Guild Wars Wiki talk:Formatting/Missions
Videos[edit]
I am currently revisioning (unfinished yet) Gate of Madness mission and found a video under Notes section. It was removed as it has a team build rather balanced group with skill type suggestions and it doesnt even show which are. I really like the idea of a video but there currently is no guideline as to how to accept them and avoid multiple players to compete which one is exposed in the mission page. Please no soundtracks... specially from Naruto (says: a Japanese guy both fan of anime and shinobis). Yoshida Keiji talk 18:46, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think we should add videos unless absolutely necessary to bring a point across. Considering that we can use text and screenshots as much as we like, that's "almost never".
- Any external link introduces potential liability issues, playing into the financial interests of others and hurting feeling when we link the "wrong" site or video. Let's avoid that if possible. Tub 14:30, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
- In the short term, I think it's reasonable to remove nearly any video from mission articles. One big problem about videos is that they are individual efforts, whereas wiki articles are collaborative efforts: once a vid is created, there's no way for other wikians to improve upon it without creating a new video.
- I agree with YK that we should establish a clear guideline for when it makes sense to add a video to an article, especially mission/quest articles.
- Is it difficult to follow the walkthrough without it? (Usually for missions, it's not.)
- Is it to-the-point? Videos should be as short as possible (i.e. only as long as needed to cover the main concept; mish videos should probably be split to show just the critical points).
- Is it useful to the majority of readers?
- Is the quality high (a lot of videos make it difficult to see anything, including important landmarks/orientation; flags; teams used).
- I agree with YK that we should establish a clear guideline for when it makes sense to add a video to an article, especially mission/quest articles.
- In short, the standards for vids should be as high as it is for articles. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:33, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think there was any concensus on this in the end, personally I don't think this should be in the guidelines since the quality is usually garbage + how the heck are we to moderate which ones go up. File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 14:03, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- Because as described below, gather concensus first. Yoshida Keiji talk 14:10, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
more debate by analising an example[edit]
I just found another video linked to Guide_to_farming_Red_Iris_Flowers#Notes I immediatly thought on removing it but then I said...wait a moment...this link is on a Category:Farming... 50 units its a good reason to exist if you ask me.
History page records:
- Revision as of 06:41, 2009 September 6 by Syntic
- Revision as of 22:55, 2011 December 5 by Tennessee Ernie Ford
- Revision as of 23:42, 2011 December 28 by 71.82.60.0

- Revision as of 00:07, 2011 December 29 by Brian Black
- Revision as of 00:12, 2011 December 29 by Farlo
Analisis:
- Revision: Links first video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WELUd7co_wg)
- Revision: the video remains for 2 years, it is removed.
- Revision: another video is added (http://youtu.be/0eAzi-3F7bM)
- Revision: 4 minutes later it was removed.
- Revision: a few minutes later, it was re-added.
- Revision: a sysop's intervention sticks the video, also warning 1RR... it remains until this day.
Observations:[edit]
- Should videos in Guides, stay?
- Commenting on first video:
- Bad image quality, hard to recognise landscape.
- The text dissappears too fast, cannot finish reading.
- I ask myself, if you are looking for items on the ground... why is the focus not zoommed out? Wants to display the cape more than the search for RIFs?
- A wolf and then a skale, follows the player for quite long distance... why not kill it to reduce the barking?
- Lame comments: -"Even get your feet wet"-
- It doesn't show the Mission (U) Map nor world map prior the start to give a first overall pathing route.
- Commenting on second video:
- Text speech engine. Good choice, narration voices from some users are too bad so standarise to the engine would make it fair for every video maker.
- Don't want to hear about your characters nor tips related to other topics out of farming, keep it concise and to the point.
- Leave the NPC guard to deal with the wolf it's a good minor comment.
- Should have text incorporation for those watchers who play at night or quiet places, so that there is subtitle guidance without need of speakers.
- It doesn't show the Mission (U) Map nor world map prior the start to give a first overall pathing route.
- Better image quality and comments are more precise than the previous.
- From the 4 points mentioned by TEF, I take the number 1.Is it difficult to follow the walkthrough without it? Since its newby area, I think what counts is that players can understand how wiki displays info and how gameplay is so that new readers can "familiarise" with content here.
Non of both videos has disturbing background music.

Landmarks?[edit]
Against the Charr has a Landmarks section which is not listed in the guideline. What's the community's opinion about this? Yoshida Keiji talk 12:31, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
- In this case, it doesn't provide any additional information, since the charr camp is already linked from the mission objectives. I don't oppose extra sections where they make sense, but in this case it just doesn't. Be bold and remove it. Tub 13:35, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
- I would move this note to Talk:Against the Charr, since it's not about the guideline, it's about applying the guideline to a specific article. (However, I agree with Tub: it doesn't serve any helpful purpose in that article.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:58, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
- Don't move. I came here first for general formatting concensus. I haven't check all the game's missions yet and dont know if the remaining ones have them too. But I guess I will be able to revision them all unless GW2 is released first before I get to finish the missions project just by myself. Yoshida Keiji talk 23:22, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
