Our Character

Has very little to say in the story, compared to other characters. I was just wondering if something could be done change that, so that our character is more a part of the story than just a tool to push it along. So that other characters would more often talk WITH him or her as opposed to TO him or her. --Axwind 17:21, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

The reason why we purposefully did not have your characters speak more is because we wanted to let people make up their own character rather than force our idea of your character on you. At least that is what I was told. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 18:01, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
I still love the Oola scene. ^_^ "I'm not afraid of ANY challenge. Let me pack my equipment. I'll show you! Deteriorated? The nerve!" :D User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 19:19, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Axwind, it really sounds like your wanting to push your own idea of the character onto all other people. More interaction with Gwen (you made a story about Gwen to support my claim), our character being more lore-explained (just so you can say that your character did exist in canon lore, instead of might exist in canon lore *I still say our characters are/should be the random adventurers/treasure hunters/bounty hunters/mercenaries/body guards/etc. in GW*), more personality from the character (everyone has their own idea, clearly you have yours, and your wanting all characters to have your idea because you think that'll make it more interesting - ever thought people had their characters as the type that hardly talks? eh?). Overall, I say, stop bugging Linsey about things that the majority of players may not like. :P (I know I am one who wouldn't, especially the gwen stuff) -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 19:45, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
You have no idea what proportion may or may not like this, so don't say anything. More dialogue doesn't necessarily mean it has to define the character. Just adding lines pertinent to the particular scene to make it feel like he or she is there. And as I've said again and again, Azazel, I'm not saying anyone's particular character should be in the lore. I know that's impossible. But just that the placeholder - the faceless, nameless Leader - exists. --Axwind 21:27, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
"is because we wanted to let people make up their own character rather than force our idea of your character on you." seriously, whoever told you that really needs to rethink that kind of comment when taking it beyond say the look of the player's character. Yes, we make a character: how they look, skills, etc and so on, but the idea of the character is forever the same across everyone (bar maybe one or two choices through your first run of Nightfall) when playing PvE. The idea of 'your character' (the PvE storyline 'hero') is forced upon us from the get go: we can't be anything but that character. Player is a tool for the story, at least give us some better lines. 000.00.00.00 00:23, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I think she means in personality, not what the character does. There is a big difference. And through not forcing a personality onto the characters, fan-fictions of how their characters act can be made through more ease without going against the game's depiction of the hero. In fact, even what the character does, to a degree, is up to you. For one, there is the secondary profession. Another is that there are side quests (and even primary stuff) where you can choose between multiple paths. And in Nightfall, some areas change after completion of quests, thus adding onto "who your character is and does." -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 03:43, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
That's true, there is a big difference, yet it doesn't apply here (I already mentioned look, skills etc). The personality of your character with dialogue and cutscene is generic regardless of how you choose to play your character. How can my anti-social nerco become a hero when she herself would want to see 90% of them burn? Personality, doesn't come into it at all. 000.00.00.00 04:04, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Well, role-players usually stay away from the story-line, at least for their personality. From what I've noticed that is. People don't really need to pay attention to the "generic hero" to base their character off of. Everyone makes their own character, not all having to be even taking part in the storyline. Mine, for instance, go in and out of the storyline, switching places with NPCs. To me, I've never done the Ascalon or Shiverpeak missions because my heroes left Ascalon within a year after the Searing. None of them did the Shign Jea or Istan missions either (excluding Consulate Docks), except for one (Dervish did the 2nd and 3rd). That's all my own fan-fiction. To be honest though, even if the cinematics did give the hero a personality aside from "generic hero," people would not limit the cinematic judgement from making their own personalities. I'd say what Linsey was told was just a thought of "How can we make sure Role Players, on a large scale, are not pissed at us with character personality?" "How about just make it a generic hero?" "Good idea!" or something (probably much more thought with no answer except that). -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 05:05, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

And that's fine. Added dialogue for our character doesn't have to define him or her, as I said above. It can still be broad and general. Just something to keep us from being near-mute all the time and make us feel like we're part of what's going on. --Axwind 05:22, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
And as Linsey has said no, this is now flogging a dead horse. Also personally I find it hard to understand what you want Gwen to say to your hero, something along the lines of "Oh hello, aren't you that creepy person who gave me flowers and presents when I was 10 and my mum wasn't about and then took me all over Ascalon with you, while being attacked by monsters? Could you just wait their for a minute while I get you a gift?" *calls police*. Ultimately any relationship the hero had with Gwen in pre-searing was creepy at best and many of us, myself included, didn't bother talking to her, thus if all of a sudden Gwen started talking about their shared history, I would be a wee bit like "huh?". The only way I think they get Gwen to give you personalised chat is through a trophy check of your inventory when you talk to her and if you have the tapestry shred you already get a quest that no one else gets and a wee trip down memory lane. Beyond that I don't think we need anything else. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 11:19, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Salome, not everyone feels about Gwen's backstory the way you do. Plenty of people liked having her around, and from her dialogue in pre, we know she liked following our character. So your comments are baseless. --Axwind 11:54, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Axwind, not everyone feels about Gwen's backstory the way you do. Plenty of people disliked having her around, even though from her dialogue in pre, we know she liked following our character for some creepy reason. So your comments are baseless. Have to agree with Darknecrid on that one. lol -- Salome User salome sig2.png 12:54, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I say it's time we drop the whole Gwen thing, Axwind. This is getting out of hand and will lead no where. Linsey has answered and opinions cannot change no matter how baseless or supported they are. The whole world can love Gwen, and it won't be changed. -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 20:38, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
It wasn't creepy. Our character was closer in age to her than anyone else she knew. Being a raw recruit, with no skills and only basic fighting ability, it's safe to say our character was no older than 18 or so at most. Anywhere from 16-18. 6-8 years difference, as opposed to the dozen or so some people seem to think it is. She had lost her father three years previously, so she was probably a little lonely with no other kids around and only grownups to talk to. So it's no surprise she would latch on to someone she meets who's a little closer to her age. But anyway, I won't say anymore here. I don't want to push this any further. --Axwind 04:49, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Personally, I agree with Axwind on that subject. I found there to be no impropriety in the players relationship with Gwen in Pre-Searing. Keep in mind the whole of Pre-Searing takes place in the afternoon of ONE day. I think that when taken in context of the era represented (it's not the 21st century, that is for sure), it isn't all that unusual for a young child of around 10 or 12 in a very small village with few other children in the area to hang around the young recruits at the nearby city where there are lots of guards, the Prince and King hang are around, etc. Nothing all that weird about it. Although I do think that if we are talking about realism, if a young girl met a new recruit for the first time, hung out with him/her for a couple hours at most and then had giant meteors fall all over her home. Mother killed, tons of the people she knows are killed and she is captured by the brutal Charr who did it. Then she is held as a prisoner of war, treated like a slave and barely makes it out alive after almost a decade. That kind of trauma can cause all kinds of memory loss issues, especially when pertaining to the traumatic event itself (which the player character themselves are part of but only incidentally from Gwen's perspective). A couple hours out of your whole life isn't all that memorable. *shrug* just sayin' I take lore seriously too! ^_^ - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 07:06, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I hope I'm not one who seems to be where the "creepy" and "impropriety" comes from - as when I say enough of the gwen stuff, I mean the player (not character) interests which is, to me at least, creepy. And, with gwen only knowing the "PC" for a short amount of time then having such a traumatizing event, I never even expected Gwen to remember the "PC" at all, let alone for there to be 2 dialogues, 2 quests, and the little reunion in the HoM. Again, I'd love for more character exploration, but not in redoing old content, but new content. I think that would be a better alternative (and much more reasonable for the Live Team, as Linsey said, they (or maybe just she) doesn't want to change the old stuff). The only thing here that bugs me is Axwind's constant bringing this up... Annoyance from a child may win the mother over for the candy bar, but this time it'll lead to a time out. x) -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 07:20, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Just a correction, Az, but it's only one quest. The other is doable by any character, not just a PH. So it doesn't count. Just pointing that out. And I'm not like Karn. This has nothing to do with Gwen herself. It's just as a writer, it always seemed to me that this part of the story just could have been done better. But the path of appeasement was taken instead. Why does changing anything make you uncomfortable, Linsey? Just asking. And there is another part of the story that doesn't seem quite right - when you take her to the underworld to see her mother, neither she nor Sara thanks the character afterward for doing so. It just seems a little odd, is all. --Axwind 11:59, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Maybe it's because they are a company and this is a massive online RPG and even the simplest of changes can have ramifications on other parts of the game, require hours of discussing, planning, networking with other parts of the company, then actually doing it after all that. You really seem to have no clue how a company works and just assume that Linsey can go "yep we're doing this" and then 10 minutes later it's done. She already told you no countless times on changing this type of stuff, and it's really time that could be better spent on the gameplay. GW1's story is over, there's nothing that honestly needs to be changed and all the stuff you've suggested has been an opinionated nitpick that a countless number of people at ArenaNet already thought through, discussed rigorously, and implemented after all that. Changing the lore decisions other people made long ago really isn't something neccessary when you have actual gameplay issues, bugs, and so on that are plaguing the most important part of the game: the gameplay. DarkNecrid 13:33, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Important to you, maybe. Nobody asked you, DN. And how do you know they went over everything I pointed out when they were making the expansion? Were you there? Are you saying they can do no wrong? That they never make mistakes? Stop being such a gameplay fanatic and lay off. --Axwind 14:23, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Ive said it once, I'll say it again. STOP IT axwind. Linsey responded again in a nice way to try and reason with you, however you took the conversation back to wanting the change to the dialogue made. Anymore pestering Linsey about the gwen change and you're getting a ban pure and simple. Topic closed! -- Salome User salome sig2.png 14:41, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm not asking her to do it. I was just wanting to understand a few things, is all. I understand it won't be done. I just wanted to know if the team was aware of certain things like I said above when they made the expansion in the first place. And if they realized when making the Wintersday quest that in the case of a PH, there is someone there with her in the present from her past. That's all. I know it won't be changed. I just wanted to point out what I mentioned here. --Axwind 15:44, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
She has answered that very question, and you have seen her answer here. -- Alaris_sig Alaris 16:33, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Which again Axwind is trying to further your own agenda on this topic. I'm not debating this with you anymore however and for that matter no one else should be. I think we've fed this particular debate long enough and created huge walls of text in doing so. Linsey has said the topic is closed and it is. It will be archived tomorrow and that WILL be the end of it. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 17:12, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm not trying to further anything, Salome. I accept that nothing's going to be changed. Do I have to tell you that a hundred times? It just seems that simple logic goes out the door when crafting a game story, and I just wanted to know why. --Axwind 18:38, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Just because something doesn't follow your idea of "simple logic" doesn't mean it breaks the storyline. This was an issue Team Quest dealt with during development, so I am intimately aware of it having been part of that team. Yes, all sides were represented. I don't mind debating lore since I am a lore goob myself, but you need to be willing to concede that your idea of "simple logic" in this case is not every one's idea of simple logic and there is another side in the debate. Neither side is more right than the other and this time the side you happen to be against won out. Doesn't mean you are wrong about Gwen, but it doesn't mean the games storyline is broken either. The point is that the debate is over, the call has been made, and everyone would like to leave the building but you are insisting that you stay at the podium spouting rhetoric to those few remaining in the auditorium while being told by management that it's closing time and you need to move on. Bah I probably shouldn't have said any about the lore in the first place since it just seems to be reopening that can of worms. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 19:15, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Linsey you were attempting to bring the debate to an amicable end for all parties involved and your response was both informative and insightful. Unfortunately some people have their particular points of view and nothing anyone else says will change them, but you should never be put into a situation where responding on your own talk page in a friendly manner, such as you have done, is not the best option. Which is one of the reason why I have made it clear to axwind that any further posts on this subject from him, will result in a ban as your talk page shouldn't be a place where one is harassed about things. That's what happened to poor Izzy and no wonder he isn't as active on the wiki anymore. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 20:16, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Okay. I'm sorry I dragged this out so much. Thank you for trying to be patient with me, Linsey. I got too carried away with this whole thing, and I apologize. --Axwind 20:22, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I really appreciate your passion for this, Axwind. It shows how much you love the game and I always respect that in people even during disagreements. I really like it that there are people as passionate about my game (it's mine now fools! bwahahahaha Live Team ftw!) as I am, so I hope you know that I really do respect the position you took in this debate. Despite being firm in my decision, I am sorry it didn't work out the way you had hoped, but we can't always get what we want though we try sometimes... ^_^ cheers! - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 21:36, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

quick Q

When does the big April update go live? (with the storage/hom/other things). Im guessing its Thursday 23rd. I only ask as its not stated anywhere, just an indication of the event times. --77.97.23.245 22:30, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

I think it's either the 23rd, the 28th, or the update goes live the 23rd and the content slowly appears afterwords (similar to how Halloween and Wintersday collectors slowly appear instead of all at once). -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 22:33, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

It's probably going to be the 23rd considering under Birthday Celebration Details on the site it says: "The festivities begin on Thursday, April 23 after the live update". Mentioning the update is a little weird for just something that would be flicking the event on, if that is all it would do, I'd personally leave out "after the live update" since it would be a bit wordy. DarkNecrid 11:19, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I just finished looking at the update announcement page, thinking that I'd seen a date someplace, but couldn't find it; thanks for that. =x
That being said, if the date is already announced, why can't that date be restated here? =/ User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 11:25, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
It's more than possible that if for whatever reason the update isn't ready by then, it will probably just flick on the Birthday Event (minigames) etc. It doesn't specify that that will be the date of the 4th Anniversary, just that it is an update of some sort, but that is the most likely time that they would release it (since it's super close to...the 4th anniversary :p). DarkNecrid 11:31, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
But it does state that the Z quests and Menagerie are going to be part of the 4th anniversary celebrations, thus it more than implies a release date for the content to be added. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 14:44, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Here's a stupid question....

I've read about the Menagerie, and I'm really excited for it. Two questions have been plaguing me though, and knowing my disoriented mind I'm bound to confuse something up. First off, the article states that you can unlock "tiers" of pets. If I'm reading this correctly, does this mean we can charm level 20 pets here? If that question is yes, what will be done about pet tamers taking level 20 pets for a sum of gold? The second question is all depending on the first, so if the first question is no, then disregard the second. xD
Thanks. Hopefully that makes sense... --User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 01:41, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't think the second question has been answered yet, however it has been confirmed that level 20 pets will be available in the menagerie. -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 01:48, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Okay. In that case, I'm curious as to if they'll remove the gold payment for giving up level 20 pets. Be interesting to see. --User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 01:50, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

:::my bet is no you will still have to pay to get rid of a lvl20 pet. but i dont think that what ever the price is is that high. also its just one more way for anet to take money out of the game which right now that would be a good thing imo. i didn't realize that they pay you 100g i think that will probably get removed.75.165.119.187 02:37, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

-editing conflict, won't bother correcting IP since he realized that you get paid- With things liek UWSC and keg farming out and about, I don't think they'll worry about the slow method of 100g a pet. Unless they put a pet tamer (that gives cash for level 20s) in the Menagerie, it wouldn't be as effective, by a long shot, and therefore, at least in my opinion, not worth changing. But if they do, no harm no foul for me. But it would be just as effective as going Ranger, capping the Black Moa, selling, rinse and repeat - only 2 groups in comparison to the Menagerie. -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 02:44, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Research on black moa (infinite, easy to charm L20 pet). Zweistein 06:16, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I would assume that the menagerie would have a pet tamer, if it didn't that would be a real pain. If it did, it might be as simple as capping, running 20 feet, turning it in for 100g, and repeating on a different pet without even rezoning. That might actually be fast enough to make it worth it. Maybe. Seriously though, the 100g you got before was meaningless anyway - with the exception of a couple of pets, the effort you went thorugh to level them was worth far far more than 100g. Ashes Of Doom Talk 12:55, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
The "pet tamer" I see coming would be the one to store the pets - which I hope acts differently than a normal pet tamer, so that particular one, hopefully, doesn't give 100g when taking level 20 pets. But if it does, I just see there being three level 20's per tier 7 unlocked for each pet, meaning there would be 93 level 20 pets with 31 different skins and 3 each skin. That would be 9,300g with a lot of running back and forth per visit. :/ -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 15:26, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Not that I will find it utterly ridicoulous to run it 93 timesthey are faster ways to get money). But I think it's better to change the sell/take away my pet to=> Go to Zaishen Menagerie =Sierra Without account=

The pets you charm at the menagerie are supposebly level 5, you have to pay to get them levelled up to the tier/level/evolution that you want. So I don't think there will be any exploits with the menagerie.(marsc 16:31, 23 April 2009 (UTC))

Wiki links can be accessed from the Help panel, however this system works by using the zone, quest or skill's in-game ID number. For example the link for Rata Sum actually opens a page at Game link:Outpost 640, which redirects to the Rata Sum article. Each redirect page needs to be crated. Most of the redirects were created by Mike O'Brien's Wiki Bot around the release of the May 24th, 2007 update, which introduced the game integration links, the remaining redirects have been added manually when they were identified. By the way, the quest ID numbers would also be useful. -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 01:46, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Are the quest id's just the number or are they the text id? I can get that stuff for you guys. We just need the id numbers + what they should link to. Only asking because you're not alone in not knowing how the wiki works here; only a handful of users do. The original Black Moa that you guys are used to fits into Tier 6 (Elder is the same as unevolved), and makes all the lower level and evolution combinations available when previously they were not. If you want a different level 2 evolution, you'll need to purchase it or charm the lvl 12 Black Moas and attempt to train a different evolution into it. On the NPCs in the Menagerie, I've included all kinds of information about the different pets, different evolutions and how to evolve your pets. The information is all done via in-game dialogue though so it's not the kind of cut and dry stuff you'd put on the wiki, but I hope it'll still be clear and informative in the way you folks have been asking for more information on how pets work. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 00:26, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Quest Reward?

Any comment on this detail? If it's Balt/Zkeys, won't that just piss PvP'ers off? --ilr 21:41, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Why would that piss PvPers off o.O? Free money is ftw.I think Balth faction is good because it helps low end/mid level players get UAX faster if it is a good amount, zkeys are great for PvE players trying to PvP, and Gold (mentioned above) will help out the people who only have the PvP Pack getting their guild done. All in all, I like it! DarkNecrid 02:14, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Oh wait, it's answered right above this and it looks like PvP rewards(faction) are still kept completely separate from PvE tasks/quests... except for Zkeys. Enough "Zoins" = a Zkey --ilr 08:10, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
zCoins, though, will be given as a reward for both types of quests, and these can be exchanged for zkeys. So yeah, it's going to piss off PvPers (and anyone else who liked zKeys at high prices). At least they're not giving Sigils out, so HA drops can still be worth something. =/ User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 08:27, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Zkeys were going to go down in price anyways, supply will continue to rise, while now that the tonic cycle is over, demand would decrease. You don't "need" armor in PvP, or anything, the only good thing Zkeys did before was letting people with the PvP only pack do guild stuff, but now that these quests give out Gold, who cares. If you want to look fancy then PvE/use TRP imo. IDK how this is "pissing PvPers off" honestly, I don't think most PvPers care. DarkNecrid 08:41, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
"If you want to look fancy then PvE/use TRP imo" - Let's see, a tormented shield is an exotic pvp reward and takes 300 TRP on its own. With 60 zkeys you could buy a torm shield and still have some left over. The more zkeys decline, the less you'll have left over until this is no longer possible. Furthermore, zkeys can be transferred between accounts and TRP can't. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 09:11, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
And the problem there is....? You might have to play in tournaments to get the skins faster? :O You don't need those skins to do anything except look good, you can either wait longer to get them and play with the default looking stuff, play in tournaments to get Tournament Reward Points or PvE. EDIT: And yes, I'm a PvPer, I find people's complaining they can't get their leetsauce skins so easy to be incredibly silly when they don't affect your ability to PvP at all. DarkNecrid 09:16, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
The tonic cycle would probably be the beginning of the natural decline in zkey price, yes. However, it's annual, so I'm going to go out on a wing here and say that that decline would probably be very, very slow. The supply was relatively constant before, because keys were being used at about the rate at which they were being obtained; they're not like minis, which accumulate. The only increases in supply have been from (1) more people buying accounts for XTH and (2) the two consecutive updates in which players were given more than their usual amount of zkeys, flooding the market. The former cause in price decline wasn't exactly making a noteworthy impact (keys were 5k for quite some time), and the latter was supposed to be a one-time deal ("People got extra, we'll correct it!" "Ups, we gave more people extra. We're going to leave 'well enough' alone now."), and not indicative od any sort of process. Saying that "key prices were going down, anyway, so it's okay to speed up the process" isn't the best of arguments. With this update, keys will see a dramatic increase in supply, and thus a dramatic decrease in price; this has nothing to do with any of the aforementioned factors, and so it isn't wrong to say that this update will, on its own, directly devalue the Zaishen Key.
No, no one needs fancy armor in PvP, or PvE, for that matter. It's just nice to have, in either format. Saying that it's okay to make harder to obtain for one faction because it's unnecessary in that format is fallacious because it's not harder for the other faction, yet equally as unnecessary. Humor me for a bit by looking at another example. There is a portion of players that don't PvP, but want Miniature Ghostly Heroes (these people represent the portion of players that want prestige armor, but don't PvE). The only way these players can obtain Miniature Ghostly Heroes is by selling things that they get in PvE to pay PvPers for them. If the supply of everything that could be obtained in PvE was suddenly increased dramatically, Miniature Ghostly Heroes would be, relatively, much more expensive to PvE players (as the things that they had access to would become, relatively, much less valuable), though they would be just as accessible as always to the PvP players who were getting them through the Victory Chest. It's the same case here, in reverse: Zaishen Keys, the only form of "payment" that was available to many PvPers (There is a 'large portion of the PvP community that doesn't participate in tournaments or win Halls regularly), will decrease in value, making things accessible to the PvE community (relatively) much more expensive to us. The main difference is that the number of PvPers that want prestige armor is a lot larger than the number of PvEers who want Miniature Ghostly Heroes.
This is pissing off these players in the same way that making every mob drop ecto would piss off ecto farmers: their means of gaining money just got shot down just as fast as the supply shot up. User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 09:24, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
It's a good argument, but I still personally find it silly. If you want fancy armor, do the things required to get them. Zkeys probably weren't intended to be a "get rich quick" scheme at all by ArenaNet anyways. You can still get good looking armor over time by the XTH still, it just takes awhile. I used Zkeys this way too, but it doesn't bother me if they go down in price because I will PvE/use TRP to get my armor + weapon skins like you're supposed to. DarkNecrid 09:42, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
It's not a "get rich quick" scheme at all (except in the case of XTH, which is equally as "get rich" to players of either format, and power traders, who will power trade anything with value); it's more of a "you've been doing this, here's something for it" kind of deal, from what I see. In the past, it was, you PvP, you get zkeys (or unlocks, if one hasn't done that); it was just a token for your participation, like drops are for participation in PvE. While that remains the same, the bang for the buck, if you will, will drop, and through no real fault of the affected community. And yes, everyone, PvP and PvE alike, will receive (soon-to-be-depreciated) rewards from the XTH still, it's just that that source of income will deteriorate just as fast as the zkey price, shafting some (the people for whom zkeys had been a major percentage of their income) more than others. You can still get good-looking armor through XTH, it'll just take much longer, especially for those people. Using zkeys to buy prestige items will be rendered largely ineffective, I'd think.
Then there's PvE. There are many, many reasons why a player may not want to PvE. There's the mob team composition, which can be either mind-numbingly easy (the Berserkers in the Norn areas are easy examples) or stupidly broken (Angorodon Bloodspike? Full teams of sword warriors that all hit for 100+ with every attack? DoA mobs? Why would anyone want to endure that?). There's the AI itself, which is griefingly good at some things and painfully bad at others (Watching my whole team of heroes literally get killed from standing in the AoE of Cry of Frustration on LITERALLY EVERY SKILL by a group of Wind Riders with godly reflexes? How could that possibly be fun?). There's the mindless repetition involved to grind the titles required for certain things (After the first 5 SS/LB runs, I think it's safe to say that people are good at it). Whatever a player's reasons for electing not to PvE, those reasons will be equally as valid after this update. The only difference is that one of their other choices will be ruled out.
Lastly, there's TRPs. There are a couple of issues with that. Firstly, there's the amount of RPs necessary to unlock anything. My Dervish wears Vabbian armor, for example. In order to unlock that with RPs, I'd have to first unlock 50 pieces of Basic Armor (at 20 RPs per piece), then cough up another 75 RPs for each piece of Vabbian. We're looking at 1,375 RPs to get a full set of Vabbian armor. That's hundreds of tournament battle wins. And then, if one wanted to dye it anything other than standard colors, they'd still have to buy zkeys at depreciated values. It's a long, long route, but sure! It's still just as viable!
Zaishen Keys were the best way to go about it; what's going to suddenly emerge as more viable now that they've fallen from grace? User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 10:50, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
It'd be nice if something took their place, but why does there need to be something? We went some 3 years without Zkeys so I think we'll be fine. I will agree that the TRP rewards are kinda ridiculous though, and should probably be revaluated. Maybe have you unlock Tiers with the new ZCoins?DarkNecrid 11:25, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
We also went quite a while without the PvP equipment menu, and we were "fine" enough then. We didn't have a XTH for a while, and we were fine enough. There was no Zaishen Menagerie and we were fine enough. It's a long, long list, but I hope it will suffice to say, in a generalization, that regression typically isn't a good thing, regardless of whether or not the affected things existed in the past. User Raine R.gif Raine - talk 12:13, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Not to enter the argument above but on the topic of quest rewards- I think it would be great if (especially for pve chars) you had the option to maybe take a certain ammount of z-coins or whatever the reward and purchase a max weapon mod. This would make it a lot easier to make pvp-able weapons on pve chars and to use pve chars in pvp if one so wished. Underated Skill 12:47, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Excellent posts here Raine and many good points. PvP rewards need a major rework now that zkeys value decreasing rapidly, it's very important imho to have some tradeable valuable rewards that can be obtained EXCLUSIVELY through PvP play. XTH rewarding TRPs was a horrible mistake, as it takes away the value of them from those who deserve them and distributes it freely to everyone. Now PvE zquests producing more zkeys may be a killing blow to their value... In the end pvp players lose.
@DarkNecrid: I must disagree with you, ZKeys WERE actually meant as a way to make pvp players rich, to be a worthy replacement for real world prizes, that was the point of the update that added z-title and monthly tonics.
@Underated: Sorry but thats a bad suggestion. Making a pve char pvp-ready is very cheap and easy, and if its too much for you - use a pvp. Perfect mods are so cheap and common because of HM overfarm (gold items not lootscaled) and Perf salvage making them not leave the game, that adding even more ways to get them would be a complete overkill.--YawgYawg 05:02, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Making it so the NPCs can dynamically change location would be OMG annoyingly hard/time consuming to do, but I have been very much wanting to redo the NPC placements in Guild Halls and Izzy said he wouldn't mind me doing it.
Do you guys think that my placement of NPCs in EotN/NF was generally well done?
Another thing I would LOVE to do is redo all the henchmen in outposts to be more like I did them in EotN where they have little scenes with emotes and stuff. It's been in the back of my head since I did the EotN henchies and people liked it so much. Only problem is that every outpost took me at least 20 minutes for the first pass and up to 30 minutes each for polishing them. "Polish" in this case is making sure that the emote properly loop and don't cut each other off, adjusting facing directions and positioning, making the little scenes match up enough so that if the outpost desyncs the emotes (which happens over time in outposts that don't get a chance to refresh as their are always people in them) the scene still makes sense. Stuff like that is fairly time consuming. With ~150 outposts to do (there are actually more than that), say my first pass on Henchies is PERFECT with no revisions and takes 20 minutes per outpost for hench scenes, add 10 to make sure all the NPCs are in places that don't suck... that is 3750 minutes, 468 work days (assuming 8 hours). Say my NPCs in NF are golden and don't need that extra 10, that is still ~412 work days of moving NPCs for 8 hours straight and it doesn't include any needed polish (which there WILL BE) or bug fixing (remember how the CTC henchies weren't consistently spawning in every dist? Yeah that was my fault, part of this NPC pass) AND it doesn't include any of the 16 guild halls, or numerous PvP outposts. For the 13 EotN OPs, it took me a good solid weekend of ~20 hours to do. Oh yeah and they would all need to be tested by QA to make sure the henchies all still work. So you can see the problem. Of course these numbers are all estimates and sometimes an OP is quicker (although some are a lot longer like Tarnished Haven, that one was beastly to get working right >_<), but at the absolute minimum, every amp will take AT LEAST 10 minutes to open the map, make any changes (even the most minor) verify the changes and check it in. It's a LOT of my time and QA's time to do.
OMG epic wall of response!!! Anyway, I can do selective outposts and Guild Halls quite easily as a weekend project so if you guys gave me a list of the most egregious offenders, I'll try to fit them in. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 22:10, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Boreas Seabed (outpost) is one of this cases. For merchant and storage you have to run from the one to the other end of this large outpost (and often don't see the NPCs at the first glance!) BigBlueUser Big Blue Icon.pngtalk 08:38, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

See the Worlds.com Patent Lawsuit section of Wikipedia's NCsoft article. I'm pretty sure NCsoft will win due to prior art, the patent dates back to 1997, however MMORPGs predate the patent by over a decade, the first graphical MMORPG, the original Neverwinter Nights, was released in 1991, and Meridian 59, the first 3D MMORPG, was released in 1996. As for whether this increased caution is related to the lawsuit, many organizations have policies against commenting on pending or ongoing court cases, and it seems fairly common for lawyers to advise their clients against commenting on them, so you shouldn't be surprised if Linsey can't provide an answer at the moment. -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 06:49, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Ah, makes sense. Thank you for explaining. -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 07:08, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
This is the biggest BS in the world. How vague can you get in a lawsuit? "You can't make an MMORPG because I had the idea first!" McDonald's never sued Wendy's for creating a competing fast-food burger store. How do people seriously think they can get away with crap like this? Its these retarded CEOs who try to fill their pockets at the expense of the consumer that keep our economy in decline. Ugh! Its frustrating. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.pngTalk 08:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
First off, they filed the lawsuit in the [eastern district of Texas], which is legendary for Patent Trolls. Second, the main [patent] in question was filed on the third of August 2000, well after games like Lineage and Ultima Online, much less older ones like Meridian 59. Third, it is pretty much specific to a chat and room system with an unlimited amount of avatars in a room which does not describe Guild Wars which have room limits. If this lawsuit hadn't been filed in east Texas, it'd been thrown out already. --Falseprophet 17:01, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Let's trust in Anet/NcSoft to sort out the legal stuff and all. It's a tough business out there. --Silverleaf Special:Contributions/SilverleafDon't assume, Know! 13:44, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't know what the reasoning behind this licensing stuff was or if it is in any way connected to that lawsuit, but of course I cannot comment on it further. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 17:31, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I guarantee it wasn't connected. And IMO there should probably be a Federal Internal Investigation into whoever GAVE those idiots a Patent for such a broad and general "concept" that it even encompasses MUDs. The whole thing(two Worlds, etc al;) borders on Criminal collusion, leading to big falsified shake-down. --ilr 20:57, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, as long as ANet/NCSoft doesn't get shafted for something so frivolous. IMO, they've created the best MMORPG to date and I hope for more gaming products from them. I hope this lawsuit doesn't damage this company at all. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.pngTalk 00:36, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Account-based Zaishen Quests

Currently the Zaishen Quest Log is done on a per-character basis. Once zcoins are fixed to share between chars in an acount, we will see the following:

  • PvP chars can be created/deleted indefinitely to farm PvP quests all day long.
  • Many will find it too time-consuming to try and do all the quests 7+ times per day, so they'll have to pick and choose. The most efficient will inevitably win out: E.G. for today, choosing Molotov over Blacktide Den.
  • People who stick to one or two mains are out of luck.

I know the previous quest system had no way to do account-based quests, and maybe you balanced the rewards with this kind of limitless grind possibility in mind. I'm just curious to hear whether this is intentional, or rather it isn't and may change in the near future, as I've heard rumors to this effect. FoxBat 22:36, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

We knew it would work this way when designing the objectives and rewards. We tried making these quests restricted on an account basis and ran into way too many issues to make it worth doing. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 23:02, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I had wondered that with the way the quest log stuff is setup. Good to know, thanks for the reply. :) FoxBat 02:13, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion: Take out Zaishen Coins(Copper/Silver/Gold) as an ITEM in your inventory. Instead, use it as a currency and make the immediate conversion(like 1000g converts immediately into 1p), or make it so that even if we exchange say copper for silver at collectors, it enters directly into the currency slot(placed right below the current platinum/gold in status window, it will appear as gold/silver/copper zcoins). This saves space in my character inventory! What's the point of additional storage slot if i cant even deposit items? How many of you have x Gold, y silver and 5 bronze coins on you waiting to get 15 Gold coins for a heavy equipment pack? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:72.136.67.234 (talk).

They're supposed to be able to be placed in storage. They can't due to a bug, Linsey has confirmed that they plan on fixing it early next week. -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 01:57, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Can you trade Heavy Equipment Packs? If so a lot of people aren't going to do these quests once they realize that :P -FireFox User FireFox av.png 07:07, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

(editing conflict)Well the buyable Equipment Pack is at least can be put in storage. And Linsey said the stuff you get from the ZCoin traders are tradeable (on April 9th, in game chat), so I say yes, the Heavy Equipment Pack is. But, until that bug is fixed, it's going to be a while for people to get that pack (let alone a second to sell). :P -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 07:20, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
One thing I was wondering about the PvE Zquests is this. What happens if the quest for the day is for an area that you haven't reached yet? Or for a campaign you don't have? Or do they automatically detect what you can and can't do and give quests based on that? I haven't tried any yet so I was just wondering about that. --Axwind 19:05, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
They certainly do not "detect" what you have or haven't reached. This is an incentive to get your characters further into the campaigns, so you have ready access for any future bounties and missions. Also, you can "store" up to 3 of each type of quest in your quest log for the future, so you can pick the easier ones and keep them on characters until you feel like doing them. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 20:03, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
But what if you get 3 or more daily quests in a row you can't do? Then you'd have to give one of them up. Thus making it even longer to get the big bag. --Axwind 21:23, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
There is plenty of time in the three days to advance your character for most people. For those that can't, remove the farthest quest/lowest reward and get the new one (if it is more doable). I don't see the issue tbh, since soon the ZCoins will be able to go into storages, only your more played characters would really get the bigger ones (and thus, those that are farther in the game would get them). So where is the issue? -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 21:42, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
There isn't one, I just wasn't sure how the whole thing worked, is all. No need to be touchy, Az. --Axwind 23:32, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

(reset indent) Thanks for the info Linsey on why this can be gotten over and over for the pvp quests. I know that was my first thought when I saw the GvG quest the first day. Question: since the PvP quests are basically "repeatable" with PvP characters and we'll be able to do them over and over...can we just make it a repeatable quest? Thanks again for all the great stuff in this update. --The Penalty Of Sin 16:23, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

That would make a lot of sense to make Combat repeatable for the day it's active. This way it's repeatable for both PvP characters and PvE ones. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:45, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm not so sure about Nicholas The Traveler's items

He's collecting bolts of linen. This might not be such a good idea since it will clean out the material traders. People who want to craft armor will be SOL cuz everyone is buying linen for items. I hope this doesnt happen to other materials. --adrin User adrin ecto sig.png 17:27, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Will the prices spike or drop because of this?-- User Vanguard VanguardLogo.pnganguard 17:30, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
If he starts collecting non-craftable rare materials, then we might have a problem. Linen, however, is fairly cheap to obtain 15 (or whatever you need for armor) from artisans, and the associated plant fibers easy to obtain. --Mystisteel 17:36, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Plant fibers are already expensive enough... Next thing you know he'll be collecting rubies and ecto... O_o User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:55, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

The material traders auto restock, people just need to keep checking. --Drakora 19:18, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I believe ANET removed plant fibers and Linen from the traders. All of the Material and Rare Material Traders I've checked don't have said mats anymore, but the sell price for the mats is about the same as it was before I couldn't buy the mats. This is a good way to protect the economy of these mats as far as the Traders are concerned, but it's created huge drop in supply and a high demand for linen at the moment. --User Wizard Bihuq sig.jpg Wizard Bihuq 20:00, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
No, the traders (and all traders have the same thing, so don't look far) are just sold out. if they stay sold out for too long, the demand will have the price go up. remember that Traders only sell players things that they bought from them, they don't have an infinite amount. Similarity, when we where supposed to go kill Kanaxai all the Deep Passage Scrolls got sold out. I think we can expect to see that happen more often thanks to these daily/weekly activities. — Poki#3 My Talk Page :o 20:38, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
It's only for a week. People wanted armor, the price to stabilise, etc., will be inconvenience for only a small period. Such is GW. Having said that, I am surprised he wants materials. Maybe Anet make up these tales Nicholas tells, and naturally look to the most convenient item to tie-in. – josəph 20:50, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Plant fibers should not be that big an issue since the best source of them is Gloom Seeds in the FOW. A few beach clears will provide at least a stack. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 21:35, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

We will remove heroes from PvP when we are confident that it won't hurt people's ability to group up and play PvP. I know it hurts right now, but we need time to make sure we aren't making it worse in a different way by removing them. Making a big sweeping change, like removing Heroes from most PvP formats, requires a lot of consideration, research and discussion before we are willing to do it because of the lasting effect it can have on the game. We really don't want to make that kind of decision rashly or without it's due diligence. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 20:52, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah our current thought on it is that maybe making PvP Henchmen remotely viable will be enough to fill the hole left by heroes without being a problem like Heroes are, but the whole thing is tricky and requires time. The Lost? Great. Kurzick? Cool, they look weird, but still cool. A Tengu mesmer, though? You're nuts! The point of mesmers is to look at them while they kill you!!! Please, not another ugly mesmer! :( Talon is already annoying anough with his constant grunting. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:44, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
er... where does it say that the point of mesmers is to look at them while they kill you? I don't think you'd want to look at this guy or this thing, nay not even this. Mesmer's job is to trick the mind, not with looks but through hypnosis and affecting their feelings (hence many of the skill names). Looks has nothing to do with it. Each continent and race have a different "common personality" that mesmers inhibit, for instant Human Tyrian Mesmers are usually Nobles and Actors, Human Canthan Mesmers are fashion designers and the like, Human Elonian Mesmers are Actors *again*. Of course there are exceptions (Cynn for the common personality of Human Tyrian Elementalists and Gwen for Human Tyrian Mesmers are two such examples). So your reasoning for not having a Tengu Mesmer fails. And I used a Tengu for Mesmer because 1) Many people love Tengu, and 2) Mesmer is something Tengu have, that other commonly liked races do not usually have *Dredge for instance*. -- Azazel The Assassin\talk 07:05, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Account HoM and Raibow Phoenix

Just thought about this. Once the HoM is account-wide, if one of your characters is "People Know Me" or higher, will all the others get a Rainbow Phoenix in the Hall and see the awesome floating Honor statue, or would the statue and the phoenix still be tied to the character that enters, depending on their KOABD rank? And any thoughts on making the phoenix charmable by heroes (at least Pyre, Jin, and Margrid)? If not, may I ask why? Thx. Note to other users: please, don't speculate and repeat rumors/etc to me, that's what makes this page explode with garbage, I would really like for Linsey to answer this once she gets a chance (at least the last part about heroes, the first part I guess I can just wait and see). The reason it doesn't appear when you're in a party is to make the phoenix exclusive to people who have >=10 maxed titles. AFAIK, GW counts heroes as players, so to allow heroes to charm them, you'd have to allow other people without the title to charm them. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 22:26, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
This is why I put my Note there. I already know why it was made to appear only when you are alone, so you are not answering my question, and you cannot answer it, as you do not work there. I don't mean to be rude or anything, please forgive me if it comes across that way, I just don't want this to turn into another wall that Linsey will never read. So, please let her answer whenever she gets a chance. Thanks. The direction of my question was about whether they have given any thought to possibly making it charmable by heroes (as many people who have the title are not primary rangers and want it on their ranger hero instead), or if it's something that's going to stay as it is and they're not considering any changes. How difficult would it be to make a flag in the code (or do whatever it takes) that will prevent the Phoenix from disappearing if you enter with one of the ranger heroes and nobody else? User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 23:05, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
I understand what you mean, you are basically asking is the birdy linked to the main floaty statue completion, which is going account wide, or the KoaBD title, which isn't going account wide and you are right, the only person who can answer that question for you is Linsey. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 23:09, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
The Rainbow Phoenix is based on the KoaBD title, Linsey has already said that title and the way it's earned and functions is not going to be made account based, so I would assume the Rainbow phoenix will continue to only appear to characters who have the required 10 maxed titles. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 23:10, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
Ok, makes sense, but still please let Linsey answer. Mechanics already exist to require the presence of a specific hero for some quests, can the same thing be used to allow the ranger heroes of a rank 2 KOABD character charm the Phoenix? User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 23:14, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
Rose Of Kali, there may be a way around your question with the new Zaishen Menagerie. According to the page it is account wide so you can add a Rainbow Phoenix to it with one character, and come back and train it with other character or heroes. Just a thought. I havent tested this out though.--Jvinniec 22:26, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Strike that comment. The talk page on the Menagerie notes that Lindsey has said this is possible right now as a bug, but the ability to cap Rainbow Phoenix with a Hero in the Menagerie will be removed in a later fix as well as all rainbow phoenix's capped by heroes in the Menagerie. --Jvinniec 23:00, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah lets put a new minipet ingame which is worth 1000ecto so that we cant collect them all just as the other rare minipets. ........................... Still hope they will give us those minipets with the fourth birthday presents. But dont make new rare minipets which are worth 1000ecto or more that is just no fun if you want to complete your HoM. Death Slighertalk: Death Sligher 22:04, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
You shouldn't want to have ALL minipets if you can't afford them, some minis are meant to be very special and valuable rewards and just not available for everyone. You don't *need* them, you just want them. Ofcourse having yet another new mini as a reward for the same thing (rbracing) would not be a good idea, just as releasing old premium minis repacked as 4th birthday series.--YawgYawg 21:28, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
I guess the "need" feeling comes from the promise of GW2 rewards. What happens if one person places a Siege Turtle in their HoM and another person places a mini Kanaxai? Will the first person get some crappy reward and the second person get some amazingly awesome reward, or will they both get the same thing? Nobody knows yet, so folks are assuming the former and panicking about outfitting their HoM with as much content as possible. --Mme. Donelle 00:47, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
