Purpose of the document[edit]
This is the Draft of formatting proposal for inclusion to formatting categories as an amendment or as a separate Formatting guideline for specific purpose described in Problem Statement of this document. Author of this proposal is not aware of any contradictions of this proposal to existing proposal of formatting categories or naming guidelines. The purpose of this publication is to gain consensus for treating this document as an official proposal or an amendment to the formatting guidelines and conventions.
Problem Statement[edit]
In some cases an article can belong to many categories. If this happens an Article is tagged with all the categories it may belong too. If article is tagged as belonging to the categories A, B, C and D, currently there is no method to find an answer to a question: "Does this article belong to categories A and B and D at the same time?". While this question may not be relevant for searching information in many categories, it is critical in search for a Guild in Guild Wars. The necessity of this search dictated by the fact that every category particular Guild may belong to is equally important to the person who makes the search. Indeed, due to the time zone, language, play type, etc restrictions which placed virtually by all guilds to their members for the purpose of obtaining their membership, a search must present a match for all eligible criteria. Current categorization of the guilds forces the searcher to go along binary category tree few levels down until search is satisfied and often return to the top level to try another tree root.
Abstract[edit]
For the purposes of satisfying a need described in Problem Statement it is proposed to create a guideline for naming categories that will allow creating categories allowing one step access to the list of articles (namely Guild lists, which also could be applicable to Alliances and alike).
Let's describe first lists of categories that are essential for defining a guild:
- Game version [ GW1 , GW2, ... OR ALL]
- Preferable communication languages [ENG , FRA ..., OR ANY] as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-2_codes listed alphabetically
- Acceptable guild Playing Time Window as a range in UTC (not an actual timezone) [-5 UTC -2 OR ANY] - playing window 3 hours from UTC-5 to UTC-2 as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UTC
- List of Guild Play types [HA ,AB, ... OR ANY ] listed alphabetically - this needs most standardization to exclude ambiguity
- Optional list of countries players must reside in to form a national Guild [AUT , NZL, ...] as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1_alpha-3 listed alphabetically
To create a new category the following format shall be used:
[[Category:Game version Preferable communication languages Acceptable guild Playing Time Window {list of countries players must reside in }]]
All lists forming category name shall always be in the same order shown above.
Example: ENG -5 UTC -3 HA means that English speaking guild is open for players who are in zones from -5 UTC to -3 UTC and play mainly HA
Condition of use:
- All categories created using this convention must be listed under same single category such as "One Stop Guild Shop" ;-) named as per community consensus and allowing one step access to them.
- An explanation or a reference on how categories shall be formed must be included at the top of such page.
- An explanation of a particular category meaning shall be included on particular category page as per current guidlines.
- Since this convention allows explicitly define all the Guild dimensions through a single category, listing a Guild (or an Alliance) under more then one category of this type shall be discouraged as counterproductive.
