Template:Color[edit]

Seriously, what is your problem? Just because there is no documentation? Then add a documentation instead of tagging a widely used template for deletion just so that your template that is redundant and nowhere used looks better. Also please refrain from making personal attacks, that doesn't help anything but just can get you into problems. poke | talk 22:03, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

My problem... Is I try to help on a publicly editable wiki, make some code which I then use, only for it to get tagged for deletion and I get told to use some code for which there are no instructions as a new user by a supposed GWW Helper!, I assume that is your idea of a friendly community Poke?
Additionally as this is supposedly the official wiki, I am tempted to complain to NC and Arenanet as to your treatment of a community member!
I hereby request an apology... Longshot Hammerhand 22:25, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Complain away. This wiki is hosted by ArenaNet, but run by the community. Did you bother to check how widely used the {{color}} template was (click on What links here)? It is quite literally on thousands of pages. If you wanted documentation on it, you should have written it up instead of trying to reinvent it. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 22:31, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Advice:Move it to your user space, then use find and replace to replace all instances of class-color with User:Longshot Hammerhand/class-color and you win the internet. Misery 22:35, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Misery, I tried for a shorter link since it defaults to Templates/ I would of thought Poke as a wiki designer may of had the sense to allow for local User: based templates to auto show up alongside main ones but nvm Longshot Hammerhand 22:44, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Wynthyst, I am aware of that, and I appologise for tagging it but Poke is supposed to be a GWW Helper, and all I got was 'Your code is useless and I'll mark it for deletion.', rather than oh why have you made identical code... please use this, oh and the instructions are...
I hope everyone can see how I felt, and again I apologise for tagging Color with a delete in response but I am very unhappy and upset at Poke's attitude towards new wiki users.
I had even made the effort to create some instructions for it, thanks a lot Poke!
Oh an Wynthyst please have a look at this User:Longshot_Hammerhand/Sandbox

(edit conflict) Okay, when I saw your question on LordBiro's talk page, I wanted to take a look at the template because Biro is not really active on the wiki atm and I wanted to give you an adequate answer from someone who has a similar knowledge as Biro - as other people here will confirm. What I saw on the template page was really fine, as it fit to the original <prof>-color templates and did the job it should do. However, as I know the template namespace rather good, we already had a template that did exactly that job, had an appropriate (and shorter) name and was already used on multiple pages. So it is just normal, that we would want to keep the old and settled template and don't need a new template for the same job that nobody else knows. I explained that and also gave you a shorter way of what you had as a reason for the template on the template's talk page, and tagged the page for deletion for reasons said above.
That you reacted how you reacted - with a deletion tag on a widely used template and a personal attack - just because there wasn't a description on the template page. So instead of just adding an appropriate description to that existing template page and changing your usage of your own template to the more general template, you were starting some wiki drama about such an unworthy discussion. Sorry, but this is really not the best way to start, expecting friendly comments - even from a friendly community. poke | talk 22:51, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
In which case as I have said above, I once again Publicly apologise Poke,
I did try to find suitable code to use instead of my own but as the Color template didn't at that time have any instructions that was why I created my own version, sorry.
If you have access to the instructions from my deleted version to use on the Color template, then hopefully my typing would of been of some use. Longshot Hammerhand 22:59, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
An apology is not really necessary, nor should you continue in this way. I do understand how you feel, but can we just move on? As you are here longer, you will see that poke is a most excellent resource for coding help, and I'm sure he will be more than willing to assist you if you have difficulties. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 23:03, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Color Usage Instructions[edit]

{{Color|class|xxx}}

Where class is one of the following values:

  • W Warrior
  • R Ranger
  • Mo Monk
  • E Elementalist
  • Me Mesmer
  • N Necromancer
  • A Assassin
  • Rt Ritualist
  • D Dervish
  • P Paragon
  • Any

And xxx is one of the following values:

  • lighter
  • light
  • dark

An alternate set of values that could be used are:

  • tint (same as lighter)
  • background (same as light)
  • border (same as dark)

If either class and/or xxx are not specified, the default values are Any and/or light, although leaving them as the default is discouraged.

Aside from special circumstances, always attempt to use the more appropriate set of color values for xxx - either lighter-light-dark or tint-background-border.

Avoid mixing them up.

Nuff Said[edit]

(Edit conflict again - and now I'm confused of the description you posted; you don't need to post it here within this discussion)
Edit conflict means that while writing others posted already something else - in this case I started writing after Wyn commented and due to lazyness I didn't adjusted it to the later posted comments ;) And yes, your description is still available using the history of the template.
Also a deletion tag doesn't necessarily means that a page really gets deleted so I was basically trying to guide you to the other template we have with the deletion tag (as I mentioned it in the reason). Sorry that I generally don't put in too many emotions in such actions but post them rather neutral (so others can understand it easily too without knowing the background); I just thought that you wouldn't see it so personal. Actually I initially wanted to post a comment on Biro's talk page as his substitute after that but - again due to lazyness - didn't do it, as I thought you would understand alone (I interpreted the fact that you asked Biro in the first place that you knew a bit about the wiki internals already).
Well, I think that we have resolved this now and hope that you won't be too angry about me. If you need any help with wiki code in the future, or are in need of some template we might have, feel free to ask me, and I'll be happy to be a help :) poke | talk 23:17, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Ty Poke, the reason I asked Biro as I was preiously aquainted with him via the 'Unofficial Wiki' I replaced his upkeep icon there to emphasize the white arrow with permission obviously, well I asked him, if you check my username there is CoolWolf,
As for wiki code this is my first attempt, so sorry if I caused any aggro, gotta watch that aggro circle ;^)
As for wiki code, how the hell do you get an image to stay put in a width adjustable table, without screwing the table up or overwriting the text with the icon?
Check User:Longshot_Hammerhand/Characters/Longshot_Hammerhand to see what I mean. Longshot Hammerhand 23:28, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm not quite sure how you want it to look there - do you want the image in the background? If so, you can put the profession icon in the background of an element by adding class="profession-bg Warrior" (or any other profession) to the code definition. poke | talk 23:48, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Ok, eventually got that working, however is there any way to make that class based background image larger?
Obviously without breaking the table it's in, the previous image I was using was 500px but it kept misaligning with absolute positioning or messing up the table, relative or not.
Longshot Hammerhand 13:56, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
The background image is displayed with the largest size and it's not possible to make it bigger that way - the only other way to have background images is using relative positioning. You can see an example here; you can see the two previous revisions for easier examples. poke | talk 14:07, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
