History of the Black Hand Gang
- The Black Hand Gang was established in Guild Wars in May of 2005 by a group of four coworkers (plus one spouse). Its hall hath a nice seat upon the Isle of Meditation.
- Despite the BHG’s eminently violent tendencies (not!), it was not named for an organized crime mob. The original guild leader, Gerwon Nermong, asked his potential members—who had not yet purchased Guild Wars—for suggestions for clan names. The name which stuck, The Black Hand Gang, derives from the children’s mystery series by Hans Jurgen Press, which member Sofi Anguissola remembered loving to read as a child.
- The guild grew slowly at first. There were definitely growing pains, and different opinions on the direction of the guild. Leadership changed hands from Gerwon to Sofi.
- Eventually, there came a new member here, another one there, and members invited their friends, spouses, and siblings to join as well. The guild now encompasses members from all over the U.S. and Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and China. The guild also has a presumably unusually large contingent of female players.
- Through the friendship of one of BHG’s officers, Xavier Blackthorn, with the leader of the Blood Warriors [BW], Piper Ravenheart, as well as Sofi’s friendship with Gryphon Radwing, the co-leader of the Knights of Gryphon [KoG], the BHG was already in an informal 3-guild alliance by the time of the release of Guild Wars: Factions. Leadership passed to Elektra Rain 2010 and continued to add new members under his leadership, including a small but strong mid-western US contingent.
- In 2011, leadership of BHG passed to Dahgora Taggen and they made the hard decision to break the old Alliance to join a more active one due to the few players engaged in KoG and BW. BHG struck off on their own in 2012 to form their own alliance (again). They currently lead a small alliance of devoted past and present Guild Wars players and look forward to continued cooperation with their old friends when GW2 is released (and beyond).
- The BHG, in concert with sister and allied guilds, continues to recruit players who strive for the same goal in the game of Guild Wars: cooperation, experimentation, friendship, respect, support, and above all, fun.
