Shield
From Guild Wars Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search
A shield is an off-hand weapon that provides a bonus to a character's overall armor rating (AR). They can take up to two upgrades; in Nightfall and Eye of the North, these are provided via an inscription and a shield handle.
The maximum AR for a shield without any attribute requirement is 8; it can be as high as 16 with an appropriate rank in Strength, Tactics, Command, Motivation or Fast Casting (in case of the Anniversary Shield "Curtain"). The rules that determine the bonus for characters that do not meet the minimum rank are complicated; see below for details.
Properties[edit]
- Equip: Off-hand
- Linked attributes: Strength, Tactics, Command, Motivation, Fast Casting (Anniversary Shield "Curtain" only)
- Maximum armor rating: 16
- Upgrade components: Shield Handles and inscriptions
- inherent bonuses: Shields that drop in the Prophecies or Factions campaigns can have an inherent bonus rather than an inscription; these include bonuses that are not available via inscriptions (e.g. +8 armor vs. Trolls).

Notes[edit]
- Shield mods always take effect, whether or not the wielder meets the shield's requirement.
- Burning Shield, Shield Bash, and Shield Stance are skills that require a shield to be equipped.
- The maximum AR of shields will always be eight more than the attribute requirement, up to a maximum of 16. For example, the maximum AR for requirement 5 shields is 13.
- As a general rule, shields grant up to +8 AR for characters that do not meet the minimum requirements (shields without a requirement will always grant their stated AR). The exact amount varies depending on the shield:
Effective AR Source Shield's AR Notes +8 Drops ≤ 16 For example an Elementalist using an AR 16 Strength shield, whether requirement 8 or higher. +8 Non-random 16 Reward shields; from weaponsmith or collectors. Unique shields. +5 Non-random ≤ 15 " +6 Longtooth's Shield 12 The only shield with a requirement that grants +6 AR if its requirement is not met.
- It is not possible for shields found as drops to grant "+X energy". Fytch the collector is the only non-random source of these shields, selling the Runic Shield
- The Chimeric Prism behaves similar to a shield when certain conditions are met. As well as behaving as a "+5 energy" shield item requiring Strength or Expertise, or as a "+8 energy" shield item requiring Divine Favor.
- The Canthan Targe grants +2 Energy when certain requirement conditions are met
Trivia[edit]
- Xun Rao's Quill is described as a Parrying Dagger; however, for all practical purposes, it functions like a shield.
