Wrong image name dispute

Actually, it was I who deleted that image, so you can get mad with me if you wish. As the first addition of the deletion tag was placed on May 29th, that is beyond the 3 day uncontested limit found in the deletion policy. While there was a revert war regarding the deletion tag, there is no set policy to enforce and thus all following removal and re-addition of the deletion tag was ignored. If there was a discussion on the image's talk page article regarding not deleting the image, as it should have been instead of scattered across two user talk pages, the image would not have been deleted. The deletion policy states, "If you disagree or wish to discuss this page's deletion, please explain why on its talk page." — Gares 18:53, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Well I posted not to delete it on my Talk Page before I save it to my hard drive to re-upload the picture under a different name. I would have added back the delete tag once I got it onto my computer but it was deleted before I even got the chance to :(.--Eloc 00:09, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Help

I have been haveing problems with uploading/using image files, i upload them, but there is no preview, and when i try to stick them on a page, they they show up

tis only a 40kb jpeg

Require some help

Heya gem.

i was looking at this signature thing and the dang thing dont work for me hehe. this is the sig i would like to have " Vega Underdark (talk) " but i have no idea where to put it. looked at "pref's" at nickname but as soon as i want to add a picture nothing works, all i see is exactly what i typed in. You also need to tick the 'Raw signature' checkbox just under the nickname field. :) And don't put the noinclude tags and the insides into the sig. Don't forget that if you're using an image in your signature, the image has to link to your userpage or user-talkpage. Since you're using an image that is in the main namespace, you probably have to re-upload it under User Vega Underdark sig icon.jpg/png. Tried it myself, I think it doesn't like the font tag. When I used <span style="color:gray;">Vega Underdark</span> instead of <font color=gray>Vega Underdark</font> it worked for me. (If you copy this from the edit window, remove the nowiki tags I added) - anja (contribs) 17:14, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Talk pages for deleted pages

should these be deleted to? If so should the ones that get missed be tagged for deletion? for example this one Image talk:Gw009.jpg --Lemming64 11:48, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

It depends on whether the talk page has some information or a useful discussion on it or not. For example a lengthy discussion on the topic of allowing certain types of images would be good to preserve, but talk pages like the one you linked to are 100% unnecessary, as they don't provide any information. -- (gem / talk) 05:51, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Image problems

Hi, I am having problems uploading a new version of an image of my assassin. It keeps showing the old version, and not the new one. Could you help me understand why it is still showing the old version?

It's a known problem with the wiki's overzealous image cache, happens from time to time. Just wait for a bit (from a few minutes up to maybe an hour) and the image will update itself. And yeah, it's annoying. --Dirigible 14:43, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Wolf002

There's nothing in the formatting guide that prevents having a background color. Besides, instead of a revert war you should have taken the issue to the talk page. If the creator of the article doesn't see anything that needs improving, he will ofcourse remove the tag. Learning Wiki and More

Hi Gem. Thanks for getting back to me on my talk page. I really appriciate it. Anyways, I just had a couple of Wiki questions. I am quite new to the whole Wiki deal, got into it after Arena Net added in the whole Help feature. I have made a simple, yet very fun Guild page, but am wanting to expand it, as well as my lackluster User page. Currently, at least on my User page, I am wondering how I can make some sort of, say, table on the right side of my page that will hold my Userboxes in a column there. Appreciation post

Hey Gem, I would like to express my concern about the posts made on gaile's talkpage... If this user is banned on Guru after so many months of attacking all what gaile said, and now he starts here, I think he's laughing at the point where you tell him he will be banned for a few days. This user doesn't care about that, I'm sure.

But that's up to you guys of course, what you do to him, what I don't like is the attention he attracts, he hijacks my post by answering entirely off topic. My post is made for Gaile, not for him. Now Can posts that are out of context and insulting, can they be deleted? My guess is that I'm not allowed to do that he =)

Question about copyright

I'm pretty new here on wiki, but I would like to contribute as much as I can. I used to be a staff member of Gameamp but resigned my positions because of some disagreements about the activity (read inactivity) of the developers on the site. Now me and my guild are mainly focusing on 'high end area's, which we do very often. For example the Urgoz elite mission: I made a full guide on that Urgoz_guide. Now, using the same text as I used in that guide, but inserting foe names according to wiki standards, is that considered copyright or not? Suppose you would like me to transform this guide into a wiki guide, am i allowed to change everything? I mean, I divide the mission in 11 parts where as the uncompleted walk through here only has 11 area's... I would really love to contribute to wiki pages as FoW-UW-Urgoz-DoA area's and such.. You can put any content in the wiki that you have created yourself. Putting it to the wiki will release it with the GFDL license, giving the permission for anyone to use it for commercial purposes, basically meaning that the in game help system can link to it. :) The problem with licenses are related to copying stuff from other places that other people have created, you need to get heir permission for it. -- (gem / talk) 19:18, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

That content specifically looks like a team build, so I think it would have to go under your user space. A walkthrough for a mission article should cater to groups of all varieties, rather than a specific build. Best bet either way is to make it under your name space and then get people to look at it. I haven't received a single e-mail for ages, even after sending one message to ask if anyone is talking about anything anymore. How would I got about making this...

Blocking

A sample blocking form

Blocks are applied via the form at the special page Special:Blockip. There are several steps to applying a block:

1. Specify the IP address or user to be blocked. Enter the IP address to be blocked, or the name of the registered user account to be blocked, in the "User" field of the form. Note that nonexistent usernames can also be blocked, so be certain you have the correct username. You can also block a range of IP addresses; see range blocks (below) for more information.

   Usually, you'll be blocking people from the "Block this user" link in the sidebar or the "Block" link next to the username/IP address in the Special:Recentchanges listing.

2. Specify a duration for the block. You can select a predefined duration from the drop down box labelled "Expiry", or you can enter a custom value, using the GNU standard format, in the "Other time" field. If the duration given is "indefinite", then the block will not expire, although the IP address or user account may still be unblocked by a sysop.

   Fortnights is the coolest option in there. Just so you know. A specific date can be set as well, so using "20071225" will give them back their access as a Christmas present. "Next Thursday," as strange as it sounds, will also work.

   Oh yeah, all those boring ones like "months, days, weeks, minutes, hours, and years" work too. Ugh.

   You can use decimals. Hence, "8.725 Fortnights" is a valid (if strange) block duration.

3. Specify a reason for the block (optional). This reason will be displayed to the blocked user if they attempt to edit a page.

   The more descriptive, the better (especially when using some of the blocking options below). If possible, consider linking to evidence.

Click "block this user" to apply the block. All blocks are recorded in the block log, and all currently active blocks are listed at the list of active blocks.

Blocking options

The blocking page has three important options associated with the block:

1. Block anonymous users only: When blocking an IP user, selecting this option will allow any registered users to continue editing from that address. This option has no effect on a block of a registered user, but it does modify any autoblocks (see below) caused by that block.

   Generally speaking, this isn't a very useful option. Many of the IP users that are blocked are from spammers or spam bots - if they create an account, they'll still be able to access from that location. This option is really only for use when considering a block of a proxy, tor exit node, or dynamic IP address (such as AOL), as it minimizes the likelihood of restricting actual contributors.

2. Prevent account creation: Duh. Anyone that tries to access from the blocked IP address will not be able to create an account.

   This option should generally be turned on when dealing with an IP spammer, since they've been known to create usernames such as "Ki3H5x" to evade blocks. This also works when blocking a registered user - even though we can't see the IP address, the MediaWiki software takes care of it in the background

3. Automatically block the last IP address used by this user, and any subsequent addresses they try to edit from: (Autoblock, for short) This option only applies to blocks of registered user accounts. When enabled, this option will cause the block to also apply to the most recent IP address, and any other addresses that they try to log in from.

   This is the mack daddy of blocking. This is the block for that l33t h4x0r d00d who thinks that he can get around a block by having his mother drive him to the library so that he can vandalize Izzy's page again. This option should usually be set when blocking a registered spammer/spambot, as it has a decent chance of blocking another address or two before they figure it out.

   Autoblocks are taken care of in the background by the MediaWiki software, and last for 24 hours. These blocks only appear on the Special:Ipblocklist page (not in the regular block log) because they are added automatically.

   Be careful when using the autoblock function, especially in the case of dynamic IPs (AOL being the prime example - note to self, add AOL IP checking to AVT) as it can result in temporarily blocking large numbers of innocent users.

Range blocking

Range blocking is a way to block all IP addresses in a certain range. Hence the name.

An IP range takes the form of 69.208.0.0/24 (for reference, that's the range between 69.208.0.0 and 69.208.0.255) - it shows the IP address at the low end of the block (more or less) and the number after the "/" shows the number of significant bits (it makes more sense in binary, take a look at MW:range blocks). In other words, the "69.208.0.0/24" range actually blocks all IP addresses of the form 69.208.0.XXX. Since an IP address consists of 32 bits, a block of "69.208.0.0/32" is exactly the same as blocking "69.208.0.0."

Make sure to check the IP range multiple times before range blocking, due to the massive possibility of error. One useful site is the netmask calculator, which will automatically compute the necessary values to block all addresses between the two you provide.

Please note that individual IP addresses cannot be unblocked from a range block. Any attempts to unblock that IP will not take effect unless the entire range is unblocked.

Effects of a block

Blocked users may still read pages, but they cannot create, edit, or move pages, nor can they upload files. In general, all additional user rights (deletion, protecting, assign user rights) will be disabled for the duration of the block, but this does not apply to block/unblocking abilities. Any user that has blocking and unblocking abilities will be able to use them during their block (which allows them to unblock themselves).

Unblocking

An IP address or registered user account can be unblocked via the list of active blocks. Find the IP address or registered user account you wish to unblock in the list (you can enter the address or name in the "search" field to help you find the entry), and click the "Unblock" link displayed to the right of the block's expiry time.

This will lead you to a confirmation page. Enter the reason for unblocking (optional) in the "reason" field, and click "unblock this address" to remove the block. All unblockings are recorded in the block log.

Deleting

• Don't delete an image you're not sure about. While it's possible to undelete a page, any attempts to bring back an image will only recover the text on the page (usually, a deletion tag =P).

Other useful notes

• The Guild Wars Wiki uses "nofollow" tags on all external links. This means that search engine rankings are not boosted at all by finding a link on this site. Article undeletion and one-click deleting

Hi Gem. Can you please undelete these articles that you just deleted?

• Guild:Guildwar Junkies
• Guild:Nice To Kill
• Guild:The Ministry Of Misfits

They all have too much information to be deleted simply because they're missing a {{guild}} tag and the guild infobox. I'll do that myself as soon as they're available again. Thanks.

Also, I'd like you to reconsider whether you really should be using that one-click deletion script. That extra confirmation page isn't just a pointless hassle; it has an actual purpose... confirming whether you really want something to be deleted or not (e.g. the three articles above). I do realise that you do a lot of deleting, but that's in my eyes another reason why you should keep the confirmation pages, they lower the probability of errors. If you can't spare the time to delete them all without the script, then simply don't, in my opinion; do as many as you can/want to do, and someone else will finish what's left. The confirmation page doesn't add anything to prevent errors as it doesn't show a preview of the article or anything. For me it's just an annoyance, nothing more. What comes to any errors I've possibly made, those should be restricted to articles only which can be reverted. Besides, deleting anything in the 'Pening deletion' category is within the wiki policies. Anything that has had the del tag on it for 3 days uncontested should be deleted. But yeah, I reverted the deletion of those 3 guild pages. -- (gem / talk) 23:55, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
