why was the name changed?

Because in Tagalog (Filipino language) the vagina is sometimes referred to as pekpek. Also, coincidentally, Alana (wala na - often pronounced as alana) means "there's no more". ILikeKiwis 19:11, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

No lies here, although kids are usually the only ones who use pekpek, it's not as vulgar as some other names. Also, it's kind of disturbing how Edibo kind of sounds like edible and I literally laughed out loud when I saw Alana Pekpek. ILikeKiwis 05:59, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Wow..... bad reason for a name change

So a name change is in order every time a name is found to mean something vulgar/obscene in a language only a few thousand people speak? The primary language of Guild Wars is English and it should stay that way. Other languages can be ignored for all I care. Pretty soon we'll be renaming things because they mean something offensive in an obscure slang context that 99.999% of people haven't heard of and don't care about.

I don't even think the offensive reference was intentional when Anet made that name either.

Seriously, how would you like it if you made a character with a name that's perfectly fine in English, but translates to something obscene in another language and you get banned for it or received a character deletion?

i shouldn't be surprised anymore at how many xenophobes play a global online fantasy game featuring dozens of races and different kinds of characters.

note how the vaguely ignorant OP is also the only one who doesn't even seem to sign at all. more than "a few thousand" people speak tagalog; at least half the filipinos i know in the US speak it fluently so i'd imagine there are probably a million speakers of it in the US alone. wikipedia says there are at least 49 million speakers in the philippines. it's hardly "obscure," and it's apparently only you, not "people," who "haven't heard of and don't care about" it. they obviously changed it because more than one person noticed and said something. they might have risked alienating and losing customers if they didn't make an extremely simple adjustment. how is that a "bad reason" unless you simply irrationally dislike people who speak other languages?68.81.213.14 19:13, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

It's a valid reason for changing even if there's just a few thousand tagalog-speaking GW players in the world, as GW is not so popular here in the Philippines. But us pinoys always get a good laugh at the original last name and wonder if there was a pinoy programmer who let that slip as an inside joke. I've always thought that Regina (who has Filipino ancestry) has something to do with the change, as the update happened just a few months of her becoming ANET's CM. Any chance Regina can confirm or deny this? ;) Anyways, pinoys were saddened abt this change but good laughs apparently have an end. -Sef326 15:09, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

I think the pekpek's since there are a few of them were user submitted names during that name that boss contest, so it may have been intentional.
