Nayl was born to a poor farming family in the Krytan village of Beetletun. His parents were both highly ritualistic, commuing with spirits and souls of the dead to determine the future of the family and friends. As he grew, Nayl grew disillusioned to the power of communing with the spirits and instead wished to harness this power and forward it to his own ends; thus at the age of 19 he laid his hands onto a copy of the Codex Necronomicon his parents owned and kept locked and hidden. He repeatedly used the book to increase his knowledge of the dead and of Necromantic power, eventually culminating in a raising of a minion from the corpse of a nearby wild animal. His parents discovered his use of the Codex and his unholy rites and attempted to get him to fall in line. Nayl rebelled against this forced indoctrination and lashed out, cursing his parents with power he didn't know he had. Unprepared, the massive energy engulfed him and tore the flesh from his skin and face, leaving him a wreck of his former self. Cast out from the village for his deeds, Nayl wandered aimlessly for years, developing his power in the loneliness of the wild while defending himself from the many predators. Eventually he fell in with a travelling band of cultists, who gathered strength and raided outlying villages and hamlets of Kryta. The mantle, learning of this, struck out and destroyed the group, not bothering to search for survivors. Alone again, Nayl wandered once more, before being discovered by Luthor and Kyri, travelling together once more against the mantle.
As a person, Nayl is very much a loner, who enjoys keeping himself to himself and rarely opens up to the others. His power, however, remains undimished, and so the others remains wary of him, for fear his solitary attitude may develop into outright agression. After Lys found the group a few years later, Nayl did find an outlet for his frustration, turning onot that with caused him his lasting disfigurement: Ritualists. His anger made Lys keep at arms length from Nayl, who became even more detached since the others discovered his behaivour and sided with young Lys.
