This is awesome! I always wondered exactly how big Kaineng City region was if overlayed with Los Angeles. ^_^ --Falconeye (talk) 21:11, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
- Glad you like it, the information was not readily accepted by players on Facebook. Feel free to comment on my talk page. --Wendy Black 22:23, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
- Using your estimates, google-maps, Dervish runner, Destination runs, etc. The route from Ascalon City to Zinn's lair is aprox. 15 miles; about the same distance from Downtown Los Angeles City Hall to the famous Santa Monica Pier. If I rode my *bicycle in Tyria avoiding monsters, and my Dervish ran the real world distance ignoring stop signs, then we should both complete the route in approx. (1:25); which I actually just did with my dervish just now! (*For cyclists in Copenhagen, the average cycling speed is 15.5 km/h (9.6 mph); a fit rider can ride at 40 km/h (25 mph) on flat ground for short periods.)
- What are they most upset about? The math accuracy, or general fandom-whining? If so, you should challenge them to use science to prove/disprove. We could also try asking Joe Kimmes to weigh in on the accuracy of these measurements; perhaps even convince Anet to create an in-universe "Tyrian measurement system", like they did with universal alphabet in GW2. He tends to generally agree with player's in-game observations. --Falconeye (talk) 00:03, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
- Philipp Adelmann suggested using the Voltaic Spear as medium length and Drok's Run for long distance measures. He went on to suggest small sizes could be measured in rolls of parchment. Andy Schmickle wrote: "your scale is way off. Nightfall is estimated at 15,000 sqmi" Then linked this image. If you zoom in on the image the scale shows the Nightfall map to be 122 miles wide. The scale on the map is 350 pixels equals 20 miles or 35 pixels is 2 miles. However this would make the Grand Court of Sebelkah two miles wide and I could run across it in only 33 seconds. Also makes the Garden of Seborhin roughly 10 miles wide. What many people fail to understand is the amazing use of this space. The long runs from Ascalon to Lions Arch is not as direct as it may seem. Also there are many twists and turns from Beacon's Perch to Droknar's Forge. I have no doubt the routes are longer because we don't travel as the crow flies. --Wendy Black 01:02, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
- Using your measurement would place the above GW2 map at 64x10-square miles. Assuming this is the actual world, and not what the NPC's *believe* is the known world: This world is SMALL compared to Earth's 196.9 million mi²! The moon's surface area is about 14.6 million square miles (38 million square kilometers), which is less than the total surface area of the continent of Asia (17.2 million sq mi or 44.5 million sq km).
- I've played Just Cause 2; why is Elona is 6x bigger than the archipelago? Flying a jet at mach 1 from one end to the other felt like forever. I understand Tyria is officially a continent, but it's actually a peninsula of a much larger continent, as shown in GW2.
- Remind Schmickle that Hicham El Guerrouj set the current men's mile run (5,280 feet/1,609.344 metres) world record of 3:43.13; and challenge to scientifically explain how your character(s) can run 2 miles--at x15 Guerrouji's speed, apparently--in 33 seconds? ^_^ --Falconeye (talk) 04:31, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
- A few random bullets:
- There is a Globe of Whispers, which is a large object you can stare at or stand on if you'd like to see Tyria as a whole. Whether this is a true representation I'm sure has been debated elsewhere.
- I'd love to see the relative scaling between the three campaign maps.
- Obviously the world you travel through is a scaled representation of what the lore would have you believe it is (e.g. there are not nearly enough farms to sustain the populations). So keep having fun with this!
