Policy is not stringent on this wiki. This means:
- You do not need to read any rules before contributing. If unfamiliar with the policy, you can just do what seems sensible and non-disruptive, and it will usually be right. If not, it is still okay -- any mistakes are easy to correct (older versions of a page can be restored from its revision history). If others disagree with your change, we'll generally reverse it or discuss it and figure out what to do.
- The spirit of the policy trumps the letter of the policy, and consensus trumps both. Lawyering with loopholes and technicalities does not hold here. Keep in mind though, that if someone points out a violation, there is often a good reason behind it, and which might not be immediately obvious. Users are still responsible for reasonably foreseeable effects of their actions.
- You can always do whatever you reasonably believe would be supported by consensus. What matters most is whether your general behavior respects consensus. If there is a potential policy issue, you are encouraged to first check through discussion and/or the policy change process. If you don't, then at least be ready to explain as much as necessary.
Note that despite not being stringent overall, policy sometimes ends up sternly enforced out of practicality. Some policies may be based on reasons that are not apparent or universally agreed with, or may draw somewhat arbitrary lines between what is allowed and disallowed. A difference in judgment here does not automatically translate to open leeway in ignoring these.
