Coke Items

Hi Emily! I've just started to go through the preorder/bonus items and try and get them organised, when I've come up against a stumbling block. The only official information I could find on the coke items is here, and Guildwiki only has unofficial translations of the names. I was wondering if you knew what the official names of the items were? AT(talk | contribs) 11:40, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I should be able to find those for you guys providing they had English names (which I assume they do). I'll do some digging and let you know. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:23, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi AT! Here is a list of the Coke item names for you.
  • Scorpion Bow - Bow
  • Storm Ember - Elemental focus
  • Heaven's Arch - Monk focus
  • Bonecrusher - Hammer
  • Quicksilver - Mesmer wand
  • Bronze Guardian - Shield
  • Death's Head - Necromancer's staff
Let me know if you have any other questions. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 17:55, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Heh they got pretty close with the translations on the unofficial then, but not spot on. Cheers for that Emily ;) --Lemming64 18:20, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
It's nice little help that we get from you Emily, thanks a lot! -- Gem (gem / talk) 06:07, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
That's brilliant! Thank you! AT(talk | contribs) 10:03, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Why was this removed? just being overpowered couldn't be the only reason as we have Izzy to balance it. ~ KurdKurdsig.png 20:34, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Stuff like that works in games like WoW where professions don't need to be 100% balanced. However, in a game like GW some stuff needs to be left out. Another example of skills/abilities that wouldn't work in GW are skills that force another players character to move or do something without control (for example 'fear' or 'turn into a sheep' in WoW) and there are probably other good examples. -- Gem (gem / talk) 20:41, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
I think that has something to do with map hacks - if you have the ability to keep something on the map hidden to some users but not to others, eventually there would be a way to get a map hack. But I'm not sure Emily is the right person to ask this kind of question...Erasculio 22:23, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, this isn't the place to talk about this. :) But yeah, a hack would probably be possible, I didn't think about it. -- Gem (gem / talk) 22:26, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I miss the old log in screens. :( - BeX 04:11, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Heal as One

Hey, on your new article on Guild Wars.com, it says Heal as One is a 10 second recharge time on one of those pictures that you can put your mouse overtop of and it pops up the stats. Here on the site, Heal as One is 8 second recharge, which one is right?--§ Eloc § 18:36, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Heya Eloc! The current Heal as One recharge time is 8 seconds, but this change was introduced in our last skill update. Since all of the skill changes in this update are still being evaluated, we won't be updating the skill boxes on the website until the changes are officially confirmed and finalized. Until this time, some of the boxes on the main page may appear to have slight differences. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:52, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks and Trivia Question

Hi Emily! First I just wanted to say thanks for the monster renders. So much detail goes in to each monster, but it is rarely seen in game due to the quickness of the battles. A model viewer would be a godsend to check out the beauty the modelers have given to the game, but this is pretty good. For instance, checking out the Warden of the Tree, I love the "hidden" tattoo it has and how his skin kinda gets a little scaly in places. I remember during the first Halloween I just went around and stared at the creatures that were "friendly" in LA. I think the Necrid Horseman was my favorite (and still is pretty high up there). The friendly Dredge Priest in Sorrow's is also another of my faves because of his markings.

I do have one "trivia" question. Back before Factions was released we were told that the next GW product would be mostly underground. Obviously Factions is not mostly underground, so my question is... was something more like GW:EN (with dungeons and relating to the catecombs and what not) thought of a long time ago, or basically what happened to the "mostly underground." Thanks! :) --Ravious 20:48, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I doubt they will release a modelviewer, but maybe the community could make one,**/points to Granny3D** ~ KurdKurdsig.png 21:06, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Heya Ravious! I'm glad you like the monster renders. I will try to provide them as I have time (since you mentioned that those were your favorites, I'll make those guys the next ones I cap :)) There are a lot of really cool creatures in the game, and you're right...a lot of times details can be missed when you're in game fighting them. Over time, I'm hoping that I can provide a large number of these shots for you guys to enjoy.
As far as your other question goes, I'm honestly not sure what was meant by the statement you're referring to, as I joined the team shortly after Factions was released. Regardless, I can promise that you'll get your share of some really great dungeons when GW:EN gets released (and that's coming from not only a dev's perspective but an avid player's perspective...I personally can't wait to get in them with my own characters. I'm honestly psyched.) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:31, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Kurd, I would be fine with an ingame model viewer...say via the Hall of Monuments. *hint, hint*. THanks for the Shaman, Emily, the snazzy runed'up guy is now also living on my page. :)
I have no doubt GWEN is going to rock the socks off this awesome game. My theory is kind of irrelevant to what is going to happen. I just swear I remember back when GW was first being released, and the next buyable update was slated for 6 months, they said the next campaign would be mostly underground. Coupled with the Gwen (character) artifacts in Prophecies, Sarah in the UW, and cliffhangers all across Tyria... I just am saying that Prophecies has a ton more unanswered questions than probably both other campaigns combined.  ;) --Ravious 17:59, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Emily, I do have one more creature render request. Could you do the Envoys, please? They are so hard to see sometimes, but their models are pretty cool (especially the one that looks like the Lady of Pain. Cya. --Ravious 20:30, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Sure can! Envoys are some of my favorite NPCs in Factions too. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:32, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Creature species...

Hi Emily. Would it be possible to get insider input from ArenaNet on some of the issues concerning creature species? You can read Talk:Species for some of the issues with a couple of proposals at the bottom.

A few issues that we can use insider help on are:

  1. The spcies anomalies (like Explosive Growths triggering EoE on Urgoz, a plant, but not being hexable with a message that says they are spirits).
  2. Some interlinking between campaigns... For example, are the Maguuma Spiders also of the arch-species Insect like Elonian Spiders or are they their own thing? We have no way to test with EoE or Disease or weapons of Insect-Slaying.

Can somoene inside answer some of these questions? Thanks. --Karlos 10:57, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Have you seen this yet? - BeX 10:59, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
This only confirms what we already knew. I mean, think about it, I figured that out (that Carven Effigies are elementals by species and undead by affiliation) without going back to the Devs. I am more interested in the specific requests I asked for. Can we ask the Devs specific questions like "Are Maguuma Spiders, Armored Cave Spiders and Stalking Nephlia the same species?" as well as "What the heck is wrong with Explosive Growths?" It would be great if they can resolve such conflicts. --Karlos 19:33, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi Karlos. I've checked about the two questions you've brought up, and foud that:
The Explosive Growths are classified as plants, although they will behave like plant spirits. I'd probably put them under plants despite the seeming anomaly, because there are no plans to change the way they behave.
All the spiders that you have listed are classified as insects, so for purposes of the wiki I'd probably put them under that category.
I hope this helps. If you guys have additional specific questions about what species a creature falls into, let me know. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:09, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Design-a-Weapon (2005)

Hi Emily, could you confirm which weapon this winning entry was? [1] We think it may be the Wayward Wand, though they are not identical. --Lemming64 14:03, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Hiya Lemming! Yes, this is the Wayward Ward (which, ironically, is the same wand my necro is using right now) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:47, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Cool thanks Emily! Though I am not sure how that is ironic? :P have you been listening to Alanis Morissette? Coincidently maybe :) --Lemming64 22:58, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Heh. The only thing ironic about that song is that nothing in it is ironic =P And yes, it's more of a mild coincidence XP MisterPepe talk 22:59, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Question about your User Page

Emily, I'm busy contructing my user page now that I've moved over here from GuildWiki, and I was wondering if I could use your tabs idea on my user page. I know that tabs thing comes from mediawiki - but I saw it on your user page and liked it. Could I sort of steal the idea if I give you credit? Thanks. Kami No Kei 13:51, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing :) I don't mind at all! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 17:21, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Regarding your user page

How do you get that nifty "Userboxes are fun" thing on your user page? I clicked "edit" just to see what code it takes, but it looks like there's code missing from it. What would I have to do to get a similar box-thingy on my user page? --T-Lo 02:32, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Her page is well organised, with great modules. Part of the code is on the main page, you can check the rest on User:Emily_Diehl/User_boxes_box (Edit mode)
I like this page, and if you are interessed in improvement, I've upgrade tabs system to be "copy/paste"-able for every user on my page. Check User:M'vy/Works and don't be affraid to feedback -- M'vy | user | talk | -- 13:39, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

User talk:Ryan Scott

Hey Emily, can you ask Ryan if it's ok for us to archive his talkpage? He hasn't contributed to the wiki for over 2 weeks and his talkpage is >200KBs. This poses problems for people using IE. Another thing is that it is quite a shame that there is no update on the status of the Gladiator Title track changes, the prime reason for him to create the talk page on the wiki AFAIK. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 11:15, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

I'd say go ahead and archive for him. Also, as far as updating the wiki with Glad changes goes, you guys have to keep in mind that everyone is really busy with post-launch GW:EN stuff, as well as many other things. (In fact, I think I've somehow managed to get busier than before ship, although I'm not sure how that happened). I know it's NOT his intent to seem to ignore the changes, and I know he is currently working on them in between his bug fixes and other tasks. Additionally, I know that the comments and discussions held on that page have been really helpful to the team as a whole. It's just not the easiest thing to juggle updating talk pages and responding to all comments there when everyone is in large meetings a majority of the day and working diligently on critical tasks the rest :)
Hopefully things will reach a level point soon and you'll see our wiki involvement get back to a normal level again :) Until then, be patient with us and remember that if we're not responding to things here it's because we're working to make GW2 as awesome as it can possibly be. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:15, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your response Emily, and I want to say that I had no intention of wanting to sound impatient with my remark. I know you all are still busy with wrap-ups for the release of GW:EN, and I'll just wait until something will be revealed on this subject. It's just that I loved the way feedback was asked from the community and then all of a sudden nothing was said anymore by Ryan Scott on the subject, like the feedback was no longer needed. But your response to this question helps a lot. Thank you. -- CoRrRan (CoRrRan / talk) 19:17, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Oh, no worries! I just figured that people may think that we're in a state of downtime since we released GW:EN, so I wanted to confirm that this is about as far from the truth that you can get :) We're all still here reading and participating when we can, but time's just been really scarce for a lot of us lately. Since launch, I've personally been getting in around 8 - 9 in the morning, leaving at 8+ at night, and generally doing work from home until nearly midnight, and I know others are just as crazy as I am :) Lucky for me, I was able to use the extended weekend to play through the main storyline of GW:EN, so I haven't had GW withdrawals just yet :-p --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:32, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Quick question for GW

What programming language is Guild Wars writtin in? I'd like to learn w/e language it's in. I'm assuming C++?--§ Eloc § 16:01, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes it's coded in C++--81.51.151.222 18:09, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Coding

So GuildWars is made of C++ or what?--§ Eloc § 15:57, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah--86.213.187.192 18:23, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I'd rather hear it from Emily to confirm this, not some IP adress.--§ Eloc § 22:51, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Lol well I am by no means an expert on coding and games but what I do know is that GW runs on its on custom Game Engine. They most likely run a few different types of coding to keep everything going solid, but I guess yes somewhere in there would be some form of C++.Valorum Dynamo 22:59, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
The question was asked in one of the archives as well, I believe, and the answer there was also C++. --User Jioruji Derako logo.png Ĵĩôřũĵĩ Đēŗāķō.>.cнаt^ 23:02, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, that was me that asked the question and I got answered by an IP adress. I want to hear is straight from Emily (or even Gaile), that it's programmed in C++ or if not, I want to know what it's programmed in.--§ Eloc § 23:06, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
LOL! That is all I have to say. I can't even describe how stupid it is to ask this. There are(and correct me if I'm wrong) probably a dozen or so rules that prevent Emily from dicussing what Guild Wars runs with/is coded with. So... just...forget you asked. - UserDrago-sig.gif Drago 23:10, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Eloc; did you read the login announcement that asked for C++ programmers? That might just be a hint. Unless they were looking for C++ programmers to learn another language to code with... -Auron 23:12, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Once you know one language you can pick up another one pretty quickly, they are essentially all similar but with different structures etc. The key is to learning one well and demonstrating that skill. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 23:45, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that Anet wasn't asking for C++ programmers just so they could learn a different language before coding... -Auron 23:48, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Sorry I should have explained better, what I meant was I think Eloc is asking is that he wants to learn the code GW is written in so he can get a job in gaming one day. I think he mentioned that previously. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 23:51, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

(Reset indent) It's actually one of my userboxes lol.

A-Net This user wishes to one day work for Arena-Net

. I just want to make sure what to learn so that I have atleast a chance of working at Arena-Net one day. Currently I'm taking C++ as my school offers it.--§ Eloc § 20:36, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Practically all installable modern games are programmed in C++. The most popular language for games these days is actually Flash, as far as I can tell -- the casual and web-based gaming market is huge, and not to be ignored. In any case, don't learn C++ as your first language unless you're a genius -- you're likely to get pissed off and quit. I've been using C++ for 8 years now, and I'm still surprised by it every time I write something new in it.
For the record, I'm a Flash game programmer. :)
Tanaric 06:12, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Well, the only other coding I know is AutoHotKey. Besides, in 11 years of taking Computer classes, I've never gotten below an 80% :P. And I earn credits towards my graduation while doing it.--§ Eloc § 14:22, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Arachni's Haunt

The other day, I was in Arachni's Haunt, and noticed a door, with an area not on the map behind it. I had a limited view with the | button, and I didn't have Light of Deldrimor on me. I don't have the skill to Texmod the door to invisibility, so I was just left to wonder. Sure enough, this thread confirms that there is a massive secret area behind the door, accessible with Light of Deldrimor. However, it seems that area has now been sealed off, which is a real shame.

I'd like to request that this wonderful little easter egg is opened up again, even if it's not there intentionally, it's (reportedly) a beautiful little area, and I'd love to go down there to have a little look around. Thanks, Santax (talk · contribs) 15:41, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

As of a few days ago, it still was open. Bring light of deldrimor: There is a secret switch that opens the door. --Xeeron 16:23, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Did the Haunt last night, I can confirm it's now closed off. Never got to see it either *sniff* --NieA7 16:29, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Did they take away the secret switch, or does the switch not open the door anymore? And you are right: Its a shame to close it off, that was pure eye candy and fun to explore. --Xeeron 16:42, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
You can open the switch, go through, but then after the first room there's just a wall. --Santax (talk · contribs) 19:12, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Awww. I wish I had taken more screenshots then. --Xeeron 19:48, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
There was something similar in another dungeon, I forget which one. You could walk through a wall and wonder around a big room just like the one you fight Duncan in, but it wasn't on the map. I'm guessing they were test areas. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 20:45, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
And in Ooze Pit, there's an area filled with Albino Rats, but no way in. Didn't try Light of Deldrimor there, but I don't think there's a way in at that point... doesn't seem to be anything else in the area, either. --User Jioruji Derako logo.png Ĵĩôřũĵĩ Đēŗāķō.>.cнаt^ 03:19, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh, any info on the wiki lag problems would be great, but no hurry if it's a bad time. :) -- Gem (gem / talk) 19:30, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Aww, thanks guys! This was so sweet to read :) I swear, half of the team is out sick yet again with a horrible chest cold (fever/coughs/congestion/weakness/etc) and a lot of others (like me) are just kinda straggling around miserable. This usually happens 2 to 3 times a year. Someone gets sick and comes in anyways, and then the plague sweeps through the office super fast and keeps hitting teams over and over again until pretty much everyone has been sick at least once. I don't know how our studio manages to trap germs like it does, but it sucks. I'm medicated and wrapped up in a fuzzy skeleton blanket with my tea and cough drops trying to hide from people and get work done. With all luck I can get caught up on a bunch of stuff for you guys since everyone else being out too hurts my normal workflow. Kinda hard to have design meetings when half of the designers are out sick :) Thanks for the well-wishes! And give Lins some love because she's out sick again today too. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:35, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
If they're all suffering from weakness, they can only get 1/3 of the work done, and even then all their skills are reduced :( --Maestro Ed 19:48, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
That's sad to hear. :( Epidemics like these tend to break out now and then, but 2-3 times a year. woah... I wish you all the best and hope you get well soon. -- Gem (gem / talk) 19:49, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Australia

An Australian player reported about problems that some Australians players are having with GW here. I just thought I'd throw you a notice since I'm sure none of the ANet staff memebers watch that page and the player seems to think that you guys might have a chance to solve the issue. (and they can't report to support due to the same problem) -- Gem (gem / talk) 08:06, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Gem! It looks like Gaile has responded to the topic, so hopefully a resolution is reached. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 02:21, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

ANet at LinkedIn?

I guess none of your team members can be found at http://www.linkedin.com/. I've spotted some NCsoft Europe guys through my own network, but couldn't find anyone from ArenaNet even through the search tool. You might want to spread the word as there migh be people interested in something like this. The website is basically a tool to maintain and build your social network consisting of former class mates, colleagues and so forth. It's also nice for offering/searching for jobs, although that will probably be pretty useless to you guys since you are all so passionate about GW. ;) -- Gem (gem / talk) 01:58, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

I doubt people on the team would really like that kind of site, so I don't really feel comfortable trying to recruit people into trying it out :( For the most part, it seems that a lot of people (me included) tend to stay away from anything of those networking things. Thanks for the suggestion though! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:46, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
I didn't mean you should go 'recruit' anyone, I just thought that someone might be interested in it. And no, I wasn't looking to get people into my network since I don't really know any of you guys that well. :) -- Gem (gem / talk) 19:23, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

A Few Thoughts To Pass On

Hi Emily, I've been playing Guild Wars for something like 2 years now. I just want to thank you and the development team for taking the time to bring all the stories together and create such fantastic lore. I played Prophecies endlessly for hours upon hours (sometimes it was playing and replaying Pre-Searing just to see if I could get it all done faster...sometimes it was for the Survivor title), but what really kept me interested is that I kept finding more and more things to explore, even in a small (in comparison) world map, such as Pre-Searing Ascalon.

I've read and re-read the manuals, keeping myself updated on the lore of the game, who is coming from where and so on and so forth. So you can imagine my joy when I bought the second and third game and kept going. I've played only one character through the games (though I have had many other low level characters that have passed on), my ranger: Jack Valmont. I've seen it all, for the most part. What's really surprised me is finding new areas that I've never stepped foot in before the last few weeks in Kryta: Twin Serpent Lakes and Tears of the Fallen. Then I took it upon myself to continue my travels and head deep into Maguuma Jungle, specially The Falls. Now most of this area was kind of a dark, dreary jungle kind of feeling...so when I stumbled upon some of the most beautiful waterfalls, I was stunned. Literally stunned. I can happily say that I've seen over 90% of Tyria, and I'm excited to see what the last 10% has to offer.

Then I started Eye of the North. I ran from the Destroyers and ended up in some remote location, but I knew what I was after...I was after her. Gwen. I knew she would be up here, I've kept track of her over the three games, picking up her quest items, keeping her tapestry shred, holding her broken flute. I worried when I found her cape just in her small village. It looked like she tried to save her mother and was captured. Seeing her on those steps...just...

It was the first time in a long time that I had that "Oh Hell Yes!" kind of feeling from a game. Until that point, I had almost given up on Guild Wars...but she brought it all back, and I've fallen deep. I've drank the kool-aid, I've built the metaphorical shrine. And I wanted to thank you guys in the only way I could–by writing. So thank you for paying so much attention to the big and little details and giving a game world so much lore.

It truly is a different world today–where one person can experience many different ages in one world. Where culture and even species can change drastically. I used to agree with Prince Rurik, I would kill any Charr that I came across...but now, as I explore the outreached of Nolani Academy...he goes on, but I think to myself, "They aren't so bad."

Perhaps in 200 years, I will know for sure.

Again, thank you, thank you all very much. Jack 18:00, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words, Jack :) I can relate to many of your experiences, as they are strong reasons why I wanted to work for ArenaNet in the first place. It's nice to read positive things like this, especially since I get to experience first-hand how much everyone in the studio pours into the game every day (case in point, it's almost 9 and I've been here since around 9 this morning, and I'm only one of many that does this frequently). It's awesome to know that the passion is appreciated. :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:26, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I've just missed the wiki notes since they've been placed after I read the update page. :) -- Gem (gem / talk) 23:23, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm I have mixed feelings about that. Sometimes I'm in middle of tweaking my build so it's annoying when someone zone out or change districts, dragging me with them. But again, it'd be a good way for me to see if the party leader is the considerate type who thinks of others in the party or not. Barinthus 00:05, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
A short timer would be better imho. 3-5 secs. -- Gem (gem / talk) 02:08, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
This is odd, because just an hour ago, my party was changing towns and we had the 10 second delay like usual. Is this just for changing districts? Isk8 02:51, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Oh, yeah. According to the update notes atleast. -- Gem (gem / talk) 02:54, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
