User:LicensedLuny/Core Skin Dyeability
I've been noticing that there is a lot of variation in some of the "core" skins on what versions will and will not dye. I'm starting this page as a list - at first to keep track of the questions ... hopefully in the end, to gather enough data to have a better idea how to advise folks which versions of the same skinned, same named item are and are not dyeable ... or at least get enough data points to ask someone at ANet for an explanation.
So far, the following skins are on my radar for this. I first started thinking about this because of finding collector/crafter items I had which were dyeable when gold versions of the same skin were not dyeable. Eventually, it would be nice to test every collector/crafter skin if dyeablity is at all uncertain. So far, these are ones I've found variations for already.
Please feel free to add a note to the talk page if you have information or know of other skins with such issues. I will keep the notes I've been taking about such things on the talk page here, too.
Skins Tracked on Discussion Page[edit]
Please note, for all the example pictures, I do not mean to imply anything like, "Inscribable versions dye one way, and inherent versions dye another," or "White text versions dye one way, and gold text versions dye another." As you can see for the core/wand skin Air Staff comparison, both inscribable and inherent versions can have the same dye effects. If I can ever figure out or hypothesize a pattern to predict which dye effect an item will have based on it's info tag, icon, or source, I'll try to be very clear about it here. Unless specifically mentioned, please assume that I have no idea how to predict the dye effect without testing yellow dye on the specific item in question.
- Diamond-skin Accursed Icons - Some loot versions of this skin will dye; others will not. There seem to be two different ways the skin might dye.
- Accursed Staffs - There seem to be two ways this skin may dye and the possibility that one may not dye at all.
- Air Staffs:
- Loot versions of the lightning spire skin may or may not dye. So far, I haven't found multiple dye effects. (Dye chart on talk page.)
- Loot versions of the "core/wand/normal" skin always seem to dye. There are two different dye effects. I have found both inherent and inscribable examples of each. Notice there are four, max, gold core/wand skin "Air Staffs" here. Two are inherent; two are inscribable. One of each type will dye where yellow dye matches the default color, and one of each type will dye where yellow dye makes the scrollwork on the shaft greenish. (Dye charts on talk page.)
- Air Wands - I've found only one possible dye effect, yet not all loot drops will dye.
- Bone Staffs - I've found two possible dye effects in addition to some cases which will not dye at all.
- Canes
- Domination req. skin - I've found two possible dye effects. I've yet to find an example which would not dye, but I suspect it's a possibility based on other skins' findings.
- Illusion req. skin - I've found two possible dye effects and cases which wouldn't dye at all.
- Deadly Cestas - I've found two possible dye effects and cases which wouldn't dye at all.
- loop-skin Divine Symbols - So far, the only dyeable versions found came from Prophecies NPCs.
- Earth Scrolls - So far, only certain collector/crafter versions have been found dyeable, but there are two possible effects.
- "core/wand/normal" skin Earth Staffs - There are two different dye effects. I suspect there may be undyeable cases, but I haven't found one yet.
- Earth Wands - I've found only one possible dye effect, yet not all loot drops will dye.
- flame-skin Flame Artifacts - I haven't found a loot version that would dye. There are two dye effects on various versions from NPCs. (Dye charts on talk page.)
- Fire Wands - I've found only one possible dye effect, yet not all loot drops will dye.
- "core/wand/normal" Fire Staffs - There are two different dye effects. I suspect there may be undyeable cases, but I haven't found one yet.
- Foehammers - All loot versions seem to dye the same way. I have heard of a quest reward of this skin which has different effects though.
- Frost Artifacts - So far, only certain collector/crafter versions have been found dyeable, but there are two possible effects. (Dye charts on talk page.)
- Hallowed Idols - So far, I haven't found a loot version that would dye.
- Healing Ankhs - So far, I haven't found a loot version that would open the dye preview window at all.
- Holy Rods - So far, loot versions usually seem to dye. There are some loot versions which will not dye. Of the dyeable versions, there are two different dye effects.
- Holy Staffs - So far, loot versions may or may not dye. I've only found one dye effect.
- "hand" skin Idols - So far, I haven't found a loot version that would dye.
- metal-skin Inscribed Chakrams - So far, I've found loot versions that will and will not dye. There are two different dye effects.
- metal-skin Jeweled Chakrams - So far, I've found loot versions that will and will not dye. There are two different dye effects.
- Wooden and Stone Chakrams - I haven't found loot versions of these that will dye. I don't really expect it's a possibility, but I'll keep an eye out.
- Jeweled Chalices - So far, I've found loot versions that will and will not dye. There are two different dye effects.
- Protective Icons - So far, I haven't found a loot version that would dye.
- Smiting Rods - So far, I've found loot versions that will and will not dye. I've found only one dye effect.
- Smiting Staffs - So far, I've found loot versions always dye, and always dye the same way.
- Storm Artifacts - So far, only certain collector/crafter versions have been found dyeable, but there are two possible effects. (Dye charts on talk page.)
- Truncheons - So far, I've found loot versions that will and will not dye. I've found only one dye effect.
- "core/wand/normal" Water Staffs - There are two different dye effects. I suspect there may be undyeable cases, but I haven't found one yet.
- Water Wands - So far, I've found loot versions that will and will not dye. I've found only one dye effect.
Skins No Longer Tracked on Discussion Page[edit]
- The skin used for Recurve Bows, Composite Bows, and Sturdy Recurve Bows is probably always dyeable on new drops. There are rare cases of older core bow skins which would not dye. My single case of an undyeable "Recurve Bow" could be explained by that glitch, as every recent drop I tested would dye.
Cheers,
Luny
