Question

(I'm also jumping on the bandwagon of people who ask the same question to all candidates, so bear with me a bit) I would like to ask, in what ways do you think being a bureaucrat allowed you to help the wiki more than if you were a common user or a sysop? Erasculio 02:13, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

The majority of the defined bureaucrat responsibility beyond that of "a common user or a sysop" is ArbComm - our other unique responsibilities exist but are mostly matters of process (user rights adjustment). Over the course of my term we've had 3 requests for ArbComm involvement in a case. Of these 3, 2 were accepted; I voluntarily abstained from one of those two cases as I did not wish any views against me personally by the individual involved, nor my less than perfect initial response, to come in the way of a viable resolution. For the accepted case which I did participate in, I believe I found and proposed a practical means of addressing the situation while at the same time keeping the disruption that had accompanied some previous ArbComm cases from recurring. Well, to begin with I should point out that no one is restricted to voting for a single candidate, as per the election policy. Also, I have never voted for myself, nor do I plan to. :)

So I hesitate to answer your question, as whatever I answer will effectively be stating what my votes will be in stage 3, even though it is not yet time for that stage, and our elections model is not supposed to give the actual votes of sysops or bureaucrats any more weight than a regular user, yet stating our votes ahead of time would in some sense be doing exactly that.

The intent of my question was more the why than the who. I was wondering what different candadites thought was important in a candidate and if they had those same qualities themselves.

Ah, I see; in the more general sense it's certainly a valid question. I could mimic DE and write a small essay on the topic, but quite honestly, I'd likely end up echoing most of what he wrote. I share similar views on the qualities necessary in a bureaucrat. One thing I would elaborate on though is the matter of impartiality. On one hand, I prefer bureaucrats to be involved with the wiki - in my view, anyone involved in managing a community should be involved in it. On the other hand, it's important for arbitration to be impartial. A good bureaucrat in my eyes is one who can balance both of these, being both involved in the community but able to maintain impartiality when required to do so. In exception cases where this is manifestly impossible, they should have both the self-awareness and the courage to make this clear and place themselves in a position where they will not be required to.
