His tale:

Rhaegar was the only son to a wealthy merchant in Rin, born 24 years before The Searing. He had not chosen a path for his life until the Charr came and changed everything; suddenly he had to wear heavy armor and train with dangerous weapons to follow his father's desires. Rhaegar will never admit it, but he was relieved when his father was murdered by Grawl in a trip to Fort Ranik.
One day, while being on duty near the Wall, Captain Callahan sent him and a young monk named Lyhandra Dwoe to investigate what the Charr were doing in the North. To their dismay, the Charr had amassed a huge army and were marching towards the Wall as a destructive swarm of hungry beasts. Rhaegar and Lyhandra fled and gave word of this to Captain Callahan, who ordered the retreat and along Prince Rurik planned the counter offensive.
During one the skirmishes, Rhaegar was surrounded by three savage-looking Charr Axe Fiends, who would have made short work of him had not been for Miss Dwoe: she had brought two Vanguard soldiers and was quick casting protective spells to help the unskilled warrior. Feeling a strong sense of gratitude and obligation to his savior, Rhaegar started training hard, hoping to return the favor some day.
Certain events are too minimal to be told, but it is enough to say that Rhaegar disagreed strongly with Prince Rurik in his decision to abandon Ascalon; however, Lyhandra supported the prince and convinced the unwilling warrior to travel across the Shiverpeaks.
