Your RfA
Ya. Since It have been an issue lately, and some of your statements may be interpreted either way, I'd like to ask you if you intend to follow GWW:POLICY as to the cretion of new policies? Backsword 03:40, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
- Not quite sure what you mean there, Backsword. Do you mean do I intend to follow policies to the word, or do I intend to follow new policies? -- Brains12 • Talk • 13:49, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

The reason why i did not sign it course i have a personal thing with bug exploits. And i admit i'm just a real care bear player. i just do not want this game go downstream course of a crappy designt GH feature And i strongly believe i did not want to be banned course i have my complete rep here on the wiki and i complain about this and that it should be fixed and the fact that i even know how to use it worries me in the beginning. With friendly regards. Cult Mephisto

- Not to push you on further, as one of our first small conversations on GW2W was about a potential RfA for you here, but have you considered working something out, RfA or discussion, with bureaucrats/sysops on GW2W to make yourself an admin there, as the communities are near the same, and you were two weeks late on being grandfathered over? Calor (t) 04:04, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- Like there is much to sysop there. Not that I am against his sysophood there, but I wouldn't like a discussion war over why he was promoted without a proper rfa (but there is not yet...) or something. So, I would suggest to wait for the accepted rfa to be there before, even when that might take long... very long... -- Coran Ironclaw 04:55, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- It would be great to be a sysop there too, and being one from the beginning would be even better. But, as Coran says, it would probably be best to leave it and wait until there is a proper RfA process there, and the current sysops have been reconfirmed. -- Brains12 • Talk • 15:59, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

guild page
the "protected page i was talking about is when i wanted to put a picture in the "contact information" box on my guild websit (Mirkwoods Chosen [Elvs] i clicked "edit". i tried to put a pictur in and had one of these: Image:Example.jpg when i clicked on it i could browse which of y screenshots to upload. when i wanted to upload the picture of my sin is said error: page is protected. and the link brought me back to the picture editing guide...... i just want to know how to get my picture next to my name on my guild website
- You were supposed to change the name of the image (i.e. change "example" to "Guild Mirkwoods Chosen cape"). Image:Example.jpg is just an example put in to show that's where the image is supposed to go. Healing Hands
I still think it's valid to put Shielding Hands as a related skill. 50 damage + 20 healing = 30 net dmg; 50 damage - 20 prot = 30 net dmg. Healing for damage received and preventing damage taken is pretty much the same, unless you take less than the full amount. -- Hong 00:16, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Then we should also link all heal skills with themselves because Heal skills heal. - Healing Hands and Shielding Hands are not really similar. The first one is a heal skill the second a prot skill, both do different things. poke | talk 06:28, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- aswell is healing and reduction the same thing, healing for 15 each time u take damage or reducing the damage with 15 each time u take damage doesn't make much differance --Cursed Angel 06:30, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- You can find my reasoning on the revision summary - one is a heal and doesn't affect the amount of damage taken; the other actually reduces the amount of damage taken. They both have very different technicalities and so are not similar, despite that they may have the same net damage taken.-- Brains12 • Talk • 14:52, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

- and, also these 2 (1, 2). Strange, but when I try to revert back changes through history, i don't see any changes there, and when I press main edit button, there isn't any text there... either they use somekind of a bug in mediawiki engine or i just don't know how to revert correctly Kam 01:21, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Curious. I'd suggest copying the text, deleting the page, then recreating the page, and pasting in the good text. Then repeat with the other page. Unless I'm missing something. Calor (t) 01:23, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- The vandal changed the {{guild}} template rather than the page itself, so it replaced the banner at the top of all guild pages. The template's fixed now, and protected, but the wiki'll need some time for the cache to catch up. A quick fix is to hit the edit button, then on your browser's address bar change where it says "edit" to "purge" and hit enter. This will force the wiki to update the cache. - Tanetris 01:25, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Question
Hey, do you know if there is a monobook add-on written by anyone to make the links at the top of RC to act like a filtered RC page? Clicking on New Images, or New Pages, etc gives a new page with a totally different look. — Rappy 18:40, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, I don't think there is. -- Brains12 • Talk • 18:42, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- Erm, ignore this, I was clinking the 'logs' links at the top, changing Mainspace to images works for images, but there doesn't seem to be a link for new pages. — Rappy 18:54, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Cursed Angel is running crazy
Can you do something agains his way of typing: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User_talk:Gaile_Gray#Izzy . Or is it legal to chance his text or delete it? Death Sligher 00:12, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- You shouldn't change or delete it. I'll have a word with him, although I think it was just a (slightly exaggerated) mockery of some of the comments on Izzy's page.-- Brains12 • Talk • 00:16, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) It is kinda disruptive, but you really did the most anyone can do about his typing: Tell him it's nearly impossible read and ask him to change it. I'm pretty sure 1337sp34k isn't a bannable offense.
I suppose you could change it to "Oh my God Izzy fails!!! Nerf vamp gaze immediately" or something, as long as you don't change the meaning. It's considered semi-rude to edit another's posts, except for grammatical fixes, but I'm sure people didn't think of CA when policies were made.Brains is sorting it out, apparently. way to get text back
I was posting on guilds page a new topic about 3min ago, but it was saying there has posted somebody else in your time. I just click on save. Because i was in a hurry but the post wasnt posted. It was along topic..... So where is it ore do i need to typ it again :S:S:S:S:S:S Death Sligher 22:12, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- You'll have to type it again I'm afraid. Out of interest, what's the page called? -- Brains12 • Talk • 22:23, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
"confused since faction" or something like it. I was typing it to say how addictive guildwars is since title system and the HoM. And of people were experiecing the same etc. And that you now play to grind instead for F U N. This is what the topic was about in sort. The real article was 15-30 line's long I think. Death Sligher 22:29, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- When you get an edit conflict because someone edited the page while you were editing, your text is located at the end of the page whereas the text in the upper textfield contains the current text. So if you get an edit conflict you should look above the recent edits and copy your changes back in (from the lower textfield). poke | talk 23:00, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Problems
I do realize that you are an administrator, but due to our recent arguements and unruly discussions on GWW and GW2W I see it best that you no longer contact me unless I am in some way violating the GWW policy (this does not include coming close). I am very sorry that it came to that and although I do appreciate your comments I do not like any type of confrontation. I am doing this because I think it is out of my best interest. If you do not agree that is fine with me and we can disuss this further. Please understand that I do fully respect your position and I also think that you do wonderful work on here, I would just rather you only post something on my talk page if I am violating the GWW policy. Thank You For Your Time --Shadowphoenix
- I will respect your wishes, Shadowphoenix, if that is what you think is best. I apologise if I have angered you, but you should know that I did not intend to. Also, my being an admin should not discourage your contribution in any way, and I hope that any content disputes are dealt with on a user-to-user basis. Thank you for removing those userboxes and for sorting this out in a calm manner. -- Brains12 • Talk • 15:27, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Hey
I don't remember ever actually having any discussion or conversation with you despite all your RC patrolling and adminship which is just crazy. So hi from Down Under ;) --Xasxas256 14:22, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hey there, Xasxas :) My promotion was recent so no worries there. Haven't seen you on the wiki for a while either, so welcome back? -- Brains12 • Talk • 14:25, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah thanks, it's almost impossible now for me to edit this wiki at work which used to be where I did most of my editing from. I've also taken a bit of a break from the game (for the last 3 weeks or so) which probably doesn't help. I've been meaning to get back into wiki editing for a while but it's kinda intimidating and seems like a lot of work.
- Before this wiki started, back on the GWiki, I'd been intending to keep a sort of blog/set of memos/points of interest/whatever type of thing. Just a sort of list of discussion that are currently interesting/important. I don't think I ever had much of an extended layoff when I was active there and I was always a bit scared too. The problem is that even if you a set of policies there's still a lot of undocumented previous examples which I suppose equates to the laws we have in society but we also have bunch of legal precedences too. So even if policy/law has some grey are or things that aren't completely covered there's still our past examples we can go to. Once you spend some time away then you just lose touch, no matter how well you know the policies, how to read between the lines and how they've been enforced in practice is another matter.
- Which is why I wanted to keep that listing, not just for returning sysops, but for anyone who wants to keep abreast of the issues that are important to the wiki. It would also serve as a central historical document so finding this stuff is easier. You can't replace a month or two's RC patrolling by reading a list but at least you could bring yourself up to speed, I wouldn't know where to start now. :/ So yeah anyway there's my story! --Xasxas256 15:02, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds like a great idea, would be handy even for short breaks. I have no idea how and where to start though. :/ - anja 15:18, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the thumbs up, there other advantage is that it would remove some of the inherent chaoticness of the wiki format. Being in Australia I often feel that I would either get the first stab at an issue (because people in other timezones are asleep or whatnot) or I'd see it last (because by the time I'd seen it in the morning, everyone else had already commented). There's nothing wrong with that but because I often edit at quiet times it makes it far easier for me to miss key/hot discussions because when I'm RC patrolling most other people aren't.
- I never actually brought the idea into fruition so I can't really say what would be the best things to document but I guess policy debates (which not so hard to identify), arbitration cases (which are dead easy to spot) and I suppose any discussions where numerous sysops/bcrats/old schoolers are involved. If these types of people feel they need to weigh in then I guess as a general rule it's probably something important. There's lots of very active/heated discussion on skill nerfing and the like but that's not the kind of thing I was intending for this list.
- So not game related things like the best way to complete a mission or other general things like what's the best browser but if it was wiki related and an important/thoroughly debated topic like redoing the mission article layouts from scratch or trying to change our templates for better browser compatibility then that would be worth including.
- I think I'm now writing this down for myself as much as anyone else, tomorrow is the Australia Day holiday, if I'm home I might start it, it's probably too difficult to start in the past, best just to start from the here and now and add topics as they're brought up I suppose. --Xasxas256 15:41, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- I guess you could use the Community portal or GWW:RFC to catch up on some things. Looks like you'll be here for the coming election, so there'll be a lot of discussion you can participate in. Good luck with your project there, hope it comes out as you plan :)-- Brains12 • Talk • 16:10, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

- You don't change the context of a policy without proposing it first (sorry, I thought that was clear). It was left out of the draft for a reason (I'm guessing so it doesn't force anyone with a shortened/easily recognisable verion of a signature to register an account), which you can probably find on the talk page of the draft version. As for the change, it's probably not needed as a policy doesn't have to include something for it to be allowed. -- Brains12 \ Talk 22:56, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Stress-o-meter
Just to let you know, your stress-o-meter on your main page as well as this talk page seems to be centering itself putting the bar and text outside the box. At the moment the only solution I have found is to add <div style="text-align:left"> and </div>
on either side of the Status inclusion. While this does fix the problem it might not be the most effective solution since you'd have to do it to each page you want it on. However another solution I just thought of would be to add the above code onto the actual Status page but I can't be sure it would work since I'd have to save it to check. --Kakarot 15:11, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah I saw there were a few problems with it when I put it up yesterday, but it was getting late and I was tired so I left it thinking I would fix it today. To be honest, I'd rather remove it, it's nothing critical. Thanks for letting me know btw -- Brains12 \ Talk 15:19, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

- On another note, if you want to get rid of that horizontal scrolling, set the width of the div covering the image to 520px (for the white border and safe-keeping in case of odd browsers) instead of 900px. :P — Galil 23:43, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
(Reset indent) To keep the suggestions and opinions going, I just have to say that (IMHO) that blue is too... dunno, too blue? Also, looking at the code on top of this talk page it seems that it was intentional of you to have your "box" on the right side of the TOC, but I would suggest moving it above the TOC instead (still centered though). If you don't have a big enough browser window it doesn't look too good as it is (not that I don't have high enough resolution, I just don't see the point of full screen browser windows in 1600x1200). :P — Galil 18:42, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think I'll change that colour, I'm not really liking it either. And how about limiting the width of the TOC, would that look ok? I didn't really want it below the box because the page gets too lengthy. -- Brains12 \ Talk 18:45, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) It might, though have a look at Guild Wars Wiki:User page/1024x768 and keep in mind 1024x768 is the most common resolution today. I myself have a larger window (about 100 pixels less width than Guild Wars Wiki:User page/1280x1024), though. But yeah, limiting the width would work. :) — Galil 18:54, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
image
is this just a temp bug or is that image on your userpage really no image here on gww? it doesn't link anywhere for me, i.e. i don't even get the typical link cursor. how'd you do it? - Y0_ich_halt 17:00, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- It's part of the coding - I don't really understand how it works, but the
div style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 520px; height:375px;"
is what makes that happen. Took the code from Galil, so you're better off asking him. Btw, that doesn't work for IE (pfft) -- Brains12 \ Talk 17:02, 11 February 2008 (UTC)- lol@ie. and now that you mention it, i know what you mean :) - Y0_ich_halt 17:16, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- Basically, it works by creating a div with non-specified background (thus transparent), with the size of the image (520x375 is slightly bigger, but includes positioning and stuff) and at the location of the image, but since it's created and positioned after the image is, it covers the image itself and thus it also covers the link. The reason you need a div surrounding both the image and this one with
style="position: relative;"
is cause elements with absolute positioning (such as the transparent div) gets their position relative to the closest parent whose position isn't static (default go-with-the-flow positioning), and setting a div's position to relative doesn't screw up it's position one bit unless you add coordinates withleft
,top
,bottom
orright
. ;) — Galil 02:29, 16 February 2008 (UTC)- Ahora en ingles, por favor. Now in English please. For those of us that get out and see sunlight every now and then ;) You're great with coding though, Galil. Calor 02:40, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. ;) I'll try to describe in (even more newbish terms). When you create a
<div>
without any style-attribute specified, it automatically gets some styles set anyway (since if it didn't have a style, it wouldn't have a position, or width, or height, or .. you get the point). One of these CSS-properties (CSS = Cascading Style Sheets, that's what you use in the style-attribute) is position, which tells the browser how to position the element in question, in this case our div. The position-property takes 4 different values.static
: The default. The automatic positioning the browsers do.absolute
: Let's the writer of the CSS give the element absolute coordinates using theleft
-,top
-,bottom
- orright
-properties.relative
: Uses the same properties as absolute, but tells the browser they contain relative coordinates instead. For example, a top of 2px would move the element 2 pixels down, and a top of -2px would move it 2 pixels up.fixed
: Those coordinate-properties are relative to the window's left/top/right/bottom instead of the document's and the element remains in that position even if you scroll.
- Now, no elements that have a position of static can be considered containing blocks, as in: No element will ever have their coordinates relative to them. Any element with another position however becomes a containing block, and any element defined inside such a block with position set to absolute will have those coordinates relative to this element's coordinates instead of the document's. So what does it mean in practise? I'll take an example line by line, with the background image of my userpage.
- Thanks. ;) I'll try to describe in (even more newbish terms). When you create a
- Ahora en ingles, por favor. Now in English please. For those of us that get out and see sunlight every now and then ;) You're great with coding though, Galil. Calor 02:40, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
<div style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100px; height: 100px;"></div> <div style="position: relative;"> [[Image:User Galil page-background.jpg]] <div style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 900px; height: 515px;"></div> </div>
- The first line of this creates a div with it's position set to absolute, meaning absolute positions. This element's containing block is the document, since it isn't defined inside another element with a non-static position. As such, this row would create a div at the top left corner of the document, with a width and height set to 100 pixels, even if you put it at the very end of your document.
- After that, we create another div which has it's position set to relative. Seeing as elements with relative positioning always have their coordinates relative from their own position, and we haven't given the element any coordinates, it will always remain in the exact same spot it would've ended up in if it was a static element. The difference from a static element though, is that this is now a containing block and any absolutely positioned elements inside this one will have their coordinates relative to this element instead of the document.
- If you don't know what the third line does, GTFO. >:(
- The fourth line is where the magic happens. As you may see, this absolutely positioned element is defined inside the relatively positioned div. As such, the relatively positioned div is its containing block. Since we've set both its top and left coordinates to 0px (nothing, niet, nada, null, etc) this element's top left corner will end up in the top left corner of the relatively positioned div (which is also where the image happens to be), with a width and height of 900x515 pixels (the exact same size as my background-image!). Since this element is rendered after the image however (since it appears after the image in the document), it is placed on top of the image, essentially covering it and its link.
- The fifth line just ends the definition of the relatively positioned div.

- Sure. *opens up cellphone* Bauer. Just kidding. The entire wiki is CVU. Calor 02:51, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, like those who are designated as helpers or rc'ers, I thought why not a category of those who look for vandals? Even if this doesn't become a page or offical, I think I'll make a userbox for it anyway. --People of Antioch talk 02:54, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- RC watchers = counter-vandals. Almost all the sysops, me, brains, y0, eloc, and a few others do all three. That's more than enough, as together we cover all day and all questions efficiently. Calor 02:56, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism
Hey Brains is it just me or is user 68.193.113.198 vandalizing multiple pages because I've seen him change things that you are reverting and it also seems he's editing some important pages w/o asking permission to change them -- Ninja Dragon 23:56, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Redirects?
Is it within the bounds and rule of the wiki to make a short-hand of my user name (ie: User:PoA) and make those various pages redirect to my own? I think I saw Eloc do it, but I wasn't sure if I would step on anyone's toes if I did so. Thanks! --People of Antioch talk 23:08, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- The reason User:Eloc is a redirect is because the older version of GWW:SIGN said if signatures that included a shorter version of a user name (i.e. Eloc signs as Eloc, not Eloc Jcg), that name needed to be registered and redirected. I don't really think you should do it for the sole reason of an abbreviation though, so I would say it's best not to. -- Brains12 \ Talk 23:12, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

- If you click the "Edit" link for a section, the summary automatically says

- (Edit conflict x5!!) For example, to get an arrow to this section, it's
/* Editing */ <optional text to appear after the link>
. Though the easiest way would be to just click on the [edit] links on the page instead of edit at the top, and just edit that one section. Then it automagically adds it. ;) To clarify ab.er.rant's comment (that speedy bastard....), you don't necessarily have to click the [edit] links on the page, you can just as well click it at the top and add that code yourself. — Galil 06:23, 20 February 2008 (UTC)- Don't you guys have anything better to do? >.> — Galil 06:24, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

English FTL. English pronounciation has no rules it seems sometimes. It isn't always clear from reading english how it's pronounced. For example "two"... Wth is that "w" doing there? Or "scissors". Wth is that "c" doing there? And what's up with some of the odd sentences? "The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.", or "The insurance was invalid for the invalid.". On the other hand most gramatical rules are quite easy to learn (thank god for a language that only has one prefix for subjects [the] [I was thinking about "a" and "an" so that destroys my point...]). — Galil 06:20, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- go learn japanese. they don't say "i" or "you" (although they have those pronouns), instead they just use names. and, what's best, there's neither conjugation nor declination, i.e. moku stays moku all the time and will never be anything else than a tree. also they pronounce - nearly everything - as it's written (except the "r" thingy...). it's a rather easy language once you can read the symbols and once you understood the basic grammar organization. because except those, there's nothing to learn except vocab. comparing to french:... no. they have even less rules in pronounciation. and if there are any, at least 50% of all words are exceptions. - Y0_ich_halt 20:18, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Heh, I've always found Spanish very easy to learn. Calor 23:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- I actually started studying some japanese a couple of years ago. Dunno why I stopped, but yes, they have very easy grammar. I especially like they way they can turn pretty much any sentence into a question with the only addition of one single word. "Kore wa neko desu." translates into "This is a cat." while "Kore wa neko desu, ka?" translates into "Is this a cat?".
- The hardest part would be their alphabets since they use three of them, excluding romanji, aka "normal" letters, and they mix between these three according to some rules I'm quite unfamiliar with. Not to mention the biggest one (Kanji) is based on the chinese alphabet. :S The other hard part about japanese is that they're so picky with greetings and addressing, and they tend to get offended if you make a mistake. I guess all languages have their caveats though... — Galil 23:39, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- kanji: verbs, nouns and adjectives. hiragana: pre- and suffixes, all japanese words for people who can't read kanji (those explanatory hiragana are called furigana). katakana: words imported from abroad, e.g. "hanbaagaa", which is a hamburger. i can read all of them, except kanji... of course, i know basic kanji like water, TEA (!), money,... ^^ - Y0_ich_halt 16:58, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Unapropiate pagename
Hey Brains since you're a admin/syops/whateveryouare I'd like to point you toward This, it's not exactly the most apropriate topic and its a pointless page(Although it is kind of funny if you look at what category it's under) so I was wondering if you could do something about it.Btw at least theres no picture--The Forsaken One 19:00, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up. It's not the worst thing in the world, so I won't be pressing the matter urgently, but I agree in that it's inappropriate. -- Brains12 \ Talk 19:04, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
