Talk:Inscription/Trivia
Please feel free to add more possibilities as you find them until these are verified. I've used the word "likely" where I feel there is only going to be one possibility, so if you find another, please bump that entry back down to "possibly". --Ari 23:01, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- Since we're only supposed to document facts, sources for these, including probability claims, would be a good thing. Backsword 12:13, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
- Whilst we are documenting facts unless we bug a-net over every single one we can never be 100% certain. However I would say there are times when you get be almost as certain as possible that it was the intention. "Leaf on the Wind" for example is almost definitely from Serenity. --Lemming 20:05, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
- You bring up a good example. You are certain "Leaf..." is inspired by it's use in Firefly. Me, I didn't even remember it had been used there before it was mentioned.
- Not wanting to bug anet (effectivly Emily) is in my option a reason to provide another source. That would reduce the need for confirmation, if anything. In the leaf case, one might point to other Joss Whedon refs as support. But I don't think 'I have a fealing' is enough to base claims on. Backsword 10:29, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
- True, but none the less, some of them are so obvious it is painful. --Lemming 11:04, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

In order to avoid much rage and QQing that is sure to occur...[edit]
Why don't we just ask Emily for a list of inscription trivia so we wouldn't spent countless hours bitching at each other about obscure TV shows, rock bands and rappers? -Auron 10:57, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Ignorance is Bliss[edit]
Has been a saying LOOOONG before the Matrix movie. Dancing Gnome 03:23, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, most of these have. -Auron 08:57, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- That's why it's a "reference" rather than an "origin" of the saying. We're guessing that this is where ANet decided to get it from until Emily has a chance to swing by. If you have an actual origin for the saying, feel free to add it. Someone already did so for GI Joe, for instance. :) --Ari 02:41, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
The 1984 reference is fasle. in the book, it's "Ignorance is Strength", not "Ignorance is Bliss".
- LOL @ who-ever said that Ignorance is Bliss is a reference from 1984 :P--Crazyejackson715 19:54, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Origin[edit]
I think that Origin is going to be blank for alot of these just because alot of these sayings have been around along time. "Strength and Honor" didnt really originate from Warcraft. Its line in Gladiator by Quintus but has been around alot longer that.Ifive 20:28, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- I can confirm that prior to ‘Gladiator’ there has been no official expression like this (Latin or otherwise). That’s not to say that these words have never been uttered in that particular order ;) but as a figure of speech (or salutation) it is entirely the creation of Ridley Scott. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:212.124.247.75 .
- Which Warcraft game was the phrase used in? And you never know, some of the Anet staff worked for Blizzard. - BeX 09:30, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
(possible) additions[edit]
Didn't edit the main page, since I'd love others to verify the following ones:
- Live for Today
- This could be a reference to the quote of Albert Einstein:
- "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning."
- (found that info [here])
- Sheltered by Faith
- Possible a reference to the song Warrior's Return of Nocturnal Rites?
- Riding out in the storm
- Yet the night seemed so calm
- We were hundreds of men
- Side by side
- Still the winds blowing strong
- But sheltered by faith, we rode on,
- on and on
- ([source] for this info)
- Vengeance is mine
- The oldest reference found so far comes from the Bible (Romans 12:19-21), and states:
- Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."
- Information found on [this] page
- Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord."
I apologize for bad formatting, I'm quite new to wiki and still getting a hang on the wiki-code.. Tribio 15:06, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- "Live for today" could also refer to the old "Carpe Diem" (Dead Poets Society anyone?)Zahra 20:37, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- "Carpe Diem" can be translated as "Seize the day", so the thought behind it is the same, yet the words are not.. Tribio 08:56, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Through Thick and Thin[edit]
Probably derived from popular saying again, to stick with someone "through thick and thin" is to stay with them through the best and worst of times. BramStoker (talk, contribs) 00:14, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
- I knew I'd come across the origin of this phrase in the past, so I looked it up. It's surprisingly old. It just interests me (and I hope other people) that there's a slight shift from physical perseverence to today's meaning of help and support. [1]Kalidri 07:06, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Down But Not Out[edit]
Likely a boxing reference: knocked down, but not knocked out. Usually used to imply an opportunity to bounce back fighting again. In general usage, it can mean taking a metaphorical blow/knockback, but still having the ability to come back from adversity again. BramStoker (talk, contribs) 00:14, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Aptitude not Attitude[edit]
Corruption of the saying "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude", by Motivation speaker Zig Ziglar? BramStoker (talk, contribs) 00:21, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
I Am Sorrow[edit]
Credited to Shakespeare, but the line from the Tempest is "I am sorrow for thee." I suspect the reference is really to Ladyhawke where Phillipe asks Isabeau "Are you flesh or are you spirit?" and she replies "I am Sorrow," but it could be either. --Falseprophet 22:35, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I think Ladyhawk is a more probable source in this case.
- I know this isn't the source, and The Bard is much more likely, but did anyone else think "I am disappoint" when seeing this?69.249.223.63 02:48, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Serenity Now[edit]
On the page it quotes the Seinfeld episode, but it's also the name of the well-known guild on WoW that crashed the funeral --71.202.97.206 07:46, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Hail to the King[edit]
I came across this when I was correcting a reference, and am pretty confused by the explanation given. It seems to me that the video game reference (or whatever it was) is very obscure... should it be removed? I mean, "Hail to the King" is a fairly common saying. I could suggest that it's a spin on "Hail to the Chief," but just because there's a coincidence doesn't mean it's intentional, much less the reason the devs came up with the name. -- Vorith (talk•contribs) 01:20, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- Also, on a different subject, I think "Anima sana in corpore sano" is more likely the source of "Soundness of Mind" than the current suggestion. It's not as much of a stretch as the other one, though. -- Vorith (talk•contribs) 01:53, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
Life is pain[edit]
Errr...how come you all missed the most obvious reference, Buddha's supposed quote "Life is pain"? (Also referenced by Steve Vai in the song "Down Deep Into The Pain")--The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:213.89.69.6 (talk).
- It generally helps if you read a page before commenting on it. Backsword 12:37, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Guided by Fate[edit]

Not the face![edit]
Also a rather infamous quote by Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144084/quotes?qt0453388
