Writer position

Just a quick question, Emily: The writing position for the website... does the applicant have to live in the US?-- Large 23:20, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

Heya Large! Yeah, we're looking for someone to come in-house. I've worked with remote contractors before in a writing capacity, and it ends up being really difficult to effectively communicate...especially when the big updates roll around. Yeah, unfortunately the work visa thing can be a huge problem for a lot of people. I guess there are a limited number of them granted per year throughout the entire country, so those are divvied up among companies in a way that I don't understand. I think it's simpler to get them for people that already work for the company (like in Martin's case), but applying for a new one seems to be tough. Getting a tourist visa is not the end of the world. I have a Vietnamese gf and she has to get a tourist visa everytime she comes over here. It stinks, especially the first time through, and there's a lot of paperwork, but basically if you can provide a good reason for why they can be sure you will go back when the visa is over (e.g., I have a job that I like and they expect me to return, or I am still in school and have to return to class in order to graduate, etc.) then you should not have a problem, unless you are from a country with international terrorists (like Saudi Arabia or Serbia), then all bets are off. But from what I understand, it is a lot easier to get a work visa if you are already in the US and a company hires you, so it may be possible to get a 1 or 3 month tourist visa, come over for the interview, get hired, and then apply for your work visa and stand a pretty good chance of getting it before too long. Yeah, that's tough. I don't know exactly what it is like in Colombia, but I had some friends in Vietnam that worked for the US Consulate on visa applications, and they told me that because the US has no way of tracking foreign nationals once they are inside the US, the policy position they have to take is to assume that everyone who gets a visa of any kind, whether tourist or otherwise, is going to stay forever. In other words, the US does not have the ability or desire to track down every tourist visa and make sure they will leave when the visa runs out, so they have to assume they won't. It's not like China or Vietnam or some place like that where a foreign national needs to register their passport with the local police in every place they spend the night, whether that be their own apartment, a hotel, or even just to crash at a friend's house for the night. In that way, if your visa runs out, the local police know and won't let you go anywhere until you either renew or leave the country, and leaving the country with an expired visa imparts a fine. Freedom has its cost, but it's often not Americans that pay for it. (Satanael 18:11, 9 June 2009 (UTC))

I would also like to add that even being in the US doesn't give you much advantage in obtaining a work visa over someone who is outside, if both already have a position lined up. I was considering getting one, and did a lot of research. In 2009, the number of alotted work visas for 2009 was exhausted in the third week of January... And there is about a 2 year waitlist currently. So I don't know how your dear employee was so successful, my guess is that he did not get a work visa, but an "O" visa instead (foreign national of extraordinary ability). All things considered, I don't think he would have had any problems getting one. There might also be a loophole for international companies who transfer their employees from one country to another. Dragon Festival

Hey hey Emily, I'm sorry if this is an intrusive question and if it is please ignore it. Just wondering however. why the website hasn't been updated to reflect the upcoming dragon festival? Normally it happens about a week before the event and currently it's just over six hours til the start of the event and yet still no update on the website. Just wondering if this is a change in anet's focus away from documenting the ingame events to focus on other projects or if it's just that you are all swamped with work and haven't been able to get to it yet? The new suggestion namespace

As per the end of this discussion (I know I'm a bit of a jerk, you don't need to mention it ;), would you care to comment on how it might be useful for the suggestion namespace to be organised? I'm asking you because I saw you active recently and you were involved in the discussion on Mike's page and a similar comment there drew no response. We could beat our head against a wall for weeks trying to figure out what we think the best way of categorising things is and implementing and enforcing the system, but it could all end up being useless if we don't get some input from Anet about how you guys would like it organised. Changes on Front Page

That person would be Why and the wiki community. Anet staff have very little input (beyond that of every user) on the actual organization of the wiki itself, so any changes you ever see to that format will normally be attributable to your fellow users. -- Salome 13:03, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Most of the conversation about what to do with the page happens on Talk:Main Page/editcopy, and you can see a possible 'beta' of new changes on Main Page/editcopy if people are working on it. I think that either solution works, since the information is both present here and there. The advantage of Twitter is the RSS capabilities, so it's easy to pipe right into a feed reader. It's a good interim solution for people that may not be able to hit the wiki from work or other places. I personally like Twitter and use it quite a bit. Personally, I tie all of my networking together, so my status updates push across all of my networking sites. I'd challenge that Twitter is definitely a social networking site, as I've used it on many occasions to quickly see what friends, co-workers, and other industry folks are up to. Kinda helps you keep on top of things when you don't have time to constantly stay in touch with people. It's probably not for everyone, but I know plenty of people that use it pretty efficiently. Small correction: the only people that must have legit software are banks that perform international financial transactions and thus must have all latest updates and security and be compatible with their international partners. Hospitals, Post Offices and Police are laughable in that regard, all their records are kept on paper, STILL. Pretty much anything can be bought and bribed, but corruption here is another issue, there's plenty of info online about that if you're curious. Also, I browsed that website, and found quite a few images that I know for a fact are copyrighted (such as artwork of Nene Thomas). (Reset indent) I worked IP infringement in Vietnam for a couple years, it can be enforced, though the veracity and effectiveness of tht enforcement depends entirely on the country. Vietnam was terrible, of course, but they did do some stuff that helped. I wouldn't be surprised if a well-worded cease and desist letter could do the trick. Anyway, that site is a real winner, apart from the GW art, I saw Halo, Star Wars, Gears of War, and World of Warcraft art as well. Somehow I doubt they got permission for it all... If so, I'm not sure that would be an applicable link, since the one is a location and the other is a skill. Ack, this is a tough one!!! I've adored zombies since I was two or three years old, since Night of the Living Dead was one of the earliest movies I remember watching. I could probably write a huge dissertation on why I like zombies, but essentially I think it boils down to a fascination with the idea of how society would handle absolute chaos (in the case of an outbreak) and the concept of a creature that appears to be human but is actually the antithesis of humanity. I'm a big weirdo that's kind of fascinated with sociology. Also, zombies are rad and they eat brains. So that's part of it, too :) -- Emily Diehl (talk) 21:06, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Jokes, memes, what ever, aside, I find it kind of interesting that someone working in a field that almost requires god-like order and structure to have such a fascination with disorder and chaos. We, as humans, tend to gravitate towards things that are familiar, things that are comfortable. For instance, if I had put my mind to it, I could have pursued art or writing, but it felt too loose and unstructured. As a result, I gravitated towards programming, a field that was structured and ordered, while still allowing me to be creative, but in a logical fashion. There is also the matter of human fear and often fascination with the unknown. So I guess the question boils down to: From where does this fascination with chaos and disorder originate? Perhaps it's the manifestation of a fear of disorder, bred from the comfort of a life governed strongly by structure and order? Perhaps I'm just wildly and baselessly theory-crafting? *shrugs* Who knows. Welcome to the thoughts and interesting quandaries that keep me up at night. — Jon Lupen 01:45, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
