In Memory of Wynthyst

We at ArenaNet were saddened to learn of the passing of Wynthyst, a vital member of the Guild Wars community.

Wynthyst was an active member of the wikis, where she played an active role as contributor and then administrator. She was passionate about wikis and her passion was contagious. Wynthyst interacted a lot with ArenaNet on the Guild Wars wiki and her work over the years was recognized with the creation of an NPC in the Zaishen Menagerie who represented her love of animals (birds in particular). She continued her work on the Guild Wars 2 wiki, always with the same unstoppable energy and cheerfulness.

After a while, she decided to level up her dedication to wikis by taking up an offer to work with Curse.com on their official wikis. As busy as she was, Wynthyst continued to talk and offer advice from time to time to folks in the Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 wiki communities. In the words of the Gamepedia team, "She was an irreplaceable part of our team and community and will be missed immensely."

In memory of Wynthyst, ArenaNet built a new grave in the Ebonhawke cemetery in Guild Wars 2, where a drakehound and a tamable juvenile lynx stand respectfully nearby.

The inscription reads:

Thyst, 1277-1327

Tireless scribe and friend to animals

She left her mark on Tyria

and is now at peace in the Mists

• I will always remember my first contact with Wynthyst, as I was just appointed Wiki Liaison at the beginning of 2011. It was an intense period of discussion for the wiki community and she was drafting a message about this to the studio. She contacted me to tell me about this, and her words were kind and encouraging. She also introduced me to a lot of people and wiki processes. When she joined Curse, we also had a quick chat where she told me how glad she was of having been part of the Guild Wars wiki community and how excited she was with her new job. I've always enjoyed talking to her as I could feel and share her passion for wikis. When I shared the news in the studio, a few people remembered her fondly from the work she did with them in Guild Wars. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 18:54, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

• I used to edit this wiki as an anonymous IP, until the day I saw a heated discussion on the recent changes page. My ignorance of the matter led me to contact one of the editors involved in-game. To my luck, Wyn happened to be online, and she spoke with such passion about her thoughts and vision that within the week I had this account made; and made for all of the right reasons, thanks to her. • I have left a few words on the GW2 Wynthyst memorial page too but just wanted to put something here as it was in this wiki that I first met Wyn.

Wyn, you meant more to us that you ever knew. The Guild Wars universe and Guild Wars wikis are worse off without you. When you left us, a piece of them died with you and left a hole that can never be filled. Thankyou for everything and it was a privilege to know you and we will miss you dearly. • I'm deeply saddened to see this page, as I formerly had no idea of this happening. Wyn was an amazing person and played an important role in getting me active in this community. She helped me out on my first day here and taught me pretty much everything I know about editing the wiki. May she forever rest in peace. • Im absolutely heartbroken at only just now finding out this news. For a good year and a half i have been waiting for a reply to a message i sent her on sent on GW2, And now i know why i never received a reply. After making contact through email in 2013 and organising to meet up after a year of not playing, i was excited to again be apart of her Guild like i was for many years, and still am, in GW1. I first met Wyn when i was on a journey to craft my first set of 15k armour. Here i was almost begging for someone to send me some damask in Drocknars Forge, until Wyn messaged me saying "You shouldn't beg like that... just ask the right person for help :)", Followed by enough damask to craft my armour. It was from that moment she began teaching me the ways to play the game properly, helping me trade items between my two accounts, and holding onto items that i couldn't fit in my inventory then trading them back to me when i needed them. She became an in-game mother to me, as i was just a teenager back then. She was a friend with great advice and would put her Wiki page work on hold just to help me out in game. I remember the last time we played together, She was helping me attempt the Titan mission in Ascalon.. which we failed multiple times. Eventually we both gave up but she noted that one day we would get it done! :'). Such a tragic loss of a dear friend and a beautiful soul. Today i sat in front of my computer, determined to track her down once again and reignite out friendship, only to find she has passed away. It feels nostalgic to remember the days hanging out in the Guild Hall, knowing your character would always be sitting there while you worked. For countless hours we would chat at all hours of the morning, reminiscing about the Anet Nurfed days and discussing game tactics. Rest In Peace my beautiful natured friend. You made an incredible impression upon the Guild Wars community, and your contributions shall always be highly valued for what you have done. Thank you for everything.
