Completing a Ghost Quest[edit]

Just to comment on Thulsey's note in the history, you do need to finish one of the ghost's secondary profession quests. After you complete the quest before this one, whenever you talk to Vanyi to obtain this quest, she will prompt you to return to the Crystal Desert and seek out and finish one of the tasks those ghosts have asked. Only until then will she allow you to take up this quest. --Talonz User Talonz sig.gif // 01:59, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Correct. I think what I objected to before was it made it sound like a player had to do them all, not just one. I should have probably corrected rather than deleted, but I honestly didn't remember at the time what the exact requirement was. Thanks for clarifying. - Thulsey Zheng - talk 02:27, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
I've found a bug. If you've bought all the secondary professions, it won't let you do the secondary profession quests, which means you can't do this quest. I had to remake my warrior because of this, I bought all the secondary professions at ToB, but it wouldn't let me take this quest. I'm suprised nobody's noticed this. --Ghostbuddy 17:42, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Why buy them all when u can get some for free from a quest. The gold u spent on the proffesions could have been used to save black moa chicks :( --Super Range Ranger 17:42, 8 July 2008
This might need confirming but I managed to pick this quest up as soon as I hit Droknar's with my Warrior. I didn't do any of the secondary profession changing quests, however I did 'unlock' other professions at the Temple of Balthazar. Also did the Factions campaign too if that would change anything (Prophecies character). Feragore 15:02, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Are u sure u didnt change ur secondary with Senji(profession changer). He is the only way to change ur secondary proffesion in cantha from what i know so that might have something to do with it Super Range Ranger Cow 10:46, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
I did one of those ghosts challenge, I still can't get the quest. This is realy pissing me off... I've done all it requires and stuff. Why ccan't I still get it?--84.202.1.30 15:22, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Ok I seem to be in the same boat as Ghostbuddy...I have purchased all the secondaries from GToB after doing Napui Quarter in Factions. I have since got Ascended, done A Hero's Journey, and just for good measure did Mesmer Path quest, and Vanyi still won't offer the quest. Am I indeed screwed out of 15 attrib points? Help Plz! (Usaf1a8xx 17:14, 26 July 2010 (UTC))
I made my Ele 22mo ago...I thought my origional Secondary was Ranger, but must've been Mesmer, cuz i just switched to Warrior and mapped back to Droks and now she offers the quest...but I did change my secondary several times before doing Mesmer's Path and she did not offer the quest. She only offered it once I had done Mesmer's Path. So I think maybe if you've bought all the professions from a changer, then you must do a secondary profession quest to get her to offer this quest. (Usaf1a8xx 17:20, 26 July 2010 (UTC))

The quest-box info here is incorrect btw (can someone fix it?), you do not have to complete The Hero's Journey to get the quest The Hero's Challenge. Ander01 19:04, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Requirements[edit]

The You have changed Secondary profession at least once, via a Profession changer...., isn't working for me. I completed The Hero's Journey , changed my secondary at GToB, but she won't give me this quests. Prior to Ascending in the Desert, I changed my secondary at Senji's Corner, maybe that has something to do with it... Oh wait, is that what the peeps above are talking about? Confuzzled.... --Arduinna talk 11:26, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, okay, you need to complete one of the 'Path' quests to make her give you this quests. Editing the Page accordingly. --Arduinna talk 11:35, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
I've read the discussions above, and I have my own quirk to add. On a Proph character I ascended, completed The Hero's Journey, then I used the Profession Changer in GotB to change to Ele/Dervish. She now gives me the quest without doing any of the profession path quests. Albrect Karew 02:36, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
I figured out the problem people, such as Arduinna or Ghostbuddy (from the above section), are having. If a character didn't complete any of the "<Profession>'s Path" quests, but received another secondary profession from a Profession changer, Vanyi won't give you this quest unless your character had a different secondary profession than the one that was chosen during A Second Profession in pre-searing. To fix this all you have to do is change your secondary profession to another one in the Skills and Attributes Panel. This is why it worked for Albrect Karew, he changed the secondary profession for his Ele to Dervish and spoke to Vanyi while his character was E/D to get this quest; however, if he had changed the secondary profession back to its original secondary profession (the one chosen in A Second Profession) Vanyi wouldn't offer this quest to his character. --Silver Edge 09:29, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
This isn't conclusive. I had trouble getting this quest as an E/A (clearly not my original secondary profession, which was Me). I had all 5 The x's Path quests active, and had unlocked all secondary professions at the changer. I swapped secondary profession and changed district, no luck. I did The Necromancer's Path and swapped to secondary necro (with the quest awarder), no luck. I've finally gotten the quest after traveling to Destiny's Gorge and talking to Annelle Fipps (I thought maybe I already did this quest and didn't start the Forgotten Wisdom questline; she didn't offer me any quest related dialogue, of course), which makes no sense at all.--24.201.17.160 07:23, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
So you were able to receive this quest after talking to Annelle Fipps and then returning to Vanyi? --Silver Edge 07:26, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
I wasn't able to get the quest as a E/D, so I went to the prof changer in Isle of Balthazaar and switched to ranger and was able to get the quest from Sanyi then. I attempted none of the path quests.--Daisya 17:15, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Sanyi Sticking.[edit]

My Sanyi will not stop getting stuck. The first time, she froze randomly in the middle of nowhere. Then she started loving up on the stump mentioned in the bug. Perhaps Anet should make her use the /stuck emote every 10 seconds? :P 209.240.183.45 19:12, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

No Need for heroes journey[edit]

File:Gw026.jpg as you can see in the image, i didn't need to finish hero's journey for this quest.

Here's a working image of it. --Silver Edge 05:36, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Requirements of A Hero's Journey[edit]

Is it or isn't it, because I've done the 1st attribute quest on my warrior, went to get this attribute quest, but I get given a different quest instead. Incase it will help/hinder, my warrior has access to all secondaries and hasn't done the profession quests.--Im Irrelevant 18:31, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Corrected the information on the side. It is possible to have both quests active in some circumstances, but for the people who need this information, Hero's Challenge is preceded by Hero's Journey. Koda User Koda Kumi UT.jpeg Kumi 19:16, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
The Hero's Journey doesn't precede The Hero's Challenge, because you don't need to complete Hero's Journey to receive Hero's Challenge. You can complete Hero's Challenge before completing Hero's Journey. --Silver Edge 01:23, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
After completing The Hero's Journey, were you able to get The Hero's Challenge? You most likely weren't able to receive The Hero's Challenge quest because of what your secondary profession was set to when you spoke to the quest giver. See my post in the #Requirements section above or the Anomaly in the Notes section. --Silver Edge 01:23, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
My mistake, notes were correct, I changed my profession after entering Droknar's Forge and managed to get the quest.--Im Irrelevant 01:38, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Quite possible. I never changed my profession prior to The Hero's Journey quest with a proph character. Though I am wondering if it is possible to do Hunted! or Closer to the Stars instead of Augury Rock to get the Hero's Challenge quest. Koda User Koda Kumi UT.jpeg Kumi 21:30, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

I would think that, prior to the existence of Factions or Nightfall, that The Hero's Journey was a requirement to get The Hero's Challenge. Thus for the storyline, it would seem that The Hero's Journey does precede The Hero's Challenge. Lord Mondegreen 21:25, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Maybe, but this is about gameplay requirements. It is NOT necessary to even have accepted the Journey. My toon Ascended in Factions, I changed professions through a profession changer. I came to the desert later to pick up the attribute point quest there and gave myself the tour of all outposts. When I finally came to Droknar's Forge I could pick up both the Journey and Challenge at the same time. The Journey is NOT needed, all that seems to be required is having visited at least one of the desert outposts and having the second secondary profession at least once (thus requiring Ascension as well). The text can clarify that. This requirement is also not true for Prophecies only toons since the GToB also has a profession changer.--Fogeltje 10:27, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
My Ascalon toon is LVL 20, just ascended, purchased all professions @ senji's, currently a Monk/Paragon but have run through all the others, tried talking before I picked up the quests (contrary to what was said earlier, I was able to pick up the quests even though I have all unlocked) and after. Still can not get the quest. Being as this particular anomaly is not consistant, any mention about it possibly happening should NOT be under the "requirements" header. If it were a reliable method to side step a requirement then I am all for it being there. -UPDATE- I am getting scared. I just completed the quest to become the elemenalist... no quest offer. Completed the mesmer's quest, There it is... Whew!

Just to add, in case others are still having trouble: My Ascalon Toon was initially W/Mo, and unlocked Ele, Sin, Rit, Para, Derv in either Senji's or GToB (I can't remember which, sorry). Augury Rock is complete and I did the dragon's lair this morning (I am ascended, but had completed Napui and Hunted! prior to doing the Lair, if that matters). Went to Droks to get The Heroes Challenge as a W/Ele, but was only offered The Heroes Journey quest (NOT the attribute point quest). While still in the town, I tried changing my secondary back to the original monk, then my other unlocked secondaries. Still no Heroes Challenge quest offered... I went back to the desert, walked to Heroes Audience, and completed The Necromancer's path (I'd never been to Seeker's Passage, so completing a Heroes Journey was inconvenient at the moment). Returned to Droks as a W/N. The Heroes Challenge was still not offered, but the dialogue for Heroes Journey was still active (not completed). I went pack to the desert and completed the Heroes Journey by walking to Seeker's Passage. Returned to Droks and received the quest reward for Heroes journey. The Heroes challenge was STILL not offered, but I now had the extended dialogue options for those who completed a heroes Journey (encouraged to go talk with ghosts... again). While in Droks, I tried changing professions through the drop down menu. Still no Heroes Challenge quest offered. I went back to the desert and finished The Mesmer's Path. Returned to Droks and now the Heroes Challenge quest is offered... I hope that helps you guys riddle out the requirements for the quest, it was confusing to me, but to be honest I'm very bad at this wiki stuff. If it's not helpful, feel free to delete this. 97.120.230.80 18:40, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Additional data and updating the requirements[edit]

I would like to also add my account to this story. Char was made 9 months ago, decided to start playing her again. Somewhere along those 9 months I had unlocked all but mesmer alongside the secondary I chose in pre (I can't remember which it was then). I did this by ascending in factions, I had never completed any of the missions or augury rock and had no problem doing the first attribute quest. Vanyi did not give me any choices. So in an attempt to get it to work I started on the idea that I should do the "mesmer" changing quest, since changing my secondary in front of her did not do anything. I completed the three missions and augury rock and went back to vanyi. She offered me the hero's journey. (Now I should've tried to just change my secondary then but I got excited and mapped to destiny's. When I came back...) I changed my secondary in front of her and she offered me the second quest. So for me it was required to be ascended but it was not required for me to change my secondary via the quest, the earlier switches from Balthazar NPC were fine. I just want people to know this in case they freak out and think they're unable to get the second attribute quest like I did. djk 17:49, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

I edited the page to reflect this. I think I was only confused about whether to be ascended from factions would work but it had to be Augury Rock. If this is not okay with the wiki rules please change it back and let me know so I don't make the mistake in the future. Thanks! :) djk 17:51, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Assuming that everyone has correctly articulated their experiences, I've edited the article to simplify the explanation. Arguably, this isn't anomalous: the quest was designed this way, but the description of the requirements is ambiguous. Someone else might want to re-edit the requirement section, since normally, we list the details verbatim from the game and then offer details of differences in Notes of Walkthrough. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:07, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Just now seeing this... in my experience, the only requirement was completing The Hero's Journey, which requires being Ascended iirc. Though it's been a while. I guess I'll test this on stage with a new character sometime. Konig/talk 18:12, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Both The Hero's Journey and The Hero's Challenge quests can be active at the same time. --Silver Edge 05:36, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Has the Game Been Changed Too Much?[edit]

I originally purchased the Trilogy so I am not one of the players who has Prophesies only. While attempting to complete this mission, I quickly realized it was near next to impossible with my elementalist Azurial Mentalice and her team of heroes to beat. So I asked a guild member for advice and was told to check my hero builds and maybe get some elite skills from Factions. But that is NOT how it is suppose to work? Prophesies has no heroes or elite skills from Factions. So I tried to beat this “as God intended” and frankly, it is impossible to beat without buffing up with heroes and elite skills. So as I said, have the developers raised the bar on this mission or am I just a lame noob who cannot use the core skill set? If it can be beat without outside help I would like to know. --Wendy Black 21:31, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Where are you dying in the quest, and which henchmen are you bringing (and what hero loadouts did you bring the first time)? Easy stuff you might be missing:
  • Hex removal is helpful for this quest, since all the quest enemies rely on hexes to wear you down. In particular, Ether Lord can leave most caster heroes/hench tapped out really quickly if not removed.
  • Mragga uses life stealing. There are a couple protection prayers that can defend against it.
  • Don't worry about Sanyi, she doesn't need to be escorted (iirc, she's invulnerable flagged). Take your time with any Stone Summit she walks through on the way.
  • After arriving at the boss area, step back a bit while the dialogue advances so you aren't surrounded by Mragga Spawn when the battle starts.
It's been a while since I've done this quest but I hope it's mostly correct and helpful. 71.185.203.202 01:58, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
This was about as "endgame" as the content of the original campaign got. As far as I know, no changes have hit any of the mobs in southern shiverpeaks - certainly not any that would make the area more difficult than it was at release. Remember that heroes didn't exist *at all* back then, and everything (yes, everything, including the ring of fire missions and titan quests) was doable with henchman alone. It puts more pressure on the player character to bring a strong build, but it's by no means impossible. If you have even 1 hero in your party, you are infinitely better off than anyone attempting this quest when it was current content. -Auron 04:20, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I was using all my heroes for this mission (no henchman) and I was getting hammered by the Stone Summit, Golems, Pinesoul, Ice Imps and Avicara. I have the elite skill Double Dragon as well. I altered my course south and had to play "cat and mouse" at the iron bridge with the patrols. Once you get past the Stone Summit forces without engaging them it is easy enough to take out the Soul Eater. However I question if the quest is still plausable using the henchmen and skills from the campaign alone? My whole team died as a result we managed to ressurect at a shrine and contiune with death penalty. I am getting mixed signals from guild members in the game since 2008. One member is telling me that with the increase of heroes in the party 3 to 8, skills being modded, overcasting, etc... the game quests have also been changed due to these changes to make them tougher. While yet another member has disagreed saying that I should try various builds and buffs. Some new people to the game have even asked me why the charr seem so much "weaker" in post than they do in the presearing Northlands. --Wendy Black 09:10, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Before Factions was released this was definitely doable with 7 henchies. I haven't tried it "as intended" in 6 years, but you sparked my curiosity and I would be game to try it out. If you still have the Q and don't mind a stranger trudging along let me know. I live in Central Europe and could play after work. Steve1 19:53, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I don't recall any troubles when I did this with my necro MM years ago.. I didn't have heroes at that time. (only change i can think of is to Crippling Anguish). Similarly I'd be happy to try it out. -Chieftain Alex 20:08, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I only had trouble with it on my very first try, after that it was hardly a challenge. I still have my hero builds posted on my page if you need some help with your heroes, for your own build just use what works best for you. Da Mystic Reaper 20:44, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I'm pretty certain that a 5min search on PvXwiki will give her hero builds to her heart's content. But as she wrote: she was looking at an "as intended" approach - no heroes, no non-Prophecies skills. Steve1 20:53, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Ah that's quite easy as an ele, even without elite.

I'm leaving the last 2 skills optional for your secondary attribute and/or an elite skill. Also for henches add both monks, Alesia and Lina, Orion, Dunham, Stefan, Little Thom and Reyna. Da Mystic Reaper 21:09, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Thanks for all the info, since I already did this quest it will be some time before I need to do it again. However I did pick up all henchmen and made the effort to satisfy my curiousity by removing all the skills that were not core or proph. I actually managed to get to the location but we died four times getting there. The fourth death I managed to respawn at the shrine closest to the target area. We had my level 20 wolf and my E/R without her elite factions skill on her. Thanks again! --Wendy Black 06:42, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

The requirements are a little misleading.[edit]

It implies the player has the choice of either using a profession changer or doing one of the profession quests. It should simply state that the player must complete one of the profession quests. This guarantees being able to get The Hero's Challenge. Just because there are some reports of using a profession changer instead, doesn't mean it will work for everyone. My experience.

Also, in the right panel, it should include that this quest is proceeded by The Hero's Journey, even if players are able to do both. Kevin32 (talk) 23:33, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

In the requirements list, second bullet, it refers to the notes section, which further elaborates the requirements. It might warrant a rewrite or rearrangement, but all the important information is there.
As for the second part, I disagree. It would make a lot of sense for them to occur in order, but as it is right now, The Hero's Journey does not technically precede this quest. A note somewhere else on the page might be helpful, though. Blue Totoro 05:09, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
Well, my experience, but I was not able to get this quest after Augury Rock. I had to complete The Hero's Journey first. Kevin32 (talk) 02:07, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
I got them both at the same time. Silver Edge got a screenshot to prove it, too. He posted it on this talk page a couple sections up. Blue Totoro 03:49, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Running ahead and being spoiled is kind of funny[edit]

Even having done this quest twice before, running ahead of Sanyi and getting to the objective point before her and seeing the objective change to "Defeat Sanyi the Soul Eater." is weirdly amusing. VectorSomething (talk) 18:35, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
