trivia or coincidence?

Heya, got another question, Emily (and it probably won't be the last). Is the Chromatic Scale a reference to the musical scale with the same name, or is it simply a (very odd) coincidence?--MP47 (Talk) (Contr.) 22:10, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Hiya MP! I checked with John about this, and his response was hilarious. He said that it sadly wasn't a reference, stressing that he wasn't musically oriented enough to make it. After I mentioned it to him, he was super excited about how cool the coincidence was, and told me to tell you that you've "opened his eyes to the world of the chromatic scale". I guess he looked it up and read the Wikipedia article out of curiosity :) So, long story short: nope, not a reference despite the cool coincidence. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:14, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Rofl! Cool, thanks for the answer, Emily.--MP47 (Talk) (Contr.) 00:20, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Reference question

I got a quick trivia question for you in one of the quests. In Botanical Research, you are looking for the mehkuunah plant, which has similar affects to the Cannabis plant. Is the mehkuunah plant a reference to the Cannabis plant? — Eloc 04:27, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't think that this is an intentional reference. I'll check for you, though. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 04:49, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
reading it backwards... hanuukhem. could be a reference to duke nukem :D jk, but i also thought those effects were quite similar to drugs altogether. - Y0_ich_halt Have a look at my page 21:40, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Heya guys...I checked on this and nope, it's not an intentional reference. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:02, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Guild Wars 1 is beginning to feel a lot like Lost seasons 1-3. We need answers, not more questions!!! Hee hee. I hope Guild Wars 2 gives us a ton of "ohhhhh moments." --Ravious 15:40, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Komalie

As we know the door of Komalie, in abaddon's mouth, and it's guardians on the other side, i wondered what was the name Komalie from ? Khilbron knows it, maybe Doric did too ? is Komalie the name of someone ? Maybe the mursaat who builded it ?

as the guardians of Komalie are foes who seems to belong to dhuum army, as being driders and dream riders, i supposed that the name of "Komalie" refers to somekind of "space", not only a frontier between the volcano and the foundry, but a larger area, that link thoses two, at least. in regard of dhuum army, i guess "Komalie" links the tyria from the volcano, the realm of torment from the foundry, and an unknow realm, where dhuum has his own army...

so the door of komalie would lead to Komalie ? or it is the name of something else? (my guess being somekind of central transfer chamber, or dhuum realm) the guardians of Komalie would be the keeper of a door in the foundry ? or the keeper of something else than a door ?

so to resume, i really wonder and liked to know what is Komalie :) ? good day to you, and thanks if you can give me a clue ^^ lussh 19:25, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Sure, Luush! I'll pass this question around and see if there is anything I can find out about it for you. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:01, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
Hiya again, Luush! I spoke with the writers and designers, and I was told that that bit of lore is "yet to be revealed". Unfortunately, I can't provide any more than that right now. Sorry to be vague on this one :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:39, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Okay ^^ If that's so, i'm confident it's nice stuff. :) I'm pretty impatient to learn what is really komalie. ^^ Thanks Emily. lussh 09:15, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
My elementalist senses are tingling on this one! Reading in between Emily's line mean that komalie will play a big part in GW2! Yay? Renin 10:25, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Why not ? behind the door of komalie lies the flame, wich has the power to destroy the good and the evil. Titans obeys the bearer of the scepter of orr, the lich (tryed to) used it to conquer, maybe someone else could use it and them to defend tyria against greater threats. :) the scepter of orr control the spirits world, the energy, and so, the titans.

the staff of mist controls reality, the life, what kind of great strength could come from usis both for good ? ^^ ( and maybe the staff of the mist can control another form of entitys from another door of komalie ? or it is needed to makes the titans complete :) we surely only can have theorys for now, but i'm glad there is so much to theorise about ^^ lussh 10:40, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps it's somehow linked to dragons - that we'd need those special staves (scepter of orr and staff of mist) along with something whatever Komalie is to counteract against dragons. After all, Glint took the scepter of Orr for a reason User Barinthus Magical Compass.png Barinthus 11:42, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Maybe we stick the staff on top of the dragon's head and use that as a joystick for the dragon to control it's movement! I know utterly useless comment but I just had to add it. Renin 03:59, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
The only problem with that Barinthus, is the fact that we destroy the Staff of the Mists in a quest in the Desolation. The Scepter of Orr, unfortunately, cannot be proven or unproven to actually hold some power over the Undead, Titans, or the like. As has been noted before, Abaddon could have simply told the Titans to follow the guy with the Scepter of Orr. Gmr Leon 21:27, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes, Gmr. Or perhaps it's more of those lines - we thought we destroyed the Staff. This sort of stuff happens a lot in comics and games - a character thought they killed off a villian only to meet that person again at a later time. After all I don't recall actually seeing it being destroyed - just that we threw it off an edge of a cliff. – User Barinthus Magical Compass.png Barinthus 23:30, 19 February 2008 (UTC
I think the staff of orr is from the undead dragon in orr which might be just like Primordus hibernating but still able to control a army which is an undead for this dragon. The undead dragon ordered the undead to get "his" staff back but he is to weak to be able to create a army strong enough to do that. And then if i am right with all above abbadon did said the titans had to follow the guy with the staff. --Fox007 User:Fox007 15:43, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

NPC Quotes

I just have to say kudos to whoever comes up with all the NPC quotes. I've been reading some of them, and must say some are plain hilarious. My favorite so far is definitely "Cynn breaks people. I put them back together again. I'm not sure if that's a good start to a relationship, but at least we have something to work with." Just plain brilliance. xD — Galil Talk page 05:23, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

"Did nightfall break when it hit the ground?" :D --Fox007 User:Fox007 09:24, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
I'll answer this one if Emily doesn't mind. Most of the Guild Wars Nightfall iconic NPC chatter was written by Ree Soesbee if I recall correctly, with some written by folks on the writing team as well. During Eye of the North pretty much everyone on the writing team contributed along with Ree, Jeff Grubb, and Eric Flannum. Glad you enjoyed it. :) Bobby Stein 21:09, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Reference?

Is Kazhad Dhuum a reference to Kazhad-Dum of Tolkien's Middle Earth, or are they just similar names?--MP47 (Talk) (Contr.) 22:09, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, I know there are a lot of LotR fanatics around here, so it's possible. I'll check :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Hiya again, Marco! I checked on this one, and was told that we're not absolutely positive of the intent behind the name, but the reference is likely since "kazhud" is the word for "dwarf" in Middle Earth. I don't think there's really any harm in going with a yes on this one. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:53, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Cool, thanks for checking--MP47 (Talk) (Contr.) 03:59, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Another reference question

A line in the Moddok Crevice mission reminded me of an exchange during the Fellowship of the Ring between Frodo, Gandalf, and Merry when they come to a set of passages in Moria which Gandalf doesn't recognize. In the mission:

Player: Which way? This is a maze of twisty passages.
Dunkoro: This way. I feel a fresh breeze.

The movie is similar, with Gandalf not knowing which way to go initially and then eventually saying, with about as much certainty as Dunkoro seems to have, Its that way. ... [T]he air doesn't smell so foul down here. I know, a bit of a stretch, but...

We also have a monster over a bridge at the end, enemy archers up above the bridge and passageway... basically, its all reminiscent of Moria. Or I'm a huge nerd. Anyway, I was curious of if you could confirm or deny whether this is all in my head and coincidental, or intentional. Thanks! - THARKUN User Tharkun sig.png 23:40, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, if you're such a nerd, then you'd know that "...a maze of twisty passages" comes from Crowther and Woods original ADVENT, the original Colossal Cave Adventure, circa 1976. :D --SnogratUser Snograt signature.png 07:09, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
Indeed; that would seem to make more sense than my attempted reference. But I'd never played said game and thus hadn't run across the reference; I am, however, something of a Lord of the Rings nerd. But yes, your phrase does appear quite often, it appears.
Hmm, I'm actually not sure about this one. I'll poke writers to see if I can find out :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Hiya Tharkun! It looks like Snograt nailed this one :) The writers confirmed that this bit is, in fact, an ADVENT reference. Good guess, though. We definitely do have a lot of Tolkien fans here, so there are lots of references from Middle Earth around. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:56, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, reading over wikipedia on Advent a bit, that makes more sense than my stretch.. but, as noted, I wasn't aware of Advent when I saw the chat and posted the question. Thanks for clearing that up. - THARKUN User Tharkun sig.png 20:02, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Hayda trivia question

Alright, one bit of trivia that popped up for a short while was this little tidbit: Hayda's name could have been based on the song Hayda Haki, by the singer Najwa Karam. Registered trademark? I don't see the relevance for that. It's only that Ebonhawke/Ebon Hawk is close enough to the Star Wars usage to perhaps be a reference and it's not a common enough term to simply be just a common term, as "fire ball" is. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ Talk 19:05, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

GW:EN box

Hey Emily I'm not sure if you can answer this but I just wanna bring this stuff up:

  • on the box of GW:EN(the cardboard part) if you open the flap why the heck is Ogden weilding an axe!?
  • on the back of GW:EN why are Pyre and Livia weilding fire wands and sheilds??

I'm just very curious about this and was wondering if you could answer--The Forsaken One 16:32, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Heya Forsaken! Good eye on catching that...I asked the question out loud, and it gave a few people the giggles :) When a game's created, there are a ton of moving parts that need to be completed at different times. In this case, screenshots and art assets were due for our packaging pretty far in advance so they could get off to print/production. Since design works and tweaks things up until launch, I'm guessing that the screenshots taken were meant to be more generic (possibly before the characters were fully fleshed out). --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:28, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

High Res Renders

Hi, I have a question. Actually, I have 2 questions. 1: How come the GW:EotN armor Renders don't dye anywhere close to the pictures? I mean, in other words, how come when you dye GW:EN armor, it looks completely different than the screen shots we have on here? (specifically with the Red color). and 2: How come some armors dye differently in PVP than their PVE counterparts? --ChristopherRodrigues 22:59, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm confused, woven armor isn't EOTN armor... --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 23:07, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
The picture is related to the second question, and not to the first :) - anja talk 23:12, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
The renders aren't dyed, they are taken in the base colour for the armor. :) - Bex User BeXoR sig.gif 03:29, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
IIRC, there is no such thing as Base color anymore. Gray is new base color. And even if referring to the old base colors, GW:EN Armor is all seen in Red. And regardless of the bass color, dying GW:EN armor red will not yield the same results depicted in the renders. --ChristopherRodrigues 05:05, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Base colour still exists. I think there is an explanation on the dye talk page, or possibly even in the article. If gray was base for everything, everything would dye the same. :P Dying eotn armor red is adding red to a red tint. The pictures aren't dyed. - Bex User BeXoR sig.gif 11:27, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
The pre-NF dye base colors still exist! For example, my Ranger has had the same mask worn since Prophecies days, and when the NF dye system came into play, the mask stayed the same. I recently crafted a new mask, and it came out with the "grey" color, which, for Ranger masks, is a greenish grey thing. If I recall, yellow dye made it look just like the masks did with their original "base" color. Same can be said about bags and belt pouches (why can we dye these again?). User eldin sig.jpg Eldin 21:36, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
Ok, let me clarify. Both of those armor sets were crafted AFTER nightfall. In fact, I crafted BOTH sets, and dyed them, on the same day I uploaded the screenshot, which was about a week ago. Emily, any thoughts?--ChristopherRodrigues 03:08, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi guys! I'd have to check on this topic, because it's got something to do with base colors of armors. I've had it briefly explained to me in the past, but I want to get clarification before I try to repeat back anything technical. I wish I remembered the details, but from what I do recall, it was a long explanation. I'm out sick today, but I'll do some follow up on the question tomorrow. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:04, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

(indent reset) If I'm correct in assuming the way armor is dyed it works kinda like this. The graphics artists drew the proph/factions/NF armor with a base color of purple, quite common when dealing with hue'd textures. So in the game when you "dye" your armor it simply changes the hue of a certain part of the armor, the dyable area. But when EOTN came out, they switched to a bright red color, most likely used because it gives a better effect and is a more pure color than purple, thus resulting in a better dye result. So because of this, when you "dye" eotn armor red, it hue's it to what ever color red is set to, and doesnt come out like what the armor looks like in the renders. This is partially due to the change in hueing methods used since the dye update a while ago. Although it yields more consistent results, it hasn't been adjusted to give the bright brilliant colors that dye used to, and cannot produce the bright red you see in the renders here. As for the pvp armor dying differently than the pve armor, well idk :P it could be a lot of things. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the armors are hue'd to grey when they are given to you from the armor crafter. --Lou-SaydusHow dare you put that damned dirty thing on me! 22:34, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

What Lou says sounds pretty accurate to what I was told, but I passed this topic along to the artists. I'll see if I can follow up with them to find out the answer for you. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:27, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Wisdom of the Druids

Ayreon has a song "And the Druids turn to Stone" and the lyrics always remind me of the aforementioned quest, Wisdom of the Druids. And since I have nothing better to do, Ima ask you this: Might this be a reference? --Vipermagi 18:25, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I don't know, Viper. I've never heard of Ayreon (going to have to check them out...their wiki article looks cool. I like metal.), but someone else may have. I passed that along with a refresher of the Charr/Wizard's Tower question just now, so I'll let ya know what I find out. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:21, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't really see a connection between the song and that quest, as the song is about Stonehenge, and the quest doesn't seem to reference that at all. But even so, Ayreon's rather amazing. Here's song of theirs I like, "Day Three: Pain" shawn (shawn - talk) 01:44, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Cool, thanks Shawn! I gave a listen, and they remind me a lot of a heavier/more eccentric Live (singer sounds a lot like Ed Kowalczyk). I'll add them to my Rhapsody list to check out more. Hurrah for metal. — Eloc 02:11, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Ayreon is a collaborative project masterminded by Arjen Lucassen, so each album features a different cast of various guest artists. — User Kyrasantae Fin sig.gif kyrasantae 02:28, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
As kysasantae mentioned above, each album features a different cast of various artists, often quite a few different people sing in one song. The 'main' singer to that song was James LaBrie of Dream Theater fame, while the chorus was done by Devin Townsend of Strapping Young Lad. Also notable is the lead singer of Opeth also sings on that album. Most Ayreon albums follow a 'concept' and tell a story throughout the songs. In the album from the above sample, this guy drives his car into a tree in the middle of the day for no apparent reason, and goes into a coma where his emotions take on human personas and guide him through his memories to find out what happened. Anyway, I could ramble on about music and Ayreon for a while, (it's rather hard to see, but my user icon is supposed to be two bass clefs mirrored), but I'll leave it at that for now. shawn (shawn - talk) 04:06, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Ayreon has, in fact, whole albums telling a story: Into the electric Castle -> Unversal Migrator -> 01011001 tells the story of -Forever- of the Stars, and how they planted life on Earth and everything surrounding that. I'm terrible at explaining stuff, so I'll leave it at that. Day Three:Pain is an awesome song. I've always found that one of their best songs. Back to topic; It's more about the ritual than the site that reminds me. --Vipermagi 15:04, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, it doesn't look like this was a reference. Thanks for pointing out Ayreon, though. I got a new band to toss into my Rhapsody rotation :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:04, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

another question why is it night in Vehtendi Valley? 75.165.117.200
For variety? -- Gordon Ecker 23:06, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
thats not realy a reason..... it would make more sence on a zone that their is only one way into. 75.165.117.200 06:42, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
if your not going to let me sign my comments because my ip changes. then don't delete my post.75.165.117.200
Hiya guys...just got some answers back about this stuff. Nope, Charr is not a Starcraft reference in any way. Also, the Wizard's Tower is not linked to the Asura. I'm going to have to double check about Vehtendi for you. I don't know if you're referencing me for the deleting posts comment, but I didn't delete anything. I'm innocent on that one! :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:00, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
i know it wasnt you by looking at the history log. anywhoo i think i worded the question about the wizards tower wrong, i wanted more background on it, the part about the asura was purely speculative. thanks for the answers, thus far!75.165.117.200 07:02, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
The comment's been re-added. I'm guessing it was reverted because the timestamps were wrong, and that the comment was removed by accident. And I think that "for variety" is a legitimate reason, Guild Wars has had day, night and dawn / dusk zones since Prophecies, I wasn't trying to insult you, just suggesting that it may be a purely aesthetic choice. -- Gordon Ecker 07:47, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
thanks, but in prophecies its not so drastic...i am trying to think of zones like that in the other two chapters and am comeing up with a blank.75.165.117.200 08:57, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
another question i though of is Markis suppose to be a refence to Indiana jones?75.172.43.176 00:17, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Heya anonymous! I just got word back that no, there is no particular reason why Vehtendi Valley is dark. Also, there is no correlation between Markis and Indiana Jones. Sorry! :( --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:52, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
thanks for the info! can you give any info at all about the wizards tower??75.165.111.218 22:40, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Sure thing! And no, unfortunately I can't provide any more details about the tower itself :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:53, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
