HP[edit]

This guy has like 100000000000000000 hp or something. Took 10 minutes of spamming kegs to kill him before update, Not even gona bother now, Cynder is much easier :S 81.99.144.112 12:27, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

removed the kill by keg spamming note, its not possible, takes to long between each keg to easily kill Shadowshock 01:06, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

so any tips on how to kill him (with henchies and heroes that is)? i gave it a try and once my party was dead a few times HP were too low and he was able to kill all my party in just a few moves. scattering helped deliver a few blow before dying but it was not enough. i saw a tip about getting him near the rez shrine however it did not seem possible as soon as he gets to a certain point he goes back to the center of the room.

Easy. He's a fire nuker, take a decent prot monk and lern2flag/spread. Solid dual front, dual back, quad midline works well. VoR/backfire spam, SS/SV and imbagons are all key to taking down anything tough.
I flagged the h/h back with me tanking and had my prot monk hero put Protective Bond on me. After that, it was a piece of cake to kill him. I also brought along Ward Against Harm on my water ele hero, just in case. FloppyJoe 18:18, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

I found "Save Yourselfs" helps a lot. I just completed with H/H in normal mode. Wiped a few times, but completed without any consumables. Also, keep spread out and dont stand still to help counter his elite. Obviously pull the smaller pop-up groups first. - Ole Man Winter

actual boss?[edit]

Isn't magmus a boss-like foe rather than an actual boss? I'm pretty sure he can't be capped from, and it's also very inconsistent with every other dungeon iirc. – Emmett 04:55, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I think he can be capped from....don't know if that changes anything. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 23:32, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Anti-daze[edit]

Can he be dazed? I took spear swipe, but it didn't worked. Made it anyway, but still wondering82.73.136.207 20:49, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

I found he cannot be dazed. Broad Head Arrow has no effect on him whatsoever, the condition does not even show. Captainofithilien 08:00, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

Not a boss-like[edit]

He regens health automatically. So or he's different, or he's not a boss-like Shadow Form Slayer

Managed him in HM with H/H took a while but only used 1 cc.98.199.73.247 06:58, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Wow...that's really... relevant. 90.208.113.57 16:13, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

He is definetely a boss. He regens health and has the red aura. I'm going to change the description. Ðαrĸ Яεvəηςєr User Dark Revenger Sign.png 16:09, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

"He"[edit]

How do we know Magmus is a "he"? Some Ninja Dude 03:05, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

A fair question. I've changed the language in the article to be gender-neutral; I challange anyone to justify changing it back to male. --Mme. Donelle 15:40, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

-us is a masculine form...82.217.140.3 00:29, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

No it isn't. While most 2nd declension Latin words ARE masculine, the 2nd declension -us ending does not signify masculine. Furthermore, you're entirely forgetting about the 4th declension. 69.249.223.63 03:17, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

4th is also mainly masculine. So allmost all words ending in -us are masculine, it's safe to assume magmus is a male too.

Mainly isn't the same as almost all. Anyway, Magmus is an ooze. There's no reason to assume it even has a single gender. --Irgendwer 20:15, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Cyndr the Mountain Heart[edit]

Cyndr seems to be easier than Magmus - at least for me. I was a Spirit Spammer with SoS, spiritleech aura, bloodsong, vampirism, summon spirits, pain inverter, anguished was lingwah (pain), and recuperation. I suggest you just let the spirits to the work since carrying the keg would most likely make you a target for pyroclastic shot which could kill spirits nearby. I did this on Normal Mode btw. 71.129.51.88 22:33, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Lol, after reading my skills I just noticed that anguished does not produce pain XD 71.129.51.88 22:39, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
LOLOLOLOL I just figured out that the quest is not repeateable. LOLOLOL again. 71.129.51.88 23:57, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

If Magmus wipes your entire party...[edit]

Resistance to interrupts[edit]

Has anyone else found Magmus difficult or impossible to interrupt in Hard mode? --Irgendwer 01:03, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

I haven't noticed that he's any more or less difficult to interrupt than other bosses. Can you provide some evidence that he's hard to interrupt? -- Hong 14:35, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
This should illustrate the point. In both cases, I used an interrupt skill and Magmus was not interrupted. These results should be easy to replicate. --Irgendwer 21:18, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Your image shows you are using Cry of Frustration while Magmus was using a spell. CoF does not interrupt spells, only skills - on the main target, anyway. --Ellisande

Spells are a subset of skills. Put another way, all spells are skills, not all skills are spells. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 15:38, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
All things in skill bars are skills. In theory, CoF is capable of interrupting shouts, flash enchants, stances and all other types of skills. In actual gameplay, however, that is not possible due to them activating such skills instantly, leaving no room for the actual interrupt. But 2 rupts on persumably 2 different casts is not really substantial evidence. It may have been that you were unlucky twice on a small chance of failing to interrupt Magmus. Try like 5 rupts on one SH and do that about 20 times and then you have evidence that he is hard to interrupt. :) - Infinite - talk 15:46, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

I used to micro CoF on my mes hero and was never able to interrupt a spell used by the main target, even the longer casting spells like Meteor Shower. It did, however, when I successfully interrupted the main target, interrupt other skills and spells being used by the surrounding foes due to its AOE affect. Just my experience. --Ellisande

CoF interrupts any skill, as has been stated. It would take less than 2 minutes to test yourself: go to the Isle of the Nameless and cast CoF on Master of Lightning as soon as you enter aggro range. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 16:37, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Keep in mind that there are skills that prevent interrupts. Perhaps you were seeing the effects of one of those skills? -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 16:39, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Irgendwer is entirely correct, he does seem to be resistant to interrupts. Also all the counter-arguments are rediculous. As stated, CoF is capable of interrupting anything with a casting time unless some effect is in place to prevent interruption. Spells are skills, and as shown in the screenshots, the damage and text bubble that accompany a succesful CoF rupt are readily apparent, showing he did not miss the rupts. The creature article itself shows Magmus has no skills that prevent interrupts. Let's hope that clears it up. Kay - 08:36, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
"difficult or impossible to interrupt in Hard mode" Not entirely-entirely. Just resistant, but not difficult nor impossible. So far I would say about 1 in 4 (close to 1 in 5) rupts actually lands. If that is difficult then you're not quite used to troublesome scenarios. - Infinite - talk 10:53, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Boss? or Boss-like?[edit]

After reading the talk pages here and at Guild Wiki, I'm inclined to believe that Magmus is indeed a boss.

  1. To prevent this from being debated again, it would be helpful to have screens (e.g. capping SH from it).
  2. We should probably note this as an {{anomaly}}, since the other dungeon-quest targets are boss-like.

Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 05:32, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Here's a screen. I don't know that Magmus's boss status is anomalous though, since Freezie and Fronis Irontoe are also bosses. --Irgendwer 07:15, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
There are 18 dungeons and 23 named foes that must be killed in a final battle to spawn a dungeon chest. Of those, only three (Mags, Freez, and Fronie) are listed as bosses rather than merely boss-like. Isn't that at least noteworthy (if not anomalous)? Plus: both Freezie and Fronis belong to anomalous dungeons (their reward chests spawn cheap consumables, Freezie's defenders give no XP, Fronis is a solo dungeon that requires using a form, and neither have any LoD treasures). — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:53, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
I would say that Magmus belongs to an anomalous dungeon as well, since it is the only one with a spawn that changes based on your progression through the storyline. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 16:38, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Good point. Mebbe that's how we should phrase a note in each, e.g. this dungeon is unusual b/c ... (it needn't be listed as a formal anomaly). — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:41, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Makes sense to me. I was thrown off by the word "anomaly" because that, to me, implies a possible developer oversight. Although now that I think about it, I suppose there's no way to be sure that the small number of end bosses was deliberate. --Irgendwer 19:08, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh. I think of anomaly as anything unusual, sometimes intended by ANet (but often not). However, I don't think it's usually important to distinguish between a Note and an Anomaly (while I think it's always important to separate Bugs from either). — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:19, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
It's a boss, all other dungeon "bosses" are boss-like. This is an anomaly.
It's a dungeon with 2 different playthroughs, but one of them is a single-play quest. Like with other quests that alter dungeons it would not be an anomaly, however, due to the fact that both spawns trigger the end-chest to appear, it is an anomaly.
Anomalies are what the word implies; different from the general trend. Magmus and this dungeon are anomalies within the game, whether intended or not. - Infinite - talk 08:55, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
"It's a boss, all other dungeon "bosses" are boss-like." As noted above, this is false.
"...due to the fact that both spawns trigger the end-chest to appear, it is an anomaly." See Bogroot Chest.
In any case, my point was that we don't slap an {{anomaly}} tag on something just because it doesn't follow the trend. --Irgendwer 19:24, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I stand corrected. - Infinite - talk 09:49, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Review of the unusual[edit]

(Reset indent)

We often slap anomaly tags on all sorts of things. Of course that doesn't we should in this case. What we know:

  • Out of 23 dungeon-end targets that have names, only three are true bosses rather than boss-like (Freezie, Fronis, and our friend, Maggie).
  • Of of 18 dungeons, HoS is the only dungeon that spawns two different versions depending on whether or not you take a quest.
    • Take a quest, you get Cyndyr and the primary mission-like HoS quest. Don't take, you get Magmus without a quest.
      • HoS is also unusual that you do not need a quest to get to the end-foe. (Some dungeons automatically give you the quest.)
    • Bogroots is similar: two boss-like foes and spawns, depending on which quest you take. Both boss-likes generate the same reward chest.
    • Two Asura-area dungeons are similar depending on which entrance you take: Bloodstone Caves/Finding the Bloodstone and Oola's Lab/Elusive G'mancer.

(People should feel free to add to the above list, even though my signature appears below. Please note disagreements below.)

So, the questions become:

  • Are any of the above facts worth noting?
    • If yes, are they anomalous enough to tag {{anomaly}}? Or just unusual?
    • If yes, what articles should contain the notes? (For example, the list above — or a part of it — could be presented on Dungeon rather than any of the specific articles.)

Personally, I'm ambivalent: I think all of the above facts are interesting and I can understand why others might not. — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:22, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

These are my preliminary thoughts; of course I'm interested to hear what others think.
  • Only 3 dungeons have end bosses instead of end boss-like foes. I'm uncertain about the significance of this fact because I don't fully understand why boss-like foes even exist.
  • Heart of the Shiverpeaks and Bogroot Growths spawn a different boss depending on quest influences. This is already noted on Dungeon.
    • On the other hand, Finding the Bloodstone and Elusive Golemancer are simply quests that take place on a dungeon without any true dungeon aspects such as end chests and Beacons of Droknar.
  • HoS does not require that you have a quest active to complete it (presumably substituting Budger Blackpowder for one). This is noted on Heart of the Shiverpeaks and Dungeon.
In conclusion, the information mentioned is all documented for those with the inclination to look for it. These points are unusual but unlikely to confound players to the point that a conspicuous warning is necessary. --Irgendwer 18:30, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
I think boss-likes exist mostly so you can't cap from them. I also imagine that when a creature designer wants to make a boss (this applies to most, but not all bosses) they "copy and paste" the "normal" version of the creature, give it a few more levels, set a boss flag, and maybe change the skills a bit. Boss-like foes are generally not slightly scaled up versions of other creatures, but unique creatures. I think Fronis Irontoe's and SLOTS dungeons are "joke" dungeons, and very different from the other dungeons. HoS is a bit different too, but definitely not in the "joke" category. Freezie and Fronis are also uncappable despite being bosses, the former only has monster skills, and the later doesn't allow a signet of capture to be used. Thus, I think Magmus is an anomaly, you can cap from it even though it is a pretty standard dungeon boss. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 18:53, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm good with Irgendwer's analysis (and Manifold's background information): I find the information interesting, but am ok with it the current level of documentation. (The main reason I think it's worth asking: so people have some background the next time it gets removed from Trivia.)Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 23:20, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Help?[edit]

Any help or tips on how to beat him? I've party wiped with heroes around 6 times just from the sheer mass of Oozes there and they don't seem to break easy - using 2 interrupts (panic+ineptitude), 1 ST, myself as SoS, healer and protter, and 2 damage necromancers. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.186.172.103 (talk) at 19:39, 20 September 2011 (UTC).

Natural Resistance[edit]

After fighting magmus a shitload of times I have discovered he has natural resistance; empathy, ss, insidious, PI, etc. only lasted half their durations - i would edit it myself but i have no account due to the account creation restrictions atm. my ign: joncom gree

Most EotN bosses have NR (it's already on this article), which is my best guess as to why it isn't specifically mentioned here.
P.S. If you would like an account, the only way to obtain one currently is by registering on the official Guild Wars 2 wiki (accounts are shared between the two wikis). Due to bot registrations here the account creation on this wiki was temporarily disabled. The wiki apologizes for the massive inconvenience and still welcomes all aspiring editors. :) - Infinite - talk 13:07, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
