I suppose the one thing we can take from all of this is that it's probably gonna be a 2011 release date. -- Salome 02:03, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- An ANet artist (who recently updated her job info) has GW2's expected release as '10.-- Shew 19:25, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
- WTH? You can get a Hyphenated position at this company with only 2 years of Maya training?? Hell I got TWELVE years of experience with FauxToeShoop and could easily get 2 more years of 3dsMax/Maya standing on my head... All these clipping & tinting issues we have to deal with when compiling armor galleries are really starting to make sense now :p --ilr 21:49, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Dervishes in Guild Wars 2...?
So I saw this a long time ago, but didn't decide to post anything until now. Do I spy a Dervish in the ingame video portion of the GW2 trailer? : http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e262/chrish16-of-el/dervish.png See the red arrows :P Power WM 21:54, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

@Regina I know =/. I wanted to see if anyone else agrees that it looks like a Dervish. Thanks anyway :) Power WM 15:12, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes I can almost 100% say that its from a dervish or it is from a evolved dervish somesort of thingy. Or maybe she is wearing it for a god:P, or its for protection agains the sun(since it is a ice silvary). Death Sligher 15:37, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

- You can't be sure of it being a Dervish given the fact we don't know what professions will be in the game. --smøni 17:12, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- You do know that the game is going to be called Guild Wars 2, right? Not Totally Unrelated Game 2? It's still going to have warriors and monks and the like. Though personally, I'm hoping for a complete removal of dervishes over those 200 years, as they're just gonna get wounding strike again. -Auron 17:19, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- It does look like a Derv but remember that its been stated armor will not be profession specific--SirBoss 17:58, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- Exactly. --smøni 17:59, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- GW2 is a whole new game with different professions and races, new technology, and expanded gameplay.
- I'm gonna go ahead and assume that the sources (listed at the bottom of the page), are correct and that information isn't taken out of context, meaning that Dervishes probably aren't in the game. Not to mention, that thing didn't even look remotely like a Dervish unless you're trying to see a Dervish. ··· Danny Pew Pew 19:16, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

GW Store Typo
Just a heads up, when viewing "Products" and clicking on "Guild Wars Trilogy" the promotional note needs an added space. "Limited-Time Promotion - Purchase this item before January 5, 2010 to apply Guild Wars Eye of the North to your account for FREE." Magic Talk 00:07, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- Cheers, I will let them know about it. --Regina Buenaobra 21:54, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
SRO and GW Skill Icons Usage
Just bringing this to your attention, Silkroad Online, a popular "Free 2 Play" MMO that stays afloat by using a cash shop was recently posted on Guru to be using skill icons PRETTY similar to Guild Wars. It looks like they are nearly the exact same except changed in little ways and considering one of them is literally a World of Warcraft skill icon but with some extra lines added to it, I wouldn't be surprised. Here's a few examples! Not all of them resemble GW Icons but to point out a few, top row 1st one = Aftershock, 3rd row 3rd one = Smite Hex, 5th row 4th one = Ravenous Gaze, Reverse Hex, Executioner's Strike, and Winter. Since they get profit off this game, thought I'd bring it to your attention just in case. ^^ DarkNecrid 00:17, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- I shrank the icons and made a comparison, they aren't replicas. They are similar, especially the aftershock one, but not identical. The artists probably took some inspiration from GW icons or any of the other million MMO/fantasy game icons out there. –Jette 00:32, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- As an aside, this Defense of the Ancients hero (a custom map for Warcraft, Frozen Throne, in case you didn't know) uses the Conjure Phantasm icon for their ultimate skill, Haunt: [1]. King Neoterikos 02:57, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sue them! GOGOGO. Or just...you know...threaten a suit for copyright infringement so they'll remove it. Karate Jesus 02:59, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Alternatively, they could just be not dicks and pretend they don't know about it because ruining some stupid kids' fun is totally worth the $20,000.00 it takes just to write a letter involving the word "lawsuit." Besides, didn't you know? Changing the colors and using the JPEG compression method changes the file sufficiently that it's considered an original work, even though everyone knows it's bullshit. I can prove it, too: run it through a hash sum, it'll be totally different. –Jette 04:25, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- SRO isn't made by a stupid kid, it's made by a popular Korean company. :p And Icefrog is an adult working at Valve now, but I believe it's "ok" that he uses GW images in DotA because he does not receive any profit from DotA, King Neo. DarkNecrid 04:57, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- That's true. King Neoterikos 06:44, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, Jette, that's not entirely true. I couldn't very well grey-scale and recompress all of the icons in Guild Wars to use for my own game and then sell copies. In fact, I'm not entirely certain that that would be legal even from a non-commercial standpoint. It would depend directly on the licensing of the original icons. It could be argued that, given the DotA tournaments that take place, the use of Guild Wars icons is in violation of any non-free-use licensing. It's all up to the ANet legal department, though. ··· Danny Pew Pew 23:58, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

- Unfortunately, if Anet wants to keep making their own derivative works, like say in an upcoming sequel, then they have to also legally protect the logos of their current skills and int-prop in its native region. Not all corporations shit on everyone and fire off CnD's just b/c they wanna be dicks (lol, Sony/WMG). They do it b/c failng to do so can mean the loss of rights to file over much bigger infractions later (with the exception of Parody law). *shrug* --ilr 22:46, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
