Should we really trust ANet to get it right?[edit]
Many problems stem from ANet's lack of experience with security. They can't tell the difference between harmful third party programs and stuff like texmod - and this is without getting into all the third party programs that aren't harmful (which is most of them). I see the point of your post, but trusting ArenaNet support to get it right is really an exercise in futility - and the only other option you provide is to not contact support at all, even in cases of wrongful bans. Is that how it should be? :/ -Auron 10:23, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Eh, I think I must have phrased the last point poorly. We get two choices: trust Support (and Tier 2, Tier 3, and Gaile escalations) or not. There's no third option to appeal to a court of reason. We don't get to choose whether this is the way things should be. Maybe I need to rephrase — it's not so much that it's always unreasonable to appeal, it's that it's unreasonable to expect to succeed in an appeal; believing that the facts are on one's side isn't relevant.
- Trusting ANet to get it right is the I'm-one-with-the-universe move; expecting them to see things your way is the futile exercise. I'm not arguing that this is a good thing; I am saying that people making appeals shouldn't expect anything better because ANet has all the power in the relationship.
- I also worry about ANet's understanding of security and privacy, but I'm not worried about them telling the difference between texmod and other programs. Assuming we trust Gaile and the (now departing) Emily, ANet has never banned anyone simply for using texmod, a multi-launcher, or keyboard-macro program. According to them, bans only come about when such software is misused (e.g. using a nefarious texmod plug-in). - The funniest thing for me is that I know of examples where people were rightfully banned, then had it reversed on appeal. Getting your ban reversed has more to do with being intelligent, calm and patient than innocence :> Misery 16:14, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes. (Hmmn. It took TEF a gazillion paragraphs, but Misery only needed 15 words to make the same/similar point.) — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:22, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
