User talk:Curtis Johnson/Mallyx
Mar 2008[edit]
As it stands there are two ways to beat Mallyx:
- Fight through summoning shadows, as some have done brute force.
- Discover what annoys him enough to cast S.S; (besides standing outside the door) and don't do that.
There are no further plans to change the difficulty of this encounter at this time. Curtis Johnson 23:45, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
Mallyx Fixes[edit]
We tried him tonight. He's still spamming it. 5 or 6 times in under a minute. We had an easier time at first, but he seemed to get worse and worse as the fight went on. We easily get him down to 60% but then have a bad time with the Margonites combined with the crazy pulls. I left a response on Mallyx's talk page if you want to continue it there. --Karlos 06:37, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- By the way... May I suggest you join us in-game, see what we do, and then perhaps that may shed some light as to what it is we are doing to make him go hay-wired? You or any other person you recommend. I think something is amiss here. There are those shedding doubt on whether or not we are actually fighting him straight up and so forth and I want you to see first hand and experience it from our stand point. --Karlos 08:22, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, just wondering if Mallyx was intended to be beaten by a balanced team? The only build I have seen beat him since the fix is some sort of zergway using high powered Kurzick skills. It seems to me, that Mallyx was made with weaknesses that only certain team builds can defeat. Does'nt this go against good level design and the stated objectives of balance? If only one or two team builds could win any GvG by design then it would be fixed ASAP. This is just the same, except it's PvE. Surely it would be better for the game if Mallyx could be defeated using a plethora of professions(including assasins) rather than rely on the few in which he is designed to be weak against. The goals of making people move away from the normal tank nuke heal are great, but when they also deny people fun and adaptability in the builds they run or at the expense of well loved characters is the cost of that too high?
- I realise there are greater priorities right now, but if left too long then this mission will be forgotten and remembered as a game design that failed. Just fixing one skill and reducing slightly the damage on another will not assist in people being able to run a varied build and therefore will be a constant source of frustration and unfun for those unlucky enough not to have the right professions. Thanks for reading - Dave. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 90.194.115.125 (talk • contribs) 22:33, 19 August 2007 (UTC).
- "Special builds'?
- Hi all, I just felt the need to respond to the last poster.
- There are no 'specialized' builds to fighting Mallyx in his citadel.
- You can run anything you want to honestly....I run my same PvE bar I've had since I created Chindi...I love bows, what can I say..:)
- Please, don't discourage people from experimenting....it's the thrill of the hunt for Mallyx that is the real FUN!
- Mallyx does not require anything specialized to defeat him....just dodge the big monkey, and knock his life points down.
- And a team of fun-loving players is ALWAYS a plus! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Trub (talk • contribs) 18:13, 20 August 2007 (UTC).Trub 18:22, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Trub

- That can't be true. He is designed to be weak against certain things and immune to others. That by nature excludes certain professions from making any real contribution. I would love for your statement to be right, but please try him again with say no paragons or warriors in the build. Instead include multiple Smite monks, Assasins or Dervishes. If any build will do why is it only one has been shown to kill him? The point is only certain professions can be successful(other than including a single spot for a pity profession), and that is the sad fact. -- Dave. - LOL..I'm sure we could try, but there is a few problems with your request:
- I LOVE my bow rit...she goes where I go..:)
- My Guild Leader plays what he wants to play (Nevah argue with Racthoh)
- The other spots are usually filled by guildies and friends of [SMS], (or as in the last run...complete strangers to me..LOL) wanting to kill stoof?
- Kinda 'Grab whos on' sorta thing.
- We are always experimenting..who knows what the next Mallyx hunt will consist of?

- Wait, aren't you the same person who said on the Guru thread that "squishies go SPLAT at Mallyx"? Which is it? Are you saying you guys can fight and kill him without Save Yourself and TNTF? --Karlos 21:28, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
My threads on GwG always have a humurous (so I had thought oO) 'signature' on the bottom...I beleive you are referring to the "PvE Help(f)ul Hint # 5578: Squishies go 'splat' in DoA! "? P.S....My Rit is very squishie too...:))
Wow...lighten up and have FUN with the game?--Trub 22:03, 20 August 2007 (UTC) EDIT: My apologies Curtis, I don't beleive I can give anymore information here...some folks just don't want it... I will leave for now, with this last bit: Play, play, play the game..if it's fun for you...it is right. PvE Helpful Hint #097: Goren loves twinkies.
Any hope for a change?[edit]
Since our last meeting when you joined our run, I have not heard from you either here or on Mallyx's talk page. I am starting to wonder if the unwritten message here is that you're done working on Mallyx for now and are content with the current design. But I'd like to hear a straight answer from you rather than keep guessing.
The zergway build for beating him now is based on Save Yourselves and TNTF, both of which did not exist when the Mallyx encounter was conceived. I can't buy into the thought that this is by design. That ANet made him unbeatable except by skills that did not exist until 8 months later. Is this on the agenda somewhere? Do you need more time? More tests? --Karlos 00:18, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hm, he wouldn't be too hard without SY or TNTF really, we just take them because well, we can and would be pretty stupid not to. The SY and TNTF really just give a lot more room for messing about and make you practically invulnerable and reach Mallyx without death and just generally make the entire thing a bit easy, but you don't exactly need to have the defense they offer. Really, if we were to go without them it would have meant Trub couldn't run Splinter + Barrage, because that would simply enrage too much. But there's plenty enough of passive defense outside of Save Yourself and TNTF to be able to handle Mallyx and the waves - For the most of it, it's Recovery that rocks Searing Flame Dryders, it's not having enchants that rocks Dream Riders, Defensive Anthem and Wards do quite a number on the Meele guys, Life, Prot Kaolai, Song Restoration, Expel for the hex degen etc.
- This doesn't really change that Save Yourselves is completely absurd though, and doesn't change that Mallyx encounter is generally not balanced for a lot of classes, it generally does gear towards Paragons and Warriors... that said it can apply to most PVE that the type of build we used will dominate it. But really, it wouldn't be that hard without PVE only skills, it would just require a team to actually be careful and to pack probably a bit more defense making it take a bit longer. - This is not Guru, so, enough E-peening and do it. Go ahead, I am actually challenging you. Do it without a single PvE-only skill. And yes, I don't think you can do it. So, put your screenshots where your mouth is. --Karlos 04:17, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- Why the hostility? I was simply making points as to ways it could be done which seem pretty reasonable to me, I've recently just got my monument and don't feel like doing DoA again yet. Sort your attitude out, k, thx. Next time we actually care to try it, whenever that may be, we'll probably try it without the PVE Skills. Yesitsrob 07:02, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- I understand the issue that Mallyx should've been beatable before the introducation of the PvE only skills, as the testing groups were able to accomplish this before the release. However there have been a number of drastic changes that are roughly on par with PvE only skills. If we had access to the original Incoming! and Energizing Finale, the armour cap removed, and the motivation line back to how it was when they were testing the area, my guess would be that Mallyx would be easier to defeat. Simply put, if you ever caught that build on observer mode you could see how broken the paragon class once was. I was in an HA group that used those skills and know firsthand the resiliance provided by pre-balanced paragons. Can we fight Mallyx with the skills that were avaiable to the testers? No, we can't. Instead we have the PvE skills, an armour cap (granted it wasn't in effect when we first did it, but it is now and we've adjusted), a whole 3 seconds tops of Incoming! (half of it's original power), and a motivation line that is considered dead. Which sounds stronger; casters with infinite energy and a party wide 50% reduction of all damage 12/20 seconds, +44 armour (SYG! and WY!) vs. +100 AL for most of the party and 35% reduction in damage 10/20 seconds? --Racthoh 07:25, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- There is no hostility towards you or your achievement, Rob/Racthoh/Trub/... The hostility is towards the attitude that is not conducive to discovering anything. The basic premisis is that Mallyx was beatable from day one with a "variety" of builds in the game. This is the assertion by Curtis (which I still challenge to this day). The whole penis-waving pathetic time-wasting lingo of "We can't try it without a rit cause I like my rit bow" or "Well now Trub won't be able to run Splinter barrage" and all this silliness. Take the penis waving to Guru, and keep the serious productive conversation here.
- There is no one on record who has beaten Mallyx inside the room between December of 06 and July of 07 fighting him fair and square. Now, just for the record, I have done DoA with some VERY good PvP players (I am not a PvP player by any means). Not just HA stars like Red Chamalee and Placebo, but GvG names like Stepn and Slims if you know these names. The mere implication that there was a host of builds ready to defeat Mallyx and that the community including those players could not find them is frankly insulting.
- Keep in mind, you will NEVER be able to replicate the conditions that we fought Mallyx under. You guys are doing the nerfed citadel with the dumber AI of normal mode and the easier "Enraged!" Still, I sincerely doubt you can get to him (let alone beat him) with just Lightbringer's Gaze, Sunspear Rebirth Sig and Lightbringer Signet as your PvE skills.
- Racthoh, I do not buy the argument because Paragons were nerfed to oblivion around January and Mallyx was nerfed twice after that (i.e. presumably tested and beaten by the test team twice more). I frankly believe they have been going around his Summoning Shadows technique to be able to test him head on (the technique you guys "stumbled into" according to Curits) and they have left Summoning Shadows broken on purpose to fight the door trick. i.e. it's a bad fix to a bad design. --Karlos 16:56, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
