Trivia: Wheel of Time[edit]
welll well... another nod to the wheel of time.... Rand Stomweaver. Rand Al'thor is the main character of wheel of time and one of the ways he uses the power (magicc in wheel of time) is to call lightning... from storms that he "weaves" from threads of Sidin (yes he also uses baalfire and deathgates and the like but lightning is used in at least 3 books.) -TehBuG-
- That's REALLY stretching it... ~ Kailianna Firesoul 16:17, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
- Not really, there are a number of allusions to the Wheel of Time in Guild Wars, Eye of the North being one of them, (there is building in the NORTH of the land the Wheel of Time is based called the "Eye of the World" and it is similair to the Eye of the North as a place of great power). Weaving is a word they use in the book to describe how a spell is cast, if a person were to cast lightning they would weave air or fire or something like that to form lightning. - I massively disagree. If it was a reference to this character, why is the boss a ranger? Rand Al'complicatedname would be some variation of elementalist/warrior. I don't recall him wielding a bow at any point in the series (granted, I lost interest around book 3 or 4). - HeWhoIsPale 18:50, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, the very first chapter of the first book has him standing guard on his father's cart with a bow. He's the second best archer in his village next to his father ~Terra
Yeah...I totally agree with the Wheel of Time allusion. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this guy's name. It isn't stretching it at all. BTW that series has gone on for WAY to long...should've ended on book 3. Psychiatric Consultant 17:01, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- Seeing "Rand and Thom" is what made me think of it, though I don't know if Thom is also an allusion of is that's just coincidence. However it seems likely that this guy, at least, is. 82.3.235.183 19:22, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Correct the reference Stormweaver is one of the title attributed to the dragon in the (spellcheck)kathylon cycles which are about rand. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.255.74.81 (talk).
Picture[edit]
Why is his picture an image of a random modnir centaur in EOTN? He's supposed to be in a dungeon not outside where there is snow and trees. Gives a wrong impression to the dungeon boss. Rocketrmd 9:40, 03/31/2011
- Probably because someone deleted the official Rand Stormweaver image, so they just use a random modniir :| I'll try to find a better pic and change the page Rumpo Rampaal 20:33, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with you that it looks silly. We've had several discussions about rendered (no background) vs. screenshot, and they are never conclusive, but that's a bit different than using the same image everywhere when there was already a picture of equal quality with an appropriate background. - Hope this image is a little better. WalkWithMeInHell 22:53, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Trivia removal[edit]
- "Could be a reference to Rand al'Thor from The Wheel of Time series, which uses the theme of weaving to represent both time and power."
I removed this line of trivia from the article because it doesn't meet our relatively low standard for inclusion:
- Coincidental names: Rand is a relatively common name (or at least, not uncommon). Stormweaver is also a kind of standard compound word for RPGs and fantasy fiction.
- Relevance: al'Thor is humanoid, not a centaur.
- Relevance/notability: There are no other parallels between the toon characters: al'Thor is a typical Aiel, a race of Warriors with various special powers. Stormweaver is your basic Ranger boss with no special powers.
While it's plausible that Robert Jordan's Rand inspired the naming of GW's Rand, we usually require more before we include a note in the main article. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:41, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- I don't see why. Should be included simply because Rand is the main character of the series, and the power system uses weaving. It is conceivable that Rand would be a Ranger. 'Stormweaver' would be a conceivable compound word for any fantasy that used weaving in its power system. Should be noted that the Aiel possess the same powers that the other humans in the series can. Yes, Rand is not a centaur, but really, not every reference to a character is a flat out replication of said character. The trivia states that this character could be a reference, I see no harm in keeping it. 68.47.182.211 17:06, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- If we listed every possible reference, the trivia sections would quickly fill up and each link would be less meaningful as a result. (That's about as harmful as anything in the Trivia section can get.) By longstanding consensus, this wiki uses a fairly open standard, but still requires some connection other than a loose association of names. A quick search for Stormweaver shows all sorts of entries, none of which are related to the Robert Jordan series.
- I don't think we're looking for "flat out replication," but neither are we looking for every loose connection between names. Destor shares a name with a Ukian (Star Wars reference), but it's also a city in Quebec (maybe one of the developers lived in Canada?), and a thane in the Retribution of Scyrah; those are each possible references. I think it's better that we don't list any if all we have to on is similarity of names.
- OTOH, if we found that there are, e.g. 4-5 references to The Wheel of Time with nothing more than a naming similarity, I'd be willing to argue that we should include a combined note offering the comparison (but leaving it to the reader to draw their own conclusion, e.g. "this NPC has a name comparable to a character in the TWoT series, similar to NPC B, C, ..."). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:36, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
- "Destor shares a name with a Ukian (Star Wars reference), but it's also a city in Quebec (maybe one of the developers lived in Canada?), and a thane in the Retribution of Scyrah;" Yes, however, if there was a fantasy series whose main character was named Destor, and in one book his mission is to find a mysterious creature that calls itself The Truth, you would undoubtedly add that as trivia. How is this not the case here? 68.47.182.211 21:44, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
