Gaining XP[edit]

moved from Help:Ask_a_game_question#Gaining_XP

Dear Gamers, My husband and I had a question if the experience system in the game has changed recently. We see no updates to guild wiki in case of it. We have two separate accounts and we are trying to get survivor. I am set as an assassin and my husband a ritulist. We noticed that if we are in a party together my husband is not gaining any experience unless he has a blow that actually hits. since he is trying to work as a healer it means alot of time I am killing stuff and he is not getting any xp because either he was healing me or his blow hadn't landed yet. however if you look on the guild wiki page on experience that doesn't say you have to kill or hit the person to gain experience. In fact on another part when farming xp in factions it talks about using a ruik quest to farm xp and not having to kill anything yourself. Oh and his character was standing right behind my character so he was close to the monster. Thanks Candice and Bill--66.171.113.246 05:10, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

IIRC there was a discussion about this a year or two back. I think Gaile confirmed that it wasn't a bug, but I'm not sure. -- Gordon Ecker 06:34, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
I couldn't find any official comments, but I did find a discussion about it on this talk page on the other wiki explaining how kill credit works. -- Gordon Ecker 06:46, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
The "not having to kill anything yourself" probably refer to Repeatable Quests (quests you can do more than once, so you complete it, take reward, rezone and retake it). Two examples could be Securing Echovald Forest and Securing Echovald Forest, in which your party just have to visit some checkpoints (no need to kill the mobs there) and talk to NPC to accept the reward; it's not needed to have the whole party visit each checkpoint either, so player could flag heroes/henchmen and just stay next to quest NPC. More info about these quests can be found at Fast faction farming article.
From personal experience, I think you do not have to hit the enemies to get XP, but you'll have to be "next" to it when it dies (how "next to it" seems to be a little hard to figure out, though; sometimes I even get XP from monsters killed outside my screen). Playing as Monk I usually don't attack mobs, yet I still get XP. Same happens when I run either Minion Master or Spirit Spammer builds and let the summoned creatures to do the work.
Keep in mind, though, that due to lag, your husband's character might not be as close to the mob as he might think it is (I doubt this would be the case, cause you're using a melee character to kill mobs and he's probably within your aggro range to heal your character, so he should be close to the mob's aggro range as well). --NIN37 14:17, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

I am sorry I mistyped earlier. There is a quest to gain XP in prophecies alot of people use it to help them level faster in pre for the LDoA title. I believe it is called Charr at the Gate. It states that if you take it you can let Ruik kill the eneimies and still gain all the xp by doing nothing. --66.171.113.246 05:06, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Uh? You were talking about going Survivor at Factions and was asking about getting LDoA (Prophecies)? >_<
Well, Prophecies do not have Assassin nor Ritualist. Maybe you're going Ranger and Monk?
If so, there's a chance you killed the mob with a bow (so you would be into the mob's aggro) while your husband was healing you at the opposite side of your aggro bubble (so, approximately two aggro bubbles away from the mob). If this is the case, he might get no XP from it, cause his character was too far away from the killed enemy.
To help low level characters gain a few levels at Pre-Searing, many players take the Charr at the Gate quest, take Prince Rurik (he's a level 10 Warrior) and watch him kill those level 4~5 Charrs. Then go back to the town (DO NOT accept quest reward) and abandon the quest (hit L to see quest log, chose the quest you want to abandon and hit the "abandon" button next to its description). Then repeat the whole process (take the quest, go outside, follow Rurik, watch him kill Charrs, ignore reward, return to town, abandon quest). This can be repeated until your character is level 10 or 11: you get 16 XP from "killing" an enemy 5 levels lower than you, so if you're level 10 and kill a level 5 monster, you'll get 16 XP; half the value if there're two players in your party; you'll get 0 XP once you're level 11 and try killing level 5 enemies.
When doing this quest with someone else, there's no need to both of you to have the quest active (as long as at least one of you have the quest, Rurik will spawn outside Ascalon City and there will be 4x level 4~5 Charrs waiting next to the gate).
Also, AFAIK, there's no way to get both Survivor and Legendary Defender of Ascalon on the same character. You'll either have to leave Pre-Searing to get Survivor (higher level monster are level 10 Charr Bosses at Northern Lands, so you can get up to level 16 with 0 deaths; if you didn't take any quest reward until this point, you could get all them now and get to probably level 17 or level 18. To get LDoA, you will have to get to level 20 before leaving Pre-Searing; only way to level up after level 16 (other than accepting the limited quest rewards) is to let the mob kill your character many times until they get enough XP to level up (so, after they've got a few levels you can kill them to claim your XP); this is called "death-leveling".
If you're going to spend much time on Pre-Searing, you should take a look at PreSearing.com, which has lot of useful info. Best of luck. --NIN37 06:05, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Ouch! Guess I overdid a little and last text ended up a bit too long. :P
In short: low level characters can take Charr at the Gate, let Rurik kill enemies (and get some XP) and abandon the quest. Repeat until get enough levels (I think level 7~8 should be high enough to allow you to kill level 5 monsters yourself, but if you want to spend some more time seeing Rurik dealing with Charrs, you can go up to level 11 by redoing that quest).
There are a few level 5 monsters outside the gate: Rogue Bull, a River Drake and some quest-related ettin are all I can remember of. So you could try to get to level 11 before venturing past the gate.
To get past level 11, you'll have to explore The Northlands (Charr-filled area). Regular mobs are level 7~8 (so you can get to level 14) and bosses are level 10 (so you can get up to level 16). --NIN37 06:42, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't believe they are talking about getting LDoA, I think they are simply talking about the range and mechanics of gaining xp. I do know you need to be within casting range of the foes to gain xp, and quite simply trying to earn survivor this way is going to take you literally forever. Your best bet, (if you don't want to use any of the xp farms listed on Survivor) is to work through the story lines and gain your xp from quest rewards and missions, as well as using the Signet of Capture to gain the 5000 xp per elite skill. The 29 secondary quests available in the Kaineng Center area prior to even doing Vizunah Square will gain you 87,000 xp and about 25 of them can be done in about 2 hrs of just running around killing everything once, and then just talking to the different NPC's. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 07:39, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

actually I was asking why it is you can gain xp with out hitting the creature but my hubby who was playing with me cant gain xp when he is standing right behind me and the creature is in his bubble. I understand what you are saying about lag but we sit right next to each other on laptops and compared it. He was right behind me but wasn't getting xp if his blow didn't hit before the creature died or if he was healing me. so what is behind the game machanic and is it different than in that quest or henchies doing the killing vrs another Player Character--66.171.113.246 03:40, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

OK, I did some tests myself. Seems that Pre-Searing now has some sort of anti-leeching system (no idea when/why it was implemented).
When just one character does all the job (by job I mean attacking/killing), "leecher" will get no XP.
This does not seem happen on Post-Searing.
Not sure about Charr at the Gate (neither of us were eligible for it), but I'm guessing that if both of us had the quest active, there would be no reason for one getting XP while the other doesn't.
Again, a bit off-topic, if you're going for Survivor, Pre-Searing isn't the correct place to do so (you can't get past level 16 or perhaps mid-level 17 unless you death-level).
I had moved this discussion from HELP:GAME to user_talk page cause it had became unnecessarily cluttered plus I had misunderstood Original Poster's question (my bad). Gonna move the relevant discussion back to HELP:GAME article. Sorry for the mess. :( --NIN37 13:16, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I am actually not in pre searing I was using that as an example for gaining xp I am in the beginning part of factions. Do you think that all the beginning areas of the game were set up with an anti lee--66.171.113.246 04:18, 25 October 2008 (UTC)ching system?
