Feedback talk:User/Kayuu/Choosing Your Character Voice

+1. Support. There've been similar posts made over the last couple years suggesting this very thing. It would go a long way towards personalization. However, at this late stage of the game's development, I doubt it's a feature we'll see come launch. Hopefully, they'll consider it for a future expansion. Someday, when the sound design technology, home computing power, and will exist to do so, it would be great to see a character customization option wherein the player reads a stock text paragraph. Using this recording, the game then renders all character dialog using the tone, pitch, rhythm, and pacing of the player's speech. Sliders will permit the player to change these qualities to further customize their character's voice. Maybe in ten years we'll see a games developer actually give this a try in a game. I am not too disappointed by the voices and not to happy with the ones in games where i can choose it. Only my Charr (may somewhere in the future) shouldnt sound like a little girl XP --Naruuu 22:11, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
I would like to see this, but...it's horribly difficult to get quality acting for the full range of dialogues, combat cries, and random chatter needed for the player character. (It's even harder for many of the random NPCs.) Changing the pitch or tone of just one character would mean editing every single audio "file."
Perhaps ANet could hire one of the voice altering software companies to go in and offer a small set of customizations: based on your character's race and profession, the choice of personality would also impact the voice. (Or perhaps even the other biography questions.) This wouldn't give us direct control over the voice, but it would mean that my character is likely to sound different from yours, even if the prof and race are the same. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 08:07, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

I support this idea in part only. Changing the tone and pitch of a voice would require SIGNIFICANT programming work of the game's engine. At present voice is provided by voice actors in recorded files, so it cannot use those which would have cost tens of thousands of dollars and thus be throwing away money. Thus, it is idiotic. The voices however are irritating, especially when the United States is 1 of 196 countries in the world, overly American voices are generally offensive to the ears to non-Americans which is why all games go with English voice actors. My female Nord (uh, sorry, Nor-n, lol, plagerism) sounds like a friggen transvestite body builder on methadone. Bashprompt 11:34, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

BTW, I am german. You can be happy, besides the fact, that there are still many dialogues are missing in german, the voices dont have such good quality and the german is may not wrong, but is often weird like using phrases in ways noone ever would here^^. --Naruuu 23:55, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Bashpromt, grow up. Besides, while the US is one out of 196, its also where the game was MADE. Moving on, Perhaps is correct, many have asked this on this site alone over the development of GW2...but the fact remains that its not viable. Voice actors need to be paid, and voice acting takes a lot of time. And frankly, Arenanet isn't a very large game company, their resorces are limited. In regards to quality, be honest with yourselves, how good or bad the voices or a particular voice are is completely subjective. ANd yeah, we are a decade away from a viable (and cost effetive) synthetic voice program. Altering the voices isn't as easy as some make it sound, I'm in audio production, believe me you will want to tear your hair out sometime.--Will Greyhawk 04:44, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
