Guild Wars Wiki talk:Arbitration committee/2010-02-20-User:Unendingfear

Since Aiiane is the only de facto bureaucrat at the moment, there's currently no arbitration committee, so we'll have to wait until the election's resolved for this to get further in that regard. In the meantime: can you explain what the issue is here? -- pling User Pling sig.png 19:54, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Honestly, I think that the ban is a bit over kill. And no, we're not related. If we were, I don't think we'd be posting on eachother's page. He lives in Florida, I live In Virginia and West Virginia.
Second of all, the fact I told him to do the whole Nazi thing doesn't mean he should take all of the punishment. It was all my idea, I have this thing for swastikas.
Third of all, it's not an official swastika because think about it, the real one is tilted backwards like 45 degrees. The one that's straight and square is the Buddhist swastika.
Finally, why so serious? →[ »Halogod User Halogod35 Sig.png (talk ]← 22:04, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
You misunderstand the difference between the Swatstika and the Bhuddist symbol. It isn't the angle they are displayed on, it is the direction of the pinwheel. One is clockwise, the other is anti-clockwise, but I cannot remember which is which. As a resident of Germany, I'm not about to go and start researching as such searches could get me a lot of unwanted attention and potentially jailtime. Misery 22:07, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
No research required, that's why we have wiki →[ »Halogod User Halogod35 Sig.png (talk ]← 22:08, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Also, I believe the nazi one is always 45 degrees no matter what. →[ »Halogod User Halogod35 Sig.png (talk ]← 22:09, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) If it turned, the Nazi Swatstika would rotate clockwise. Misery, learn to SSL. –Jette 22:10, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes, except even visiting that page would be legally ill-advised for me. I'm also reasonably certain you are incorrect on the angle thing, but it really is neither here nor there. It's clear what was trying to be implied or represented. Misery 22:11, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Banning unending fear is lame. Eh killz aliems and doesn't afraid of anything. But really, everyone involved was aware that whatever was said and done was in a joking manner. So why is he blocked? Also, i herd Counter-clockwise was cool? --71.193.48.146 22:13, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Still. It's not like I'm hilter or anything. It's just how we've always greeted. →[ »Halogod User Halogod35 Sig.png (talk ]← 22:15, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I'm not commenting on the validity of either ban at all. Just on your comments here. Misery 22:17, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Still...That kind of behavior should be kept out of the public domain, especially on the wiki. --Lania Elderfire 22:18, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Whether or not it should be kept from the public domain is a matter of semantics. If you see something wrong with it then of course your going to think it shouldnt be done. If the person doing it doesnt think its wrong then why should they refrain? What if im a muslim (or whatever those guys are in mid-eastern countries that treat women as property) and i think its wrong for a woman to be using the internet? Does that mean that GWW should ban females from using the wiki? --71.193.48.146 22:26, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Couldn't hurt. Misery 22:30, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
If you were on a Guild Wars Wiki where the consensus, and the sysop(s) attempting to represent/enforce/guage the consensus, was against women on the internet, then I'm sure a block by a sysop on a woman would be agreed upon by the consensus, and thus not an issue. This is a terrible response because that is a terrible analogy. (And I'm trying to disregard the premise you've proposed that Muslims as a whole are against female rights.)
There's no point arguing whether the symbol was technically the one used by the Nazis or the one used by Buddhists. Unendingfear's intention to use it as the Nazi one is still clear, going by his comments about how much worse than the Nazis he is and greeting you with "Heil Halo" (in a discussion about how he's just come back from a block, no less). Whether or not you told him to do the Nazi thing is somewhat irrelevant, since he still brought it onto the wiki. If you guys converse with arm-raising or whatever in some other form of chat, that's something I'm not really interested in; doing it on the wiki is where I find it problematic. Even if it was done in a joking manner, it's still inappropriate. -- pling User Pling sig.png 22:57, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) It has nothing to do with whether "I" think it is wrong or not, it is the public majority. The majority public that guildwars wiki serves, which is mostly the western world, view nazism as neither funny or benign. The majority public user of GWW are not hardline talibans so that point is relatively moot. If someone walks down the street (a public domain) with a swastika t-shirt in NYC, you can bet there will be problems. --Lania Elderfire 22:59, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
I don't imagine this is actually an issue for an arb com against Unending. Use of the Swastika or other Nazi references is something ArenaNet has not allowed in game since day one. The conduct of users on this wiki is suppose to be somewhat, at least, within the standards of the RoC, isn't it? I mean, we don't allow people to advertise selling items for real money, or senselessly attack and harass other users. There is a very large portion of the global community that finds the use of the swastika or references to other nazi activity to be very offensive, and I would like to think that even in this community there is at least enough common sense to understand that. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 23:03, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
I would think so... and yet here we are. Common sense ain't so common as they say... :-) --Lania Elderfire 23:05, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
There is no problem in this case, Unending did something what we don't want to see on this wiki (or others), so he got a suspension/ban. I don't see why it is necessary to bring this for arbcomm. His intention (why he used it) is not important, its just common sense that people see that as offending. For me, its not personal offending, but I also don't like it to see on this wiki or on another site. There are just subjects you don't use for jokes, the content can be too sensitive for people, and again, I hope people realise that in common sense. If not and people do things like Unending (less or worse), a suspension is something you can suspect here. -- Cyan User Cyan Light sig.jpg 23:18, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Am I missing something, or is this request not against Unendingfear at all, but instead his blocking sysop? If so, it should be moved to the appropriate title. —Tanaric 17:02, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

It's about the "Unendingfear issue", so I don't have a problem with it being titled Unendingfear. The case is more about Unendingfear's block than me blocking Unendingfear, so it's still more relevant to have the current name. Also, I don't think it should always have to be based on something against User X, just as long as it's appropriately relevant. -- pling User Pling sig.png 17:07, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
